Last night we found out that Marvel plan to release their third Captain America movie on May 6, 2016. This just so happens to be the current release date for Warner Bros. hugely anticipated sequel to Man Of Steel, which will feature the unprecedented combo of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman (among others).
It's definitely a bold move by Marvel considering what they'd be up against, but as Forbes' Scott Mendelson rightly points out, they don't actually have to "win" this battle -- it's DC/WB with everything to lose. Even if Batman VS. Superman triumphs in Box Office takings (which it probably would), all Marvel has to do is put a small dent in those takings to ultimately come out on top. They have numerous other releases on their slate, whereas Warner Bros. are banking everything on this team-up flick to successfully solidify their shared DC movie universe. If WB don't rake in enough coin, it could well jeopardize those plans.
Then again, Marvel are so used to being the big boys in the playground that I don't think voluntarily taking a hit on one of their movies -- even if that means hurting Zack Snyder's sequel in the process -- would sit very well with them at the end of the day.
Of course it's all theoretical, and I'm willing to bet it will be Warner Bros. that moves, but lets say they do end up going toe-toe-toe..who's your money on?
