New Big-Screen Adaptation Of THE PHANTOM In The Works?

It is according to The Tracking Board anyway, though they tend to be hit-and-miss with their scoops. They report that a big-screen reboot of the DC Comics character created by Lee Falk is coming our way, with Ray Donovan producer Mark Gordon behind it.

Apparently Mark Gordon is bringing The Phantom back to the big screen. The cult  superhero has been the focus of countless tv, film, animated and comic book adaptations since his creation back in 1936 -- most recently a 2009 tv series that lasted only one season, and most memorably (though definitely not for the right reasons) the 1996 big-screen flop starring Billy Zane. That's not to say there's no potential there; the character has endured for good reason, and has appeared in a number of interesting incarnations over the years -- arguably the best being the Phantom 2040 animated series. This latest version has Drew Simon on board as executive producer for The Mark Gordon Company, and they are said to be currently looking for a new writer. Will you be glad to have "the ghost who walks" back? Or do you think he's had his day? Sound off in the usual place.

If true, that's one movie to cross off the 9 movies WB is doing...

1. Batman vs Superman
2. Justice League
3. Shazam
4. Metal Men
5. The Phantom
6. 100 Bullets
7. Fables

I hope the last two WILL ACTUALLY BE CONNECTED TO THE DCCU. It makes NO sense not to connect Metal Men and Shazam to the DCCU. I can understand the others, but c'mon WB!!! Shazam belongs in the DCCU AT LEAST. I can understand not doing Metal Men, but Shazam was born for the DCCU!

First one was cheesy as hell . Maybe they can turn it around. Possibly have Zane play the villain . NOT !
BatManHeisenberg - 4/30/2014, 5:27 PM
Lesser known characters? How about, I don't know, a Flash movie, Batman reboot, Wonder Woman movie, Green Lantern reboot? Like it's cool and everything you want to honor other characters, but what about the ones that actually might make you a good chunk of money!?

I remember watching this as a little, little kid and liking it, which is why i will never watch it again.

Phantom isn't a DC property...
CapFan79 - 4/30/2014, 5:46 PM
I like the 1996 film, Treat Williams hammy performance is the only low point. Sci-Fi did a miniseries a few years back that sucked. This and The Shadow done right could be pulpy fun!
Gyasiman - 4/30/2014, 5:49 PM
What's up with all these obscure DC characters getting adaptions? There so many characters in the DC universe to take advantage of, that all these Vertigo and random characters like Metal Man and The Phanton are just insulting.
NoMore - 4/30/2014, 5:50 PM
PHANTOM ISN'T A DC CHARACTER!!!!
CoulsonLives - 4/30/2014, 5:58 PM
I keep seeing this guy in my newspaper... So what does he actually do?
RorMachine - 4/30/2014, 5:58 PM
He's been published by lots of companies..including Marvel. But I thought he originated at DC ..at least after his comic strip run.

ChiliConCarney - 4/30/2014, 6:03 PM

MajorTom - 4/30/2014, 6:04 PM

ChiliConCarney - 4/30/2014, 6:04 PM

Nomis - 4/30/2014, 6:06 PM
DC Comics was one of the many publishers of the PHANTOM comic.

"Pay respects for one of the characters that Batman was inspired from you DC fanboys."

LMFAO! Like you pay any respects to DC. The company that inspired Marvel, and almost all of their universe.
Readdacomics1 - 4/30/2014, 6:17 PM
He was created as a comic strip by Lee Falk. The rights have bounced around different comic and production companies for years. He's on the mantle with the Lone Ranger, Tarzan, Flash Gordon, Zorro and the Shadow. I would love to see all these characters have movies done right. But after the Depp Ranger disaster I have little hope.
NoMore - 4/30/2014, 6:17 PM
Many publishers, like Marvel and Dynamite. Call him a "Dc property" isn't right.
NicolausCopernicus - 4/30/2014, 6:22 PM
do it like cloud atlas
REPOMAN - 4/30/2014, 6:25 PM

Before he died in 1989, Sergio Leone was about to sign on to direct an adaptation of The Phantom.

This is diarrhea

[frick] yeah bring it on! I loved the Billy Zane movie even though he was wrong for the part with his big round head. And even then though I was disappointed that they showed his face.

The Phantom has such a strong mythos and interested setting, great back story. Get this done properly and look to things like Indy and a Temple of Doom for inspiration. And include pirates. Phantom's always busting up pirates.
case - 4/30/2014, 6:30 PM
Repoman! No [frick]en way!

If that went to its full potential that would have been so sick.
GliderMan - 4/30/2014, 6:32 PM
These guys really don't want a DCCU, do they?
ThatOneDude - 4/30/2014, 6:34 PM
[frick] yeah I'm all for a new Phantom film! I love all the classic noir heroes.
Would also love to see a new The Shadow and Rocketeer films made as well.
KungFuGee - 4/30/2014, 6:42 PM
Just let that die...
There is no Need or Want for a Phantom movie. No One Cares about the Phantom. Jerks.
