Ror Reviews: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

I think the general consensus on Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man was that it was a good movie, but a sequel definitely needed to improve on a number of things. Now with a bigger budget, new villains, and teases of a controversial plot point from the comics..did we get what we wanted? Click for my take.

While watching The Amazing Spider-Man 2 I was stuck by how unlike director Marc Webb's 500 days Of Summer it was..and how that was most definitely not a good thing. Whereas that movie told a subtle, affecting "boy meets girl" story with some inspired musical accompaniment, his Spidey sequel is borderline ham-fisted in its attempts to show us just how in love Peter and Gwen are, and the resulting schmaltz is not helped by some truly bizarre song choices. Webb has basically taken the things that worked best in the Amazing Spider-Man and turned them up to eleven -- but as we know only too well around these parts, bigger does not always equal better.

The action scenes, at least, do benefit from this though. Webb's upped the ante considerably and there are some very exciting and inventive (though keep an eye on that slow-mo Mr. Snyder Webb!) scraps between Spidey and Electro. Although the latter's powers definitely make things interesting from a visual standpoint, the character is another disappointing baddie I'm sorry to report.

Despite a good turn from Rhys Ifans, The Amazing Spider-Man's Lizard just wasn't original or interesting enough to make an impact -- plus, he looked a bit crap to boot. Now in this sequel, we get Jamie Foxx's Electro: think Batman Forever's Riddler crossed with Dr. Manhattan and you're close. The script was clearly going for a sympathetic angle with his geeky, lonely pre-electrified Max Dillon persona, but he comes across as a creepy stalker who transforms into a much more dangerous, blue creepy stalker. Foxx is fine, but any actor would be limited by this role.

Dane DeHaan fares better as Peter's childhood pal, and future Green Goblin, Harry Osborn. He plays the arrogant, but wounded heir to the Osborn empire well, and when he eventually Goblins up he's actually pretty damn terrifying. Yes he does slightly resemble Billy Idol on crack, but DeHaan does so much with this character -- and with only a handful of scenes -- that he overcomes that. It's just a shame that his whole arc is so rushed. Say what you will about the third installment, but at least Sam Raimi and co. had (or seemed to anyway) a plan mapped out for their trilogy. So many of the scenes in Webb's sequel seem like they're just there to hit the necessary beats as we approach the finale, but without ever really gelling together to form a cohesive narrative.

It needs to be said though that the many problems evident in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are no fault of the two leads. Andrew Garfield is once again spot on as Spidey, and he has the support of a never better Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. their chemistry is strong enough to survive the somewhat lazy script, and they manage to force a bit of genuine emotion into the proceedings -- especially towards the end.

Without coming right out and saying it..yes, that thing you likely figured would happen, happens -- and is handled very, very well. The rest of the movie may struggle with its tone, but once it finally decides where its going and sets events in motion, it achieves something you wouldn't have thought possible going by the first hour and half: an incredibly tense, heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting finale.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is redeemed by an (yes, I'll say it) amazing ending, it's just unfortunate that most of the rest of the film is a bit of a sporadically entertaining mess. Still, the performances and enormous sense of fun make it very difficult to dislike..just manage your expectations and you'll have a good time.

So, considering that Garfield sucks, and you said that was one of the main things that was good about the movie . . . . this movie is going to be as terrible as the first.

Cool.
MitchConner - 4/14/2014, 5:39 PM
Ouch
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 4/14/2014, 5:39 PM
I trust your review Ror. Was never expecting this to be amazing.
ForMeToPoopOn - 4/14/2014, 5:41 PM
"...just manage your expectations and you'll have a good time."

Sounds good... for me to poop on!
MitchConner - 4/14/2014, 5:41 PM
But with that said, I didn't care for the first and barely got interested in the second since Cap 2's trailer...sorry, people on this site trash him constantly, but in my opinion, Toby is still Spidey...and as much as everyone hates him, I still like Franco as the Goblin...the new guys, the new movie, just too teeny for me...maybe I'm just getting old...
ForMeToPoopOn - 4/14/2014, 5:41 PM
No, but seriously... about what I'm expecting. Thanks for the review, Ror.
Humperdink - 4/14/2014, 5:42 PM

Sigh...well...I'll still check it out but I already had a feeling.
MitchConner - 4/14/2014, 5:42 PM
Hell while I'm at it I'm going to throw Franco a bone for Apes..everyone trashes him here but I thought he was solid...yup I'm getting old, rambling
Brainiac13 - 4/14/2014, 5:43 PM
Still gonna be big at the BO.

ezio619 - 4/14/2014, 5:43 PM
ah well,it may atleast be decent, lets see,i already wasnt liking the origin of electro and it seems it doesnt work,ah well, lets see shall we
JamesMan - 4/14/2014, 5:43 PM
I haven't seen the movie yet but I think the whole lonely creepy stalker angle was exactly what they were going for. He literally feels like he has no reason to even exist but when he's told by Spidey that they're buds he finds a purpose, but his downfall comes from his obsession with this one purpose. So when he finds out this thing that he has held so high up is "revealed" to be a falsehood his whole world crashes down and he gets angry. I consider that rather sad.
Mazoku - 4/14/2014, 5:44 PM
I agree with Doom

I throw up a little in my mouth every time I recall this scene from the first one. Terrible acting terrible writing. Spiderman 3 was far from a good film but Raimi's original two Spiderman films were far superior.

Highflyer - 4/14/2014, 5:45 PM
Why do I have a feeling that I'm going to to really like this movie?
JamesMan - 4/14/2014, 5:45 PM
^I'm referring to Electro of course
dio - 4/14/2014, 5:46 PM
Give the rights back to Archie comics!
TheRationalNerd - 4/14/2014, 5:46 PM
Pouring out one for poor ole JJJ...

I'm sure everyone will have a different experience though.

DestroyerofHaters - 4/14/2014, 5:46 PM
Spidey picking on a criminal seems like Spider Man to me.
Highflyer - 4/14/2014, 5:47 PM
I understand if people don't like the new film but come on, let go of the raimi films already. They were awesome... i mean 1 and 2 but I don't hear people still moan how they still like Reeve's version better.
SuperCat - 4/14/2014, 5:47 PM
Figured it would get about 3 stars. I'll still catch it.
RorMachine - 4/14/2014, 5:47 PM
They are going for stalker, but slightly sympathetic stalker...he just comes across as a [frick]ing weirdo! I didn't give a shit what happened to him.
JamesMan - 4/14/2014, 5:48 PM
Hey, speaking of Archie, I wonder how the old ginger is doing! Oh... oh...

Mazoku - 4/14/2014, 5:48 PM
@MitchConner

Dude completely agree with you! Tobery Maguire was perfect as Spiderman. He embodied Peter Parker the geek and the smarta** perfectly. He played high school Peter's awkwardness perfectly! He wasn't some cool kid skate boarding while he learns to web swing. Teenage girls wouldn't have posters of him on their walls. Sadly though I doubt this will get rebooted for quite some time.

Warning to irregular users-This review will cause a large wave of people to suddenly believe there constant negatively truly has purpose. They will accept this review as absolute fact. Some will even accept it as their own personal opinion.

You have been warned.

xStarLordx - 4/14/2014, 5:49 PM
Still don't get why everyone hated the first movie.
notmuchtotellreally - 4/14/2014, 5:49 PM
This review is shit.
ezio619 - 4/14/2014, 5:49 PM
i know i am the minority in this opinion but as people know,im not a big fan of the raimi films, i think the first two are OK and 3 is bad, i could never connect with tobey as peter, he felt too timid, insecure and lack of a better word, whiny and his relationship with mj was just bad,it was not well done imo,i liked the first amazing spiderman better then all 3 raimi films,i connected more with andrews peter because i felt his pain and anger due to his parents just leaving him one day and not telling him why they left, he had a chip on his shoulder, much like the peter in amazing fantasy 15 who while being a nerd, had a bit of a chip on his shoulder and i loved his relationship with gwen, anyway i think the first one is really good but i agree the lizard was not a well developed villain, he wasnt fleshed much at all, lets see what i think of this one
TheRationalNerd - 4/14/2014, 5:50 PM
I think I'll still enjoy it. It's Spider-Man! It should be a fun ride, doesn't have to be that serious and etc. Still looking forward to it!
DrDoom - 4/14/2014, 5:50 PM
@StarLord

Because it's shit and is a horrible disservice to Spider-Man as a character.
Nick56 - 4/14/2014, 5:52 PM
"think the general consensus on Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man was that it was a good movie" No.

Im going into this movie with extremely low expectations. The first one wasn't terrible, but it was just such a pointless, boring, misguided rehash. This one looks like an overpacked mess. We shall see though.
DestroyerofHaters - 4/14/2014, 5:53 PM
You taking the name DrDoom is a horrible disservice to him as a character.

Too easy.
CyberInflames - 4/14/2014, 5:54 PM
Funny how you're never nitpicking on all the Marvel movies you always rate 5/5 stars.
Just saying.
TheBaroness89 - 4/14/2014, 5:54 PM
I think it will be a good popcorn fun colorful movie - I'm not expecting anything more than a movie experience worth my money. I don't like the original Raimi trilogy outside of Spider-Man 2.5 so....the Webb movies have been a pleasant diversion.
Good review- I will go in with lowered expectations.
ManCalledSting - 4/14/2014, 5:55 PM
Starlord: Because people live in the pass, and are cynical. I personally thought TASM was a really good film, and better than Raimi's films.
TheAmericanPatriot - 4/14/2014, 5:55 PM
Someone I know saw this movie already and said it sucked hard.
SuperCat - 4/14/2014, 5:56 PM
Noticed Ror didn't write about Rhino. That bad?
Mazoku - 4/14/2014, 5:57 PM
Like Doom said, Peter Parker is a nerd, hes awkward timid not confident (at least at first). I didnt get that vibe from TASM. He starts dating the hottest girl at school halfway through the movie, he's a skateboarder, does his hair, wears skinny jeans for Christ's sake. Where's the pocket protector? The vest and tie?

Critics at Rotten Tomatoes seem to love The Amazing Spiderman 2.

I think comic book fans like Ror are to tough on comic book movies sometimes
TheRationalNerd - 4/14/2014, 5:57 PM
@xStarLordx

The first film was alright (7.5/10 for me) It just had some cheesy/messed up moments...

"Peter throwing the football at the goalpost (denting it crucially) and everyone just ignores it like it's nothing out of the ordinary."

"The spin web kiss on the balcony. lol"

"That's how you repay me!" (Ratchet Accent)

"Missing the (With great power comes...etc) line"
