Carice Van Houten Defends The Plentiful Nudity On GAME OF THRONES

The gorgeous Dutch actress, who plays the mysterious witch Melisandre on HBO's fantasy drama series, has defended the regular instances of people getting butt nekkid on the show. She also teases a little of what we can expect from her character in season 4.

HBO's Game Of Thrones has come in for a fair bit of criticism for it's liberal use of sex and nudity, but one actress from the show definitely doesn't see what all the fuss is about. While attending a press event in London to promote Season 4 of Game Of Thrones, Carice van Houten (Melisandre) was quick to jump to the defense of the series when asked about the bare skin on display. “We can see machine guns but we can’t see f**king – sorry – people? I really don’t get, I have to make a point here. Who sleeps with their bra on? I mean, sorry if that’s a Dutch approach but I think we need to get used to it. It’s part of life.” Whatever your views on the amount of nudity, she's right -- we can see shootings, blood, guts, severed heads and disembowelments all day long and nobody bats an eyelid; but if someone gets their kit off there's uproar! Van Houten also comments on where we'll find her character in season 4, admitting that we won't see quite as much of Melisandre as last year (boo!) “Stannis has a light season this year but we have a few meaty scenes", she promises. "Our storyline is going to move somewhere else and it’s going to be interesting because it’s going to collide with a world which we also know, and what’s going to happen there.” More at the link below.

Also there's no problem with her being nude ;)
Nubase - 2/13/2014, 7:58 AM

batz11 - 2/13/2014, 7:58 AM
She does have a kinda creepy sexiness, not bad outta the GoT garb either...
kevberg - 2/13/2014, 7:58 AM
This chick is a loon.

theoretically I dont want may kids walking in on some chick getting pounded..NOR do I want them walking in on throats being slit and beheadings.

I dont blame the show and dont have a problem, but when someone is this brazen and stupid. I cant stand it.

If she can understand that , then she must be a frigging teenager.

@ kevberg

LOL! I agree, this show has to be watched when my kids are sound asleep.
Dotanuki - 2/13/2014, 8:01 AM
@kevberg

It sounds like you are jumping to conclusions that her words do not suggest. In no way does she indicate that either is suitable for children.
RorMachine - 2/13/2014, 8:02 AM
She's not talking about what is and isn't suitable viewing for kids..she's talking about the adult's reactions to it. I think it goes without saying that nobody should be letting their children watch Game Of Thrones!
Doopie - 2/13/2014, 8:03 AM
she has a point i think. when i was in the states a few years ago i was amazed at the amount of violence that was on tv at a relatively early hour. remember watching saw 3 (i think) with the girl chained up and frozen. the death by ice was fine but the boobs blurred out. strange
InfiniteMonkey - 2/13/2014, 8:04 AM
Two thumbs up and a boner for me.

If you don't like it, don't watch.

If you have an opinion about it, well, that's your right. LOL
AlphaDean - 2/13/2014, 8:04 AM
I like her attitude
marvel72 - 2/13/2014, 8:04 AM

JoeMomma29 - 2/13/2014, 8:05 AM
@ Alpha

Those are the keys to a successful movie or show on cable

1. Sex
2. Nudity
3. Violence

Yeah I don't like her comments either.

Very snob woman.

No Problem with Nudity unless it is Not Naked guys.

Can't wait for 300 sequel.
Pasto - 2/13/2014, 8:07 AM
I have no problem with it. I ENCOURAGE women to sleep nude and be nude. I WANT them to do it. Please, do it.
JoeMomma29 - 2/13/2014, 8:07 AM
@ Driver

LOL! OMG I cannot stop laughing at your comment.
JoeMomma29 - 2/13/2014, 8:08 AM
In fact Pasto pays women to sleep nude.
Polygame - 2/13/2014, 8:09 AM
since when Games Of Thrones is intended for kids?
VolkanTaskillas - 2/13/2014, 8:09 AM
Nudity is the only thing that bring audience to the show!
kevberg - 2/13/2014, 8:09 AM
Fair enough, but when people use the stupid " You can watch people using guns but you cant watch a tit..."

I get Irrate...its stupid. A story has conflict...guns, knives a laser gun, Salt or a baseball bat are all tools in that conflict...

Nudity and SEX can be different things, but theres nothing delicate or beautiful about the sh@t going on in the show. Most of the stuff in the show is also Brutal, Cruel and intense.

And I LIKE the show.

Do agree, some people do seem to be over sensitive to a bit of nudity...everything else is fine, but not nudity, apparently

It's inappropriate for kids sure, but kids wouldn't/shouldn't be watching Game of Thrones anyway. For more adult content, it's fine, shouldn't really be a problem with it..

Generally, there's often a reason for it in Game of Thrones anyway and is not just there for the sake of it. Sometimes it is sure, but not often, usually serves a purpose
Pasto - 2/13/2014, 8:12 AM
I like nudity when it's called for. Shower scene...*Shrugs shoulders* Thats actually the only scenario I can think of nudity being involved in. But I have yet to watch something where nudity serves a purpose. I feel like nudity is just something where it's like "Hey, we can do this and get away with it."
CherryBomb - 2/13/2014, 8:14 AM
Yes! You tell 'em girl.
I hate seeing clothed sex on TV it's just stupid.
kevberg - 2/13/2014, 8:15 AM
..and Peter Dinklage should get awards out the wazzooo. He carries most of that show.
mgeoff88 - 2/13/2014, 8:15 AM
I'm just going to say this, sex is much, much, much less worse than graphic violence. Kids shouldn't be exposed to either though. That's how they lose their innocence, which is not good.

That is actually what happened to Gusto when he watched Caged Heat at the age of 10... ;P
RorMachine - 2/13/2014, 8:15 AM
Her point is that one thing is completely natural and something we all do (whenever possible) , the other is VIOLENT MURDER! And more people tend to have a bigger problem with the latter than the former on tv shows and in movies. And I think we can all agree that's a bit mental.
Pasto - 2/13/2014, 8:15 AM
b&y
I have sex fully clothed. What, am I the minority?

I kid, sex and cleaning yourself. Only reason for nudity in my humble opinion.
CherryBomb - 2/13/2014, 8:15 AM

@Pasto
So you've never walked around the house naked? Also people have sex naked!
Enphlieuwince - 2/13/2014, 8:16 AM

"She's not talking about what is and isn't suitable viewing for kids..she's talking about the adult's reactions to it. I think it goes without saying that nobody should be letting their children watch Game Of Thrones!"

Exactly! Stop putting words in her mouth to satiate your conservative viewpoint of her statement.

Also, this proves that not every women is ashaed of the human body. If she is proud of her artistic expression, a tastefully, faithful adaptation of a costume like Wonder Woman's shouldn't be so fiercely debated. It's just bare legs after all...
Pasto - 2/13/2014, 8:16 AM
*Reasons. This talk of nudity has all of my grammar screwed up.
Orphix - 2/13/2014, 8:16 AM
I've never had a problem with sex and nudity on screen and GoT uses it occasionally for story telling purposes or character development.

BUT

There seem to be a hell of a load of times when it's just there to jazz up a boring exposition (or Sex Position and it's dryly been called) scene.
CherryBomb - 2/13/2014, 8:16 AM

@kevberg

I agree in some sense but at the time when the story is set sex was brutal, especially with soldiers and warriors with all their anger. And it's also loving too, they explore both sides. It was a dark time.
Pasto - 2/13/2014, 8:17 AM
[bleep]ing hormones my ass.
CherryBomb - 2/13/2014, 8:17 AM

I do think GoT throws sex in a lot of the time just be "edgy".
kevberg - 2/13/2014, 8:17 AM
She (van Houten) seems to have the problem. Shes the one complaining. Im complaining about her complaining.
beto - 2/13/2014, 8:18 AM
SPOILER ALERT!!!

Melisandre is going to kill JOffrey... with sex
Pasto - 2/13/2014, 8:19 AM
Walking around nude? That is WITCHCRAFT!
