Chris Cooper On The "Very Strange" Introduction Of Norman Osborn In TASM 2

While talking to Moviefone about his role in the critically acclaimed August: Osage County, Cooper shares a few interesting tidbits on his take on Norman Osborn in Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Click on to find out what he had to say.

I think at this stage it's pretty obvious to everyone that it'll be the younger Osborn, Harry (Dane DeHann), that will suit up as the villainous Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and not his father Norman - but that doesn't mean there won't be any surprises in store when it comes to that character. In an interview with Moviefone, Oscar winner Chris Cooper remains as tight lipped as ever on specific details, but he does drop a couple of intriguing (and cryptic) hints about what we can expect to see from Norman in the future. Here's their exchange in full.

Was it a bit of a relief to shift gears and then do "Amazing Spider-Man 2"? Something a little lighter and more fun?

Um, well, when you see [laughs], when you see "Spider-Man 2," you'll realize this is the introduction to Norman Osborn, and apparently it's going to lead to other things down the road. But an actor has to do these big tent pole productions something like once every five years. It just keeps the name alive, as some of these smaller films that may not make it around the world tend not to do.

Does your character embrace his full villainy, his full Green Goblin side in this sequel?

All I can is this is a very strange introduction for Norman Osborn. I just can't reveal why it's that way, but this is not the beginning of Norman. It is the introduction, but it's not the beginning, and I think that's as far as I can go.

So, can you reveal if you did any green screen?

I did not.

So, that definitely suggests that Cooper didn't suit up in some form in this movie (though you never know of course) but from the sounds of things he'll definitely be returning to menace Spidey in a future movie..as part of the Sinister Six perhaps? More at the link below.

This is interesting, could still see Norman becoming the proper Green Goblin in TASM3, there's definitely something going on there, otherwise why go down the whole path of him being ill in the first film and presumably in TASM2, if that just leads to Harry...wouldn't be surprised if they do the opposite to Raimi's films and Harry dies, somehow leading Norman into being a Goblin...we'll see!

In the trailer, in the bed shot, he certainly had a very greenish-purple complexion, so maybe we'll see a proper transformation either at the very end, or in TASM3/Sinister Six

Can't wait!!
TheAbaryMan369 - 12/20/2013, 6:36 AM
Despite Harry being the Goblin in TASM 2, I'd still like to see Norman becoming the Goblin at some point in the future. Just please don't force it like you did with Harry as GG and with Rhino and with Mary Jane (with failed).
6of13 - 12/20/2013, 6:44 AM
Even though Harry will be the Goblin, Norman is looking kind of green in that pic.
MexicanSuperman - 12/20/2013, 6:46 AM
@TheAbaryMan369, how is Harry as Goblin and Rhino forced? You haven't seen the movie, so you can't say anything is forced until you have watched the film. Pual Giamatti said the the Rhino will have a very small part in the film, and he will return in TASM3. I don't know long will Harry be the Goblin, but I don't think it will be forced.
themidnightking - 12/20/2013, 6:49 AM
He said Strange! Dr. Strange will be in TASM 2! Spider-Man is in the MCU! lol
Spidey10 - 12/20/2013, 6:50 AM
Still dont think Harry is the Goblin and they hire someone who plays Hobgoblin....based on the pictures unless Harry becomes a pale faced blonde i dont think thats him
galschwartz - 12/20/2013, 6:50 AM
Read what the man said:
"this is not the beginning of Norman. It is the introduction, but it's not the beginning".

What I get from it is that he WAS Green Goblin in the past, maybe even for a long period, before Spider-man was even created in ASM.

Maybe he got sick due to the drug...
(kinda like Luthor getting cancer from his Kryptonite ring).

So Harry may become a Goblin in ASM 2, but he would still be the 2ND goblin.

fettastic - 12/20/2013, 6:53 AM
My theory is that Harry gets either severly injured or killed in his fight with Spider-Man. This causes Norman to use the serum. He does not become GG, but he does lead the Sinister Six.
themidnightking - 12/20/2013, 6:55 AM
@Spidey10 Maybe Harry goes Super Saiyan in this one.
TheSoulEater - 12/20/2013, 7:00 AM
I read this in his voice

AmazingFantasy - 12/20/2013, 7:03 AM
Obvs the real Goblin later on.
TheDpool - 12/20/2013, 7:03 AM
Good this is the best way for Norman to enter the movies I'm hoping we'll meet Norman as a sickly man Harry will become the Goblin in this movie but fails and maybe dies but a cure is found for Norman in Harrys blood which means either in Spiderman 3 or 4 or even better in the Sinister Six movie Norman becomes the Goblin (Id prefer the Ultimate version) giving Peter his biggest challenge.
HugoStrange87 - 12/20/2013, 7:03 AM
I've read elsewhere about the post credits scene of Normans cryogenically frozen head. Interesting.
6of13 - 12/20/2013, 7:04 AM
@galschwartz
I was thinking something similar. Everyone is essentially assuming that Norman will take an Oscorp serum to cure whatever is making him sick. But what if he already used Orcorp science in the past and it turned him into the goblin and whatever is making him sick now is a result of that. Perhaps even something Richard Parker was working on.
GodzillaKart - 12/20/2013, 7:22 AM
TASM2 look freaking fantastic! I hope it lives up to its trailer.
GrayMatter - 12/20/2013, 7:30 AM
My guess would be that Norman basically experimented on himself and took an early version of the serum, which is now making him sick.

But then we'll get hints that the prototype serum is actually transforming him into a goblin-montser thing. Ultimate style.
VIRILEMAN - 12/20/2013, 7:55 AM
Harry becoming the Goblin first is like She-Hulk becoming HULK before the real HULK. It just doesn't jive.
Enphlieuwince - 12/20/2013, 8:05 AM
I agree with galschawrtz; just because we don't get to see Norman as GG in this movie, doesn't mean that he still wasn't the GG first. We really have to see how this plays out before we start crying about how wrong it is.
Enphlieuwince - 12/20/2013, 8:07 AM
Yeah, he's looking kinda Goblin-y in that picture. I think he will be terrifying when he finally does turn.
crawley - 12/20/2013, 8:08 AM
I think they're going to use him in these films in a role like he had in Dark Reign, running HAMMER or Thunderbolts.
NinjaKickTheDamnRabbit - 12/20/2013, 8:08 AM
F@#K the GG. We have seen it, know it and its already been done. Hob Goblin would have been more interesting.
Nomis - 12/20/2013, 8:27 AM
GliderMan - 12/20/2013, 9:09 AM
His consciousness is from the Raimi universe!
Geotheleo - 12/20/2013, 9:38 AM
What if Norman already is gobby.. And the death of his son makes him reveal himself
CaptainAmerica31 - 12/20/2013, 9:54 AM
I think we'll get a more faithful look to the goblin with Norman, Harry seems to be the " Proto" goblin. I think Norman is sick because he has some rare disease, the curries what Richard was working on( and other stuff apparently). Richard refuses to hand over the formula, Norman has him killed, and now we are here. That is what cooper is probably trying to allude too.
StarYeezus - 12/20/2013, 9:56 AM
What if Goblin isn't Harry but actually a younger version Norman after taking the serum. Sure it's far-fetched but it would explain the blonde hair and the likeness to Harry. Also Cooper said his role is an "introduction" to Norman.
NovaCorpsFan - 12/20/2013, 11:01 AM
Screw the green bastard! Here's an actual Irish comic with a much better bastard!

sonofvenom5 - 12/20/2013, 11:29 AM
My theory Is this Richard parker creates the venom suit to cure Norman's sickness but it's too unstable for him harry is the giny pig for the goblin formula but we havent seen a clear look at the goblin yet so it still might be norman and peter assumes its harry either way I'm not to fund of the goblin's look
Cosmic1 - 12/20/2013, 12:57 PM
Not even gonna waste my time with this Spider-Man and the villains all created at or by oscorp, just a very stupid concept. I was a Spider-Man fan all my life until the diss appointment of a movie called the amazing Spider-Man, which has lowered my expectations for the second installment, especially after seeing the awfull looking Gillian's, Spider-mans costume looks good, the effects look good, but villian designs and everything revolving around oscorp = fail
iMVuze - 12/20/2013, 1:19 PM
@Cosmic1

Life long Spider-Man fan huh? Well, the Spectacular Spider-Man series everyone is a fan of did this SAME concept having MOST of the MAJOR villains all have Oscorp origins or connections. Examples? Norman, Harry, Rhino, Sandman, Dr. Octopus, Vulture, Electro and Venom. This came out BEFORE the movie so why are you complaining now is beyond me.
Jollem - 12/20/2013, 1:20 PM
gives to me the second trailer
KoonEl - 12/20/2013, 1:22 PM
I think we're getting both the Harry version of the Goblin ( a guy in a suit), and the Ultimate version (a guy who transformed himself live the Hulk)
typicalfanboy - 12/20/2013, 1:33 PM
not the beginning. got it...so it's the end?
MrCameron - 12/20/2013, 1:48 PM
Harry = Proto - Goblin

Norman = Green Goblin
Darth258 - 12/20/2013, 3:31 PM
If it's the introduction but not the beginning, will it mean he already used the goblin formula and he ended like this?
Maybe he was the Green Goblin around the time Peter's parents went missing.
gannicus - 12/20/2013, 3:36 PM
hmm well in the international trailer too amazing spiderman 2 we hear norman osbourne speak just like the goblin so we could see the change maybe the post credit scene or mid credit.
darthballz - 12/20/2013, 5:31 PM
@Spidey10 - "Still dont think Harry is the Goblin and they hire someone who plays Hobgoblin....based on the pictures unless Harry becomes a pale faced blonde i dont think thats him." -Exactly what I was thinking. I think it's the man in the Hat.
zefi - 12/20/2013, 11:01 PM
Guys i think that norman will be the green goblin in the final scene of tasm 2 ,for the normam /goblin i think that they use a physics trasformation like the ultimate gobby ,but he isnt big like hulk but he has an armor and a glider and the face is a mix to classic and ultimate..
