Some of you CBMers feel 2013 wasn't a particularly good year for our beloved comic book films, and obviously in terms of overall quality that's a debate worth having...but one thing is for sure, they certainly made quite a bit of coin! The Times has released a list of the top 10 highest grossing films of 2013, and with a whopping $1,215,439,994 worldwide box office gross, Iron Man 3 takes the top spot. The rest of the list is, predictably enough, made up of big budget sci-fi/action movies and animated adventures. At 2 there's Despicable Me 2, 3) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, 4) Man of Steel, 5) Monsters University, 6) Gravity, 7) Fast & Furious 6, 8) Oz the Great and Powerful, 9) Star Trek Into Darkness and at 10 we have World War Z.

NOTE: Although Iron Man 3 is sure to be safe at the top, the likes of Thor: The Dark World and The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug will likely impact this list in some way come December 31st, so we'll have an update around then.

Why's Thor not there? That grossed more than Star Trek?...

That list will move around a bit, Hobbit will probably end around $900 million, imagine Hunger Games will finish with about $800...

Glad Iron Man 3 done well for Marvel, despite being super disappointed by the film

One of those monster films is bound to overtake Avatar.

I hope it's AOU
MrCBM56 - 12/23/2013, 10:06 AM

Not a surprise to anyone.

Like it or not, a CBM dominated BO's numbers this year once again, and that's just awesome.
Tajin88 - 12/23/2013, 10:16 AM
Still the weakest of all CBMs.
DEVLIN712 - 12/23/2013, 10:21 AM
Sigh... Here we go

Man of Steel at #4? Not to shabby for the first movie of a franchise.
TheSuperguy - 12/23/2013, 10:30 AM
I knew that Iron Man 3 would be the top grosser of the year, I just was not expecting it to make that much money.
Bread - 12/23/2013, 10:30 AM
I'm glad a CBM wins the box office this year. Even if it was total garbage.
BeerForever667 - 12/23/2013, 10:31 AM
Last year a Marvel film won the "box-office war", this year it's the same...

HAHA!!! NOT BLOODY LIKELY! We're definitely in for some awesome films in 2015, don't get me wrong, but those numbers are just astronomical by comparison. Avengers is sitting at 3rd place $600+ million behind second place. Avengers + Thor: TDW = Titanic. Avengers is $1.2 billion behind #1. Avengers + Iron Man 3 = Avatar...

With the success of IM3......comedy is going to be a big part of Ant Man hence a comedy actor being cast.

KentParker - 12/23/2013, 10:32 AM
Worst MARVEL movie ever!!
knocturnalzen10 - 12/23/2013, 10:33 AM
after the 9th time watching seacrhing for hope in the flim. Tony becoming a splitter cel op out of nowhere. i'll just say the general audience will dictate how comics are written moving forward especially for marvel..............
gambgel - 12/23/2013, 10:33 AM
Man of Steel number 4

Congratulations Warner and Zack!! Not time for the sequel and that 1 billion!
MoonDoggyX - 12/23/2013, 10:35 AM
Grif must be getting soft because I completely agree with him! lol
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 12/23/2013, 10:35 AM
Iron Man is a cash cow. Hence his helmet being the main feature in the Avengers 2 trailer.
charlie2094 - 12/23/2013, 10:35 AM
Is this only domestic? If it's worldwide, Thor: The Dark World should be just behind Fast 6....?

Mediocre year for CBM's, but glad they all done well!
batman1216 - 12/23/2013, 10:36 AM
Although I did enjoy Ironman 3, it is dfinitely my least favorite comic movie of the year. Its numbers are a bit overrated though. It had the jump on everything with the coveted May date, the first big Marvel movie since The Avengers, brilliantly promoted internationally, especially in China, etc. Still it made the most and I did like it, but I enjoyed MOS, The Wolverine, Thor, Star Trek and Hunger Games far more.
ChuckV - 12/23/2013, 10:36 AM
Man of Steel comes in at #4.... 'nuff said.
knocturnalzen10 - 12/23/2013, 10:37 AM
@MoonDoggyX

AV2 may beat avatar if u look an see how IM3 made off the coattail of the first AV .................
alot will ride on winter solider i think if that does well AV2 is goin in ..... gotg is just made for comic fans don't expect much from is ticket sales wise
marantaz - 12/23/2013, 10:38 AM
There you go again, inciting a flame war. Isn't it customary to feature the subject of the article, the winner of the box office, not the fourth place (aka LOSER... not even a bronze medal!) finisher? Sad.

BUT... hey, let's not stop there! Lets get the details ...

IM3 - Domestic: $409.01M Foreign: $806.43M
MOS - Domestic: $291.04M Foreign: $371.80M

Totals - IM3: $1.2 Billion MOS: $662.84 Million

uh...oh my... I just realized... IM3 DOUBLED UP MOS worldwide!!

FLAME ON!!!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 12/23/2013, 10:39 AM
2008 is still the best year for comic book movies.

Hopefully 2015 mimics it.

@0mega

That's what I was thinking, but this top ten appears to be for the domestic box office, not worldwide, so Thor wouldn't be in it

ALmight - 12/23/2013, 10:45 AM
