James Gunn Says If Rocket Raccoon Doesn't Work, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Won't Work

Once again stating that the little Raccoon is the "heart" of his upcoming space-set adventure, Gunn is adamant that they need to get Rocket right for the entire movie to work. Check out the video interview from Hitfix after the jump..

"Rocket [Raccoon] is the heart of this movie. If Rocket doesn't work the movie's not gonna work. If Rocket does work the movie's gonna work. And so for me, the whole time it's been about making something that some people could think of as a cartoon or a ridiculous character into a real creature. If a raccoon really was able to walk and talk and make machines and shoot a gun, how would that really happen? How could that occur? And so for me it's about grounding everything in reality."

The Guardians Of The Galaxy are made up of some pretty obscure Marvel characters, and there was a worry that with no big name team members, the movie may be a hard sell -- to non comic fans particularly. When those concerns were pot to Gunn he compares what he's doing on GOTG to the gamble Marvel took on the first Iron Man movie. "The truth is when Iron Man came out, basically nobody knew who Iron Man was," he states. "Iron Man...they sold 15,000 copies of 'Iron Man' a month. That's not enough to even make the first million dollars or whatever. So it really isn't any different...we are starting the wing of Marvel that is the Marvel Cosmic Cinematic Universe. This is Marvel Cosmic. And we're doing exactly what they did with the first Iron Man."

Yeah that sounds about right. Can't wait to see who they get to voice Rocket Racoon.

This guy get it all. My most anticipated film next year
Ramiel - 7/24/2013, 2:04 PM
To make Rocket work, you need someone awesome to voice him.
MrMartinMarvel - 7/24/2013, 2:08 PM
Can't wait for Rocket!

Dave is going to badass in this movie and he deserve it
He put this back on his tweeter
JediPhilosopher - 7/24/2013, 2:13 PM
Just like he said, like IronMan. ANd even though I'm not a huge fan of RDJ and his weird mannerisms, they work to make an awesome Tony Stark. IronMan might not have taken off the way it did without him. They need to find what's great about the racoon's personality and figure out what actor can do that with style.
Omarvls - 7/24/2013, 2:14 PM

@MARVELPSYCHO79

This movie will be Marvel's very own Star Wars

If I could only choose one between Star Wars Episode 7 or GotG to see

I choose the Raccoon

JoeMomma29 - 7/24/2013, 2:15 PM
So this is all on the shoulders of a CGI Racoon?!?!?
HelaGood - 7/24/2013, 2:15 PM
i confirm @TheHeat's comment!
ATrueHero1987 - 7/24/2013, 2:16 PM
I'm not worried. I believe they can sell this.
SaxoWolf - 7/24/2013, 2:17 PM
this movie should be interesting.

I just wish Marvel would move ahead with a movie for Daredevil, Blade and The Punisher.
GodzillaKart - 7/24/2013, 2:18 PM
Wow! Gunn is tweaked and passionate and honest. Watching his energy gave me much more hope for this show.
JoeMomma29 - 7/24/2013, 2:18 PM
@saxo I agree but Disney will water those down!!!!
xNightwingx - 7/24/2013, 2:20 PM
I think that's a little ridiculous to think nobody knew who Iron Man was when the first movie came out. Regardless of how many comics were being sold at the time.
UrbanKnight - 7/24/2013, 2:20 PM
Well duh. I'm sure they got him down.

rocket is gonna be so popular, awesome in the comics & i'm sure he'll be awesome on the big screen.
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/24/2013, 2:32 PM
Hopefully he works cause I want GOTG to work. Very excited
TelaVizion - 7/24/2013, 2:32 PM
I hate when they talk about Iron Man like that, cause ppl knew who he was (mostly from the 90s cartoon). He wasn't a nobody like they make him out to be. GOTG are more "nobodies" than Iron Man was when his movie came out.
Connerkentver1 - 7/24/2013, 2:32 PM
I dunno. Even Gunn is having doubts and they haven't even cast Rocket yet. I still can't believe we are having a GOTG flick before Flash or JLA. My choice is Jason Statham for Rocket.
oldnoname - 7/24/2013, 2:33 PM
Am I the only one worried about how they are going to pull off a talking raccoon in a way that doesn't seem ridiculous in a bad way? Maybe it's because I don't read Guardians of the Galaxy
SilentBob - 7/24/2013, 2:34 PM
Gotta say the more I hear from Gunn the more I think this could turn out great. I am really looking forward to this now.
NeoBaggins - 7/24/2013, 2:34 PM
The concept art is awesome, but it looks like they want Rocket to look too real in structure. He has a really humanoid stature from the neck down, and a really Racoonish head and face. I think if they loosen up and give him the more cartoonish features it would work better. He would still have the texture and what I'm guessing will be awesome CGI. But he should look a bit more exaggerated. Not like a little fury man.
Connerkentver1 - 7/24/2013, 2:35 PM
@TelaVizion, I agree Iron Man is and was WAY more well known than the Guardians. Ditto with Thor.
blvdnoise - 7/24/2013, 2:38 PM
I've never been quite sold on GOTG. I do hope it's kool though..
AmazingFantasy - 7/24/2013, 2:40 PM
He knows his shit
sexfoodcomics - 7/24/2013, 2:42 PM
@ batz. I saw the comic con stuff , it's no Pixar film, they were cursing all over the place, star lord is flipping the bird to people. And rocket was on groots back growling with two Uzis in his hands firing at everything that moved.

This is going to be the best marvel movie to date. It is definitely a James gunn film. To watch Super
NeoBaggins - 7/24/2013, 2:45 PM
@sexfoodcomics

Oh shit. You saw actual film footage?
supafunxsta - 7/24/2013, 2:45 PM
Michael Wincott would be awesome as Rocket.
jcfrommars9 - 7/24/2013, 2:45 PM
@sexfoodcomics

That's what I heard as well. Not to mention "Guardians of the Galaxy" was second only to "Ultron" in Google search trends. It's no guarantee but like you said, it's no Pixar film.
Ocelot - 7/24/2013, 2:50 PM
@TelaVizion

Agree with what you said, the comparrison isn't apt at all. Iron Man has his own cartoon show which aired for years even after it had originally ended, starred in others (90's Spiderman, Fantastic Four) and was in a bunch of videogames.

The character wasn't as popular as he is now but he was known in the term that you had heard of the name "Iron Man". He was far more known before his movie than Guardians are before theirs.
LoudNoises - 7/24/2013, 2:53 PM
"For me it's about grounding everything in reality."
Oh no he didn't!!! ;)

All jokes aside, I'm pretty psyched for this movie.
NeoBaggins - 7/24/2013, 2:55 PM
If the idea matches the outcome, this will be the one of the sickest movies ever. Not CBM, but sickest MOVIE in general. Plus CBM.
ADParker - 7/24/2013, 2:56 PM
@ oldnoname, no you are far from the only one I expect.
Rocket will be the hardest to render on screen as a believable character. Even a walking talking tree is easier, there is precedent there after all (Lord of the Rings for example.) They really have to get the CGI perfect (form and motion,) and marry it perfectly with the voice actor, so that people can go into enough of a state of suspension of disbelief that they forget that they are looking at an imposed raccoon image, and see him as as much a "present" and real character as anyone he shares screen time with.
Wallymelon - 7/24/2013, 2:58 PM
this is gonna be sooo goood
