Is J. August Richards Playing Rage In AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D?

Many assumed the former Angel alum must be playing Luke Cage when his character was seen performing superhuman feats in the recent promos, but a (possible) clue in the brief Marvel bumper at the start of the new trailer may reveal his true identity..

Luke Cage? former UGO editor Chris Radtke doesn't think so.

Of course this is far from proof, but if taken as a clue to the character's identity then it does lean towards Richards playing Elvin Daryl Haliday, a.k.a. Rage -- a Marvel hero with powers not unlike the Hulk (he gets stronger the angrier he gets) who was at one point a member of both the New Warriors and The Avengers. What do you guys think? Sound off below.

I'd say yes I don't know maybe he's definitely probably not going to be
in some way he could . Lets just watch the show.
ruadh - 5/14/2013, 8:53 AM
Luke Cage is probably more high profile, and likely to appear in a movie, even if not a solo one. So, makes sense.
BruceLeroy - 5/14/2013, 8:55 AM
He has a better shot at being Rage than Luke Cage.
Reasonnnn - 5/14/2013, 8:55 AM
No wonder Coulson looks pissed in the trailer. HE WANTS THE ORIGINAL NOT THE BOOTLEG.

Iron Man does NOT approve.
MarkJulian - 5/14/2013, 8:56 AM
Bumper never lies, he's Rage.
Gmoney84 - 5/14/2013, 8:59 AM
If I were a betting man I say yes to this. It makes more sense for what the TV world will be able to do and shines the light on some even lesser known characters. Richards doesn't really look the part of a Luke Cage any way.
DVonShakari - 5/14/2013, 8:59 AM
this is the most exciting news I've heard about in months.....RAGE!!!!
ForMeToPoopOn - 5/14/2013, 8:59 AM
That works. This could become a great outlet for lesser-known characters.
NoAssemblyReqd - 5/14/2013, 9:01 AM
According to Wikipedia:

"Elvin's exposure to unknown biochemical radioactive wastes gave him superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, and resistance to physical injury. He becomes exponentially stronger with applied force, such as hitting. He is able to use his enhanced strength to leap great distances. In his first appearance, Rage was shown outrunning a speeding subway train, but this ability has not been used again."
RyGoR - 5/14/2013, 9:01 AM
I could dig that build up the new warriors!!!!!!
AlReg - 5/14/2013, 9:02 AM
I think Rage has always been in the Marvel Logo.
imnotahero - 5/14/2013, 9:03 AM
They use that same logo on EVERY Marvel Universe film. They all have the same generic looking characters. They only did speciality logos for X-men and the first Hulk movie.
MarkJulian - 5/14/2013, 9:04 AM
@imnotahero If you look closely, you'll see that they actually use different characters every time.
NoAssemblyReqd - 5/14/2013, 9:05 AM
Not all of the individual logo frames change, but many do. I think this was first apparent to me on X-MEN 3.
Ocelot - 5/14/2013, 9:05 AM
so he's a luke cage knockoff then
NoAssemblyReqd - 5/14/2013, 9:06 AM
@Ocelot

Luke Rage? J/k. Marvel, don't get any ideas.
marvel72 - 5/14/2013, 9:06 AM
i can live with him being rage, luke cage needs big screen treatment.
SKOne - 5/14/2013, 9:07 AM
I would call this a definite with J. August being in the Whedonverse inner circle and the fact that the role sounds fairly close to the Gunn character he played on Angel.
imnotahero - 5/14/2013, 9:08 AM
@MarkJulian- No, they don't. They used to do that with the FOX movies but the MCU has been using one logo the whole time.
FlappyJax - 5/14/2013, 9:09 AM
It's crazy considering he was just on Arrow a few weeks ago.. I'm expecting David Boreanez and Eliza Dushku to show up on SHIELD too.
DCjohnny - 5/14/2013, 9:09 AM
yes its the same logo that has been used in all marvel movies ... just checked it now.
Omarvls - 5/14/2013, 9:12 AM
Could this show be Marvel's X-Files/Fringe?
SKOne - 5/14/2013, 9:15 AM
I've got a strong suspicion that with Disney now owning ILM and the continually decreasing cost of CGI, that the show will probably be able to look like an upgraded version of Fringe. Now to find out who or what the fire creature that's next to Coulson is.
ParisSun - 5/14/2013, 9:17 AM
Too bad, Luke Cage would have been better. I guess he might be too big of a character to use on tv. Marvel probably wants to keep the option of a Luke Cage movie open.

Well, Rage would be great if the rest of the New Warriors follow in his footsteps.
MrMartinMarvel - 5/14/2013, 9:17 AM
Sometimes I don't understand grif.
capcyclopsftw - 5/14/2013, 9:18 AM
They announced this will be airing in the fall on Tuesdays!
ruadh - 5/14/2013, 9:21 AM
@imnotahero
"@MarkJulian- No, they don't. They used to do that with the FOX movies but the MCU has been using one logo the whole time."

Ha, that's awesome! I just saw one for one of the Spiderman movies on youtube, and caught the Rage frame shown in this article there too.
MBZ1993 - 5/14/2013, 9:22 AM
i feel like this show is gonna last at least until avengers 2.

i wonder if anyone from the avengers will make a cameo
exodus147 - 5/14/2013, 9:25 AM
Introducing the New Warriors here could be great build up to Civil War. Have the disaster in Stanford happen in the season finale, leading up to avengers 2 or 3 or 4.
exodus147 - 5/14/2013, 9:25 AM
Stamford
GOTG - 5/14/2013, 9:28 AM
hey young blood doesnt it feel like time is running out imk gonna change you like a remix then i'll raise you like a phoinex
Herc509 - 5/14/2013, 9:31 AM
It's a stretch,Rage is huge, this dude ain't big enough to be Rage or Luke Cage for that matter. Maybe he's playing an unknown black dude to named at a later time.
TelaVizion - 5/14/2013, 9:35 AM
yup, that comic scene is in the Spidey 1 "bumper"... Didn't reveal anything
HAILHYDRA - 5/14/2013, 9:36 AM
Whew. Thank gawd he isn't Luke Cage. Dodge a bullet there.
NovaCorpsFan - 5/14/2013, 9:42 AM
I've been scouring the Marvel encyclopaedia and I'm getting nothing on who he might be. Rage seems rational though.
Inhuman - 5/14/2013, 9:50 AM
I highly doubt Richards is Luke Cage. He doesnt look like him at all and Marvel wants us to speculate about it. Showing a black guy jumping out a window saving a woman, of course we're all gonna think Luke Cage! lol. I dont know anything about Rage but Im happy they're introducing characters that many people dont know of. BTW: The Rock should be Luke Cage!
Inhuman - 5/14/2013, 9:50 AM
At some point, the show has to introduce Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, and Mockingbird. All 3 were SHIELD agents
MrYurMomm - 5/14/2013, 9:54 AM
I still think its the Victor Alvarez version of Powerman.
kevberg - 5/14/2013, 9:58 AM
Can someone tell where the bumper has proven true? just curious.
HongKongPooey - 5/14/2013, 9:59 AM
I tried to watch the Avengers trailer and spot the bumper. I cant see it, too fast
