Matthew Goode Looks Back On WATCHMEN, & THAT Quote About The Fanboys

You may or may not remember Goode's reponse to a question about the fanboy backlash he received when he was cast as Ozymandias in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, but we're here to remind you! We also have Goode's feelings on the matter now..

Back when Matthew Goode was cast as Ozymandias in Zack Snyder's polarizing adaptation of Alan Moore's Watchmen, the fans weren't best pleased. Most of the other casting choices were met with approval, but Goode just seemed to rub them the wrong way. When the actor was asked about this back in the day, he responded: "If fanboys still hate the film after going and seeing it, they can all line up and suck my d***." A bit crude sure, but I must say I can understand his frustration with an entire group of people judging a performance they hadn't even seen yet. The very idea! Anyway, while interviewing Goode about his new movie Stoker, The Huffington Post asked him all about it.

"I wasn't convinced that I was the right choice to play him. And there were a couple of remarks I made in a very off-hand, facetious, jokey way, 'What if the fanboys don't like you?' 'Well, they can all line up and ...,' you know. I think we know that quote. I love literature and when I see things made into films, I worry about the casting, too. I think the fact that I was the only one out of all of the characters that Zack Snyder thought outside-the-box for: he cast it younger and different. Everyone else was pretty much bang-on -- and age bang-on as well. I was too skinny, I was 20 years ... whatever. So, that led me to kind of over-think it in some ways and give myself more of a backstory. I don't know. I think the film will age well."

I was a bit wary of Goode in the role myself, but he ended up giving a pretty good performance..some of Snyder's odd accent decisions aside! For the full interview click on the link below.

GO LINE UP HATERS!
FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin - 3/1/2013, 11:03 AM
Yup. Good performance.
95 - 3/1/2013, 11:04 AM
LOL. Good response.
95 - 3/1/2013, 11:05 AM
He was good.
fedup - 3/1/2013, 11:13 AM
Being honest, I didn't think about his age once he was actually on screen. He pulled off the role well enough and was spot on when it was time to change accents.
SuperDude001 - 3/1/2013, 11:22 AM
Meh he's always been a charmingly crude guy. Like a more rude Tom Hiddleston.
To be honest there probably was better actors in the role, but he did a decent job.
KeefNCookies - 3/1/2013, 11:23 AM
Enjoyed this movie immensely [Ultimate Cut ftw]!
Though I completely understand the hate of not having the giant monster at the end.
AlexTheKaiser - 3/1/2013, 11:25 AM
If every actor and director answered like that, the world would be a much better place.
HelaGood - 3/1/2013, 11:26 AM
hes an ass. but at least he has balls.
DukeAcureds - 3/1/2013, 11:26 AM
He was alright, I guess. Very salty. Left me with a bit of a cheese taste.
AlexDeLarge87 - 3/1/2013, 11:27 AM
I will gladly suck it cause the film was awesome. :)
DukeAcureds - 3/1/2013, 11:28 AM
When Lars Von Trier got all that shit about AntiChrist, his response was simply "I am the greatest filmmaker the world has ever seen".
Spock - 3/1/2013, 11:29 AM
It was pretty much faithful to the book, but the bomb I am still @ odds with!
Tainted87 - 3/1/2013, 11:29 AM
Totally forgot about Stoker. When's it coming out?
Bandrews1 - 3/1/2013, 11:30 AM
I personally thought he did a pretty good job as Ozymandias.
SkateandDestroy88 - 3/1/2013, 11:30 AM
Is the point of this article haters gonna hate don't judge a film or performance on something before it comes out.
. Unless its made by fox then you automatically should lower your expectations.

Wouldn't that be rad if Snyder directed a Superman Movie and Nolan and company were invonlved.

Ah yeah. Good performance. I dream about being on stage and telling everyone in the audience that I've had sex and received oral sex from all there mothers and girlfriends. What's the pt of being famous of you don't "Axl Rose" it up sometimes.
FilmDrake - 3/1/2013, 11:30 AM
That movie had an AMAZING opening credit sequence, and was terrible after that.
SageMode - 3/1/2013, 11:31 AM
C'mon, atleast he said what I'm sure 95% of the actors who get met with the fanboy blacklash wants to say in public. Much props to him. Lol.
StormLoganSummers - 3/1/2013, 11:31 AM
"If fanboys still hate the film after going and seeing it, they can all line up and suck my d***."

*looks for film online*
DukeAcureds - 3/1/2013, 11:35 AM
The film was very, very long. His dick? Not so much.
Spideyguy94 - 3/1/2013, 11:35 AM
I personally didn't like him in watchmen. Not that he was bad or anything but he played it a bit too obvious that he was the bad guy before the big reveal. If you watch it again and see his mannerisms, dialect and facial expressions its quite obvious that he is behind it all. Still love the movie though.
Shamo - 3/1/2013, 11:42 AM
movie sucked but he was impressive as always.
DangerRoom - 3/1/2013, 11:44 AM
I never realized he was 20 when he filmed this. He definitely looks like he's well into his 30's.
Gusto - 3/1/2013, 11:48 AM

I know I'm gonna catch
hell for this...but, I
liked Watchmen.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 3/1/2013, 11:48 AM
lmbo.
teabag - 3/1/2013, 11:49 AM
I like the movie..but i'd still like to suck his dick :P
TDKRnry88 - 3/1/2013, 11:51 AM
Well, fanboys can be dumbass complainers who judge something without seeing it in its entirety, so I can't hate on him for saying this. And he was good in the movie.
ckal - 3/1/2013, 11:56 AM
Watchmen was a good movie.
ckal - 3/1/2013, 11:56 AM
You could not translate the GN to movie any better than what was done.
RorMachine - 3/1/2013, 11:58 AM
Gusto, whaaaaa? Never be afraid to say that, I think it's one of the best CBMs ever!
FOOM - 3/1/2013, 11:59 AM
I agree with grif. It is the only opinion which is infallible.
CavEl - 3/1/2013, 12:00 PM
I LOVE thus guy now.

I even liked the ending change.
Could have done with less blue penis (no offense, Tea) though...
MrMartinMarvel - 3/1/2013, 12:09 PM
I haven't seen the whole movie. But from what I saw it seems pretty good.
rogmel - 3/1/2013, 12:09 PM
I enjoyed the movie with it's faults and all (ie, overuse of damn super slo-mo....hope MoS doesn't suffer that crap also).

But I'm one of the few who were glad to see the alien squids NOT part of the ending. That would have been stupid (in fact, it was stupid in the comic as well).
OdinsBeard - 3/1/2013, 12:09 PM
the longer time goes on the more people i run into who loved this movie who i would never think would like anything of the sort.

it will age well, he's right. like most of snyder's movies i think.
FOOM - 3/1/2013, 12:11 PM
@yossarian

I like Abba too. And the Bee Gees. And Watchmen's more sensible Lovecraftless ending.
teabag - 3/1/2013, 12:15 PM
Gusto@ Hey I live with it..atleast they got the size right :)
Gusto - 3/1/2013, 12:16 PM

What's your stance on Shailene Woodley?
Ohhh...too soon?
Gusto - 3/1/2013, 12:16 PM
Tea...lol...perv!

"If still hate the film after going and seeing it, they can all line up and suck my d***."

"Helloooooooooooooo Sailor"

:P
Vadakin - 3/1/2013, 12:19 PM
The problem with the ending is that it made more sense than the ending of the comic. In a world where Dr. Manhattan is the only true superhero, with pretty much unlimited power, it makes sense for him to the be the threat because it's a threat the world can comprehend.

And that's a negative? For the movie, no but for an adaptation of the comic yes. The whole point of Squiddy was that it didn't make sense. It was beyond comprehension and was a threat so far out there that everyone, Russians, Americans, all of them were scared shitless by what they didn't understand.

Dr. Manhattan as the enemy works in a straightforward way but the whole point of that ending in the book is that it isn't straight forward. Veidt creates an unfathomable threat for the world to unite against.
Dedpool - 3/1/2013, 12:20 PM
Good for you Matthew!!! I loved the flick! Love the comic! And I think it was very well made and written. I actually own it twice. Directors Cut and the the Complete Experience with the Black Freighter animated film interwoven.
teabag - 3/1/2013, 12:24 PM
Ciph@ lol Its just not the same without the plump white male ass jiggling on screen like jelly in zero gravity :P

The 70's was a great decade for Gusto and Nomis

Gusto reached the big one

and Nomis started a band

:P
thaonly1guly - 3/1/2013, 12:24 PM
Matthew Goode...the next Batman!?!?

I wouldn't mind him being Batman in the JLA movie and Batman reboot. Great actor.
jerryblake - 3/1/2013, 12:26 PM
Good movie. But not the ultimate cut. Tales of Black Freighter works well as standalone film. It just don't combine well with
directors cut.

Goode was good. I heard one time this crazy rumor about Tom Cruise playing Ozymandias. Wonder how it could end ...
ACira - 3/1/2013, 12:28 PM
I loved Watchmen, and everyone in the cast held up well with very strong performances.

Thank God that no one on this site is in charge of casting these movies. Because, let's face it, they'd all star C and D list TV actors, wrestlers, Victoria's Secret models and Michael Fassbender*.

*Michael Fassbender's pretty great, actually, but very overused by people on this site.
Leftcoastpunk - 3/1/2013, 12:29 PM
@SkateandDestroy88- you just used "Axl Rose" as a verb...he's my boy but that is awesome! d;-)

@yoss- your not alone bud, for some unexplained reason they are one of my guilty pleasures d;-). Nothing makes the bar patrons shake their heads more than when i stagger up to the jukebox and play ten bucks worth of roxette and the ABBA!

Oh ya, article topic... Watchmen is my go to CBM. Dudes comments were ballsy, but just proves he has bigger balls than the ones who want to say that exact same thing but don't.
teabag - 3/1/2013, 12:29 PM
I was big in the navy :P
