Deadline reports that DreamWorks has made a deal with Rupert Sanders to direct a live action adaptation of the Japanese futuristic thriller, with a new script from William Wheeler. The original Ghost In The Shell Manga was written by Masamune Shirow, and the subsequent film adaptation is up there with Akira as a benchmark Anime on which all that followed would be judged against. The story follows a member of an agency known as Section 9 named Motoko Kusanagi, as she searches for a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. The live action film will be produced by Avi Arad, and Steven Paul.

This is my favorite anime of all time. Not sure if I should get hyped for this.
ShawnMadden - 1/24/2014, 4:33 PM
Ah damn. I can dig it.
NovaCorpsFan - 1/24/2014, 4:34 PM
If this is your favourite anime of all time, you must have very odd taste in anime. I prefer Mushishi. That shit was trippy as hell, but makes you think too.
Brainiac13 - 1/24/2014, 4:35 PM
This could be good! ;)

Enphlieuwince - 1/24/2014, 4:39 PM

McNyagano - 1/24/2014, 4:39 PM
Never heard of it. Is it any good?
NovaCorpsFan - 1/24/2014, 4:44 PM
It's on Netflix McNya, so you could check it out. I didn't like it, but anime tastes are incredibly variable.
marvel72 - 1/24/2014, 4:47 PM
as long as it has a japanese cast i'm all for it.
Jollem - 1/24/2014, 4:47 PM
i love the part where the one girl wakes up and puts on a jacket in a silhouette against the sun. beautiful animation
RorMachine - 1/24/2014, 4:55 PM
It's not gonna have a Japanese cast.
NovaCorpsFan - 1/24/2014, 4:58 PM
Oh well the, nope. Definitely not seeing an anime adaptation without a Japanese cast. Remember Dragonball?
sanyaya - 1/24/2014, 5:01 PM

@ Nova

Oh god! Dragon Ball Evolution and The Last Airbender are what will be shown 24/7 in a never ending loop in Hell.
InfiniteMonkey - 1/24/2014, 5:07 PM
LMFAO! @AGoodHonestMan
MexicanSuperman - 1/24/2014, 5:07 PM
@NovaCorpsFanGonnaFlipYa, you do know that there is no such thing as Japan in the world of Dragon Ball? The whole world is one bigass continent like Pangaea. Dragon Ball is based on a Chinese tale.
AGoodHonestMan - 1/24/2014, 5:09 PM
This movie will fail. White washing a Japanese classic manga/anime will never work. The fanbase will be against it and it'll end up like White Akira.
BenjiWest - 1/24/2014, 5:10 PM
Way to late for this craaaaaap
TheOverlord - 1/24/2014, 5:10 PM
1) not needed - the anime is perfect; and 2) if they do this anyway, it better be rated a hard R or it will suck balls.
DEFA - 1/24/2014, 5:13 PM
- wow, cool news....!!!
BenjiWest - 1/24/2014, 5:14 PM
What happened to Akira?? Now akira is classic...
BenjiWest - 1/24/2014, 5:15 PM
I hope Kristen Stewart gets the lead, lol

HeadPool420 - 1/24/2014, 5:16 PM
I hope Hollywood doesn't rape the story!!!!
marvel72 - 1/24/2014, 5:17 PM
@ RorMachine

shit man, haven't they learnt anything from the likes of speed racer, the last airbender & dragonball z.

you've got to try & keep it faithful to the source,no need to change the race of the characters.
Omarvls - 1/24/2014, 5:19 PM
This is like what 10 years to late?
EtriganTheDemon - 1/24/2014, 5:25 PM
Ron Perlman as Batou?

Either way, this is going to be a train wreck.

Humperdink - 1/24/2014, 5:27 PM
@InfiniteMonkey

I see FAIL coming.
Japanese names with Caucasians. LOL NEEEEEEEEEEEXT!

But isn't that how it is in most anime?
Caucasian looking characters with Japanese names?

Most of them are blonde, red-heads with round blue or green eyes.
The main characters almost always have Caucasian characteristics so I don't think it matters.

A pale White actress, with blue eyes and black hair perfectly fits how that character looks.

Until the anime characters look DISTINCTLY Japanese and not some ambiguous eur-asian mixture....or sometimes just plain Caucasian...I say let them cast White actors.
Shamo - 1/24/2014, 5:34 PM
solid crew so far. Snow White and the Huntsman was trash but mostly due to Kristen Stwart
Jollem - 1/24/2014, 5:35 PM
eXistenZ, ghost in the shell, johnny mnemonic, neuromancer and others were well before the matrix
JimmyPesto - 1/24/2014, 5:35 PM
Hmmmm...
Jollem - 1/24/2014, 5:36 PM
i thought snow white was pretty decent
MiIIes - 1/24/2014, 5:40 PM
Motoko Kusanagi, one of these would be perfect.

The anime is awesome...
RetroFit - 1/24/2014, 5:47 PM
This is my fav anime of all time. So I'm pretty much expecting them to make a mess of it.
Spock - 1/24/2014, 5:50 PM
I hope they do it right. Please no white washing as others have stated already!.
Spock - 1/24/2014, 5:51 PM
@ McNyagano the Matrix movies are inspired after Ghost in the Shell.
InfiniteMonkey - 1/24/2014, 5:53 PM
@Humperdink
Quite right mate. You have a very sound point.
I guess my concern is, there are certain key elements about anime that make them stand out and when translated to be Americanised, it all goes down the toilet.
Past adapted anime's have proven that.

In order for this to be a success with the purist and new audience is keeping some semblance of the source like someone else has said. Also, the two main characters of this anime are very very European in looks. They may be able to pull it off but, one caveat, they have Japanese names.
There may be a problem there.
Also the script. It has to be something very very very cool.
