Neil Gaiman Updates SANDMAN - Seems Optimistic About The "First Movie"

The writer hasn't sounded very excited at the prospect of his masterpiece being adapted for the screen (mainly because he's been involved with past failed incarnations) before, but now he discusses meeting with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and seems to confirm that more than one movie is planned.

There have been several attempts to adapt Neil Gaiman's incredible Sandman series into a live-action movie, but in the past the writer has told stories of the various reasons it never came to be -- and didn't sound very confident that it ever would. But recently we learned that Joseph-Gordon Levitt was on board as producer (with a possibility that he'll also star and direct) on Warner Bros.' latest attempt to bring Morpheus and the Endless to the big screen, with scriptwriter Jack Thorne on writing duties. This evidently sits well with Gaiman, as he brings those in attendance at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose an update on all he knows about the "first movie".

"Joseph Gordon-Levitt, of all people, is an enormous ‘Sandman’ fan. He and David Goyer talked about it, they’ve come up, I believe, with a treatment of what they want the story of the first movie to be. They are talking to an incredible writer [Jack Thorne], who I coincidentally already knew, because he did the movie script for ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane,’ so I’ve met him and loved his treatment of my work. And Wednesday afternoon I will be spending with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and talking ‘Sandman!’ That’s pretty much everything I know. Now you know as much as I know."

Gaiman has never been one to mince his words, so if he's happy with how things are progressing Id say that's a very good sign. More at the link below.
