Last night former Battlestar Galactica alum and star of this week's big geek release Riddick, Katee Sackhoff, joined our friends over at The Schmoes Know Movies Podcast. A variety of things were discussed (more on that later on) but most interesting was Katee's response when quizzed about the recent online chatter of her being interested in a Marvel movie role..specifically Ms./Captain Marvel. It all started with the actress merely saying she'd be up for taking the role in any possible future movie, but it seems things have progressed from there! When asked if there had been any official phone calls or discussions on the matter, Katee first asks which studio that would be with (Disney), before revealing that "there's been some stuff going on" and "a lot of checking of availability for the first quarter of next year". Now although the lads try to get a bit more out of her, Katee never mentions Ms. Marvel specifically, but with the recent news that the studio are considering her big-screen debut I'd say it's a safe bet. But if not Carol Danvers, any ideas who else it could be? Sound off in the usual place.

Maybe Captain Marvel. I think Ms. marvel is just such a lame and slightly demeaning name. I wouldn't mind seeing her as the Enchantress
ManCalledSting - 9/6/2013, 7:52 AM
I really hope marvel doesn't crap on a great character like Captain Marvel by replacing him with a rather lame character....oh wait. Well at least there's hope their smart enough to use the proper Mar-Vel in live action.
Lozzy - 9/6/2013, 7:52 AM
I'm starting to think we may very well see a Ms. Marvel film in Phase 3
Praetorian - 9/6/2013, 7:57 AM
Then again Katee Sackhoff could be VISION... Nah Joss would never let that happen. I dunno there's so many roles that have been hinted at the she could play.- Tigra, She Hulk, Ms.Marvel, Mockingbird, Wasp. Just too many to tell.
StarYeezus - 9/6/2013, 7:57 AM
I would be okay with this.
patriautism - 9/6/2013, 8:00 AM
Sorry I love you Starbuck but Yvonne Strahovski IS Ms. Marvel
MexicanChinman - 9/6/2013, 8:02 AM
@Praetorian, how the heck is Ms. Marvel a demeaning name? So is Mr. Fantastic, Superman, Spiderman, and Wonder Woman demeaning names then? Dumb@$$
PsyGuy - 9/6/2013, 8:02 AM
She'd be a great Captain Marvel!

tvor03 - 9/6/2013, 8:02 AM
If it's for first quarter of next year than it definitely isn't Ms. Marvel. That would fall in line with the filming of AoU, so probably a SHIELD agent, maybe even Mockingbird. Or it could possibly be for Ant-Man, so Wasp perhaps.

@LEVITIKUZ
But Vin is going to be a badass Groot while still doing a 2016 film I say an Inhuman (Black Bolt)
what do you think?
YearOne - 9/6/2013, 8:06 AM
Not very attractive.
third3ye - 9/6/2013, 8:10 AM
Q1 next year means it's a supporting role for a movie already announced, A2 perhaps?
Enphlieuwince - 9/6/2013, 8:11 AM
Welcome, welcome!! Always excited to get a new character in the MCU. I hope they do an electrifying Ms. Marvel film so DC can gather the testicular fortitude to do WW.
Enphlieuwince - 9/6/2013, 8:12 AM
@Levi, i hope your wrobg about Vun; it'd be such a waste for a voice over role...
Enphlieuwince - 9/6/2013, 8:12 AM
wrong*
Enphlieuwince - 9/6/2013, 8:13 AM
Vin*
StrangerX - 9/6/2013, 8:20 AM
Yawn
naterator - 9/6/2013, 8:22 AM
DCWB better get their game on in regards to Wonder Woman. I'm tired of Marvel doing everything first.
MexicanChinman - 9/6/2013, 8:22 AM
Fingers crossed on a Dr. Strange film.
Humperdink - 9/6/2013, 8:22 AM
She can do it.
Nice girl and very beautiful.
Omarvls - 9/6/2013, 8:24 AM
@LEVITIKUZ
"They won't use Vin twice in the universe."

Ah did he not just say
That He will play Groot because the fan base wanted it bad enough but Marvel is still keen on Phase 3 for what they talked about to begin with

My prediction is Black Bolt in an Inhuman movie in 2017
to go head to head with Justice League just a guess
SimonM7 - 9/6/2013, 8:27 AM
Ms/Captain Marvel is a really tricky proposition. I think the current Captain Marvel book is awesome, and more importantly it's ripe with material that would carve out its own little corner and have its own flavour in the stable of MCU properties.

I think Katee Sackhoff suits the current run really well, with a slightly "boyish" aura, and you'd totally buy her as a pilot heavily invested and interested in air-force history.

The problems arise the same way they do for a Miles Morales/Spidey film. It's really, really entangled in prior comic book history, to the point where you'd really need a condensed, brand new origin for a movie Captain Marvel. You probably would for a Ms Marvel movie, too, but long-time fans would probably be more okay with that.

But the current Captain Marvel really does feel like a very modern, very sincere approach to a female superhero. She's pissing people off with her hairdo being "too butch", which is a great sign that she's not just falling into the category of 90s Pamela Anderson with a swimsuit painted on, and with an already strong character in Carol Danvers having her origin/normal identity back, it would probably make for the most impactful female-led movie Marvel can do right now.

It sucks that the character is stepping on the toes of fans of the original Captain Marvel, but that's just highlighting the bigger problem of female heroes having to "inherit" a title from male ones. That's why I agree with @Praetorian that "Ms Marvel" is annoying as a name. The connotation is clear; "she's merely the "Ms Pacman" to the *real* Captain Marvel."
gambgel - 9/6/2013, 8:30 AM
if Marvel really wants to make a Miss Marvel movie one day, they should be really carefull with the actress choice.

She should be someone more or less known, and with the skills to lead a solo movie.

So not sure if this actress would be the best choice.
CarlXVIGarfield - 9/6/2013, 8:33 AM
She-Hulk
Tevii - 9/6/2013, 8:36 AM
Figures. Marvel is going to lead the way AGAIn with a female superhero. And all the while WB has the SINGLE most ICONIC female superhero and they do NOTHING with it.

Then when Marvel succeeds, the suits at WB will be reactionary as always and fast track a Wonder Woman film... so fast in fact that they screw it up.
CarlXVIGarfield - 9/6/2013, 8:37 AM
Marvel. Get Tricia Helfer for anything. ANY THING.
SimonM7 - 9/6/2013, 8:39 AM
@gambgel

This is sadly very true. And I say sadly, because exactly the kind of actor you're proposing - one that would put asses in seats - would need to be such a known quantity that it's nearly impossible to get one that suits Carol Danvers.

The only one I can really think of with that kind of pull, who also suits the role to a degree, is Charlize Theron.
l0rdleg0las - 9/6/2013, 8:40 AM
She should have been Gamora. I can believe her as the deadliest woman in the Marvel Universe more than 55 lbs Z
McNyagano - 9/6/2013, 8:49 AM
@LEVITIKUZ

It's called speculating, ever heard of it?
BlackHulk - 9/6/2013, 8:50 AM
Maybe she will be Black Panthers love interest... Vanilla Madness
Omarvls - 9/6/2013, 8:53 AM
@LEVITIKUZ
There will be a Wonder Woman movie I would guess in 2016/2017 Guaranteed

DC/WB will start making 2 films a year after World Finest in 2015

2016
The Flash
Wonder Woman
2017
Justice League
Green Lanter Reboot (DC/WB start of their Cosmic Side)
maninfinesuit - 9/6/2013, 8:53 AM
Let's do this.

SimonM7 - 9/6/2013, 8:56 AM
@LEVITIKUZ

I wholeheartedly agree. However, I do think Captain Marvel/Carol is in a pretty good position to be given a push and become a staple Marvel character of her own, right now. You would need to rewrite the events leading up to her receiving her powers, and you'd have to sweep the male Captain Marvel under the rug a bit, but she's definitely primed for that sort of attention.

Hell, Batman had a gun and Superman just jumped really high. All of these things change. Psylocke has insanely convoluted history, but what really matters is who she is right now, and she's awesome. Only DC have the "luxury" to rewrite these things overtly because of their heavy-handed universe reboots, but given time, new status quos are established at Marvel, too.
ParisSun - 9/6/2013, 8:57 AM
I think she can do it. I would like Marvel to start putting in more hero cameos. Not necessarily in their uniforms but have Matt Murdock or Jennifer Walers show up as legal cousel for someone. Have Carol Davers flying a Quinjet. I don't need big hero appearances but it would be nice if MCU would pepper their movies with these types of nuggets.
fettastic - 9/6/2013, 8:57 AM
I hope she's improved her acting. She's only ever been passable.
McNyagano - 9/6/2013, 8:59 AM
@Omarvls

Sorry but unless it's either Bats or Supes, a WW, Flash and JL movie are not happening. WB doesn't have the balls to do it.
superotherside - 9/6/2013, 9:01 AM
Hope she's included in Avengers 2. Seriously there needs to be more women on the team and she would make perfect sense.

Levi It sounded like Vin was signed up to do something else. Marvel and Vin just chose the Groot role for now to please fans as Vin has a busy schedule right now and can't take on a huge role. In the future they may higher him to play someone else too.
Omarvls - 9/6/2013, 9:05 AM
@McNyagano

DC/WB is watching Marvel make billions off their characters
Do you really believe they are just going to sit back and do nothing when they think their heroes are more popular so they could even make more money.

DC/WB shared universe is coming guaranteed

2015
World Finest
2016
The Flash
Wonder Woman
2017
Justice League
Green Lantern Reboot
SimonM7 - 9/6/2013, 9:07 AM
@0megaDaGod, LEVITIKUZ

Actually, I think Black Widow could be excellent in her own movie, but certainly not in the kind of tent-pole release Marvel are gunning for with their 2-movies-a-year plan.

Black Widow would make for an excellent, low key spy thing with ties to her past. Something like the.. um... I forget what the mini-series was called... It was written by Marjorie Liu. Anyway, it's a short, clever, low key story with bursts of action ala Bourne, and something like that would make for a great little movie. But yeah, when they need to inflate it to blockbuster levels, it obviously falls apart. Hawkeye is frankly in the same, awkward, position.
Praetorian - 9/6/2013, 9:11 AM
@SimonM7 dude exactly what I was about to type, no joke.
