Guillermo Del Toro Says His JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Movie Is "Very Active"

Many fans seem to think that del Toro's planned Dark Universe movie is something that will never actually happen, but while speaking to Collider the director confirms that after one more revision from the still unannounced writer, they'll be good to go..

Guillermo del Toro is known for juggling many projects at once, and in the past has been linked with several movies and tv shows etc that have since been scrapped -- so it's hard to blame fans that might be skeptical that his adaptation of DC's Justice League Dark (currently known as "Dark Universe") will ever get off the ground. But, the Pacific Rim director certainly sounds adamant that it'll happen in an interview with Collider. Del Toro reveals that Dark Universe is the English language project he's enjoyed working on most, and that when this "big" writer comes on board for one final revision, they'll be all set.

“Justice League Dark is very active. I’m doing one more revision while we wait for the writer. It’s somebody big, [and] we’re patiently waiting for that writer. I think it’s worth it, I think it’s a guy we all admire. I’m doing my revisions on my sort of Bible, on my story for the film. I can tell you it’s the writing project I’ve enjoyed the most in English. Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth are in Spanish, but of all my writing and screenplays, this was so much fun because it was character. It was a pretty easy plot, but the character interaction, Swamp Thing with Deadman and Demon, it’s so joyful for me to write that. Constantine is such a great character, so dry. I think it could be a great movie. I don’t want to do many changes until the proper writer comes onboard.”

While doing press for Pacific Rim del Toro was also asked if he had anyone in mind to play John Constantine. Of course he gave no reply, but did confirm that this incarnation of the character would most definitely be "bond, British, and smoking cigarettes!". knocturnalzen10 - 7/11/2013, 10:20 AM
when u have constantine on a team they shouldn't consider to be heros
JerBear - 7/11/2013, 10:21 AM
This will be DC's GotG. Everybody gives Marvel crap about them being unknown, but that's what makes it fun. A film about a team of misfits. Awesome. Zooey Deschanel for Zatanna.
JerBear - 7/11/2013, 10:25 AM
Do we know the full team? It seems to me that the only confirmed characters are Constantine, Zatanna, Etrigan, Swamp Thing and Deadman
Godzillafart - 7/11/2013, 10:27 AM
Nice! More than Superman, this could make the DCU very, very interesting!
BatsFan - 7/11/2013, 10:28 AM
Let's go WB, produce the shit out of this movie !!
Godzillafart - 7/11/2013, 10:28 AM
@Levi: Doug Jones would rock as Deadman.
Jollem - 7/11/2013, 10:30 AM

ALegendaryPanda - 7/11/2013, 10:32 AM
I don't really know what the [frick] this is, but I'm definitely [frick]ing interested!
BatsFan - 7/11/2013, 10:33 AM
@Levi or Perlman could be Etrigan.
BANEofExistence - 7/11/2013, 10:38 AM
Im holding out for comic-con! Man of steel sequel and Dark Universe for DC comi con announcments (Hell maybe even a Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman or Batman reboot?!?!?!)

Sadly No DC for 2014, Days of Future Past is my most anticipated! Come on Singer! You rocked it with X-Men and X2!
astromerc - 7/11/2013, 10:44 AM
WB you need to make this movie!!! Wait for it!
DanteSparda - 7/11/2013, 10:46 AM
@JerBear

Completely agree with you.

@HydraBob: "Guys It's WB= Dumbasses in suits."

Well... they are, but it takes a good director with enough balls to come on board so WB let him make a great film, like Christopher Nolan with Batman and now Guillermo Del Toro.
fettastic - 7/11/2013, 10:47 AM
Keep in mind he reassured us all several times that his Hulk TV show was coming too. I'm not saying he's lying, he's just a very optimistic guy who also does not want to compromise his vision.
BatsFan - 7/11/2013, 10:47 AM
Who do you guys think is that secret big writer ?
chrismyers - 7/11/2013, 10:48 AM
I hope to god he's using Alan Moores Swampthing run for inspiration....i have never been so excited for something made by DC....they for once have found the perfect person to make the perfect movie! Like Joss and avengers!!
Godzillafart - 7/11/2013, 10:49 AM
Purge18 - 7/11/2013, 10:50 AM
Deadman- Doug Jones
Zatanna- Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Floronic Man- Ralph Fiennes
DemonBowler - 7/11/2013, 10:51 AM
Marc Warren for Constantine
chrismyers - 7/11/2013, 10:52 AM
@PURGE18
Floronic man - ralph fiennes is a great idea but i also thought Kevin Bacon if youve seen the woodsman
I would love them to use sting for constantine ha
fettastic - 7/11/2013, 10:54 AM
As for this project in particular, WB obviously has some faith in it since it has come this far. If Pacific Rims tanks as it likely will, that might sink Dark Universe as well because it's already a risky proposition.

At some point you have to ask yourself who this movie is for. Big Budget R rated superhero films haven't proven to be financially worth the investment. Will it be like Ghost Rider with heavily watered down themes to get that PG-13? That didn't work out too well either.

Plus, there are a LOT of complex characters to introduce so how do you do that and come up with a viable threat that isn't underwritten?

Personally, if you are doing a reboot to Constantine so you can't rely on the previous film for an origin, then you AT LEAST need an origin film for Swampy first or the film is going to be one long exposition.
Godzillafart - 7/11/2013, 10:55 AM
I don't want to give anyone nightmares...but what if the "big writer" is damon lindelof?

eldorado - 7/11/2013, 10:55 AM
Del Toro es su patrón, cabrones
jp688 - 7/11/2013, 10:57 AM
If we could get The Creeper in to this mix, it would be perfect.
PapaMidnite - 7/11/2013, 10:58 AM
@Demonbowler, nice shot!
PapaMidnite - 7/11/2013, 10:59 AM
big writer - Neil Gaiman? Clive Barker?
Jollem - 7/11/2013, 11:01 AM
@chrisymyers - moore's run is the awesome

stevenson or elba both sound good for swamp thing
BatsFan - 7/11/2013, 11:01 AM
Neil Gaiman yeah that would be cool.
Jollem - 7/11/2013, 11:03 AM
gaiman for screenplay at least
Jollem - 7/11/2013, 11:05 AM
elba or stevenson's voice would be good
MightyZeus - 7/11/2013, 11:05 AM
I'm really hyped for this project. I have all the comics including the first issue which has remained untouched.

This film will be amazing. I wonder if they'll tie this film to 'I Vampire' or 'Batman'.
MightyZeus - 7/11/2013, 11:06 AM
Ron Pearlman for Swamp Thing
DemonBowler - 7/11/2013, 11:06 AM
"bond, British, and smoking cigarettes!". So it has to be a James Bond actor, my guess is Daniel Craig or Sean Connery. :)
chrismyers - 7/11/2013, 11:06 AM
@Jollem - If the base it on the style the characters are written it will help push DC on to the map for grounding fantastical characters
Jollem - 7/11/2013, 11:07 AM
hey, if they do heaven sent before justice league, it may cut down on the amount of; "they're just copying avengers. hurr, hurr". maybe not, tho
