Comic Book History

Who is WAR MACHINE?
WAR MACHINE is James Rhodes a Marvel superhero appearing mostly in Iron Man related comic books. James Rhodes first appeared in Iron Man #118 (January 1979) by David Michelinie, John Byrne and Bob Layton.
First Appearance

James Rhodes was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force who served tours of duty in Southeast Asia. A combat pilot, he was stranded in the jungle behind enemy lines after his helicopter was shot down. He encounters Iron Man while he was escaping from his captors in his first prototype suit of powered armor.

Tony Stark would offer Jim Rhodes to work for him, which would later turn into a strong friendship.

Rhodes would become Stark's confidante knowing his secret of being Iron Man. When devastating personal problems caused Tony Stark to abuse alcohol and become incapable of using the Iron Man armor responsibly, Rhodes put it on in order to defend his friend's company.

Still using the Mantle or Iron Man, Jim Rhodes joins the West Coast AVENGERS and had several adventures with them.

Tony Stark would fix his life and return to wearing the Iron Man armor, but he gave Rhodey another armor, which would make Rhodey his own hero known as the WAR MACHINE.

In one storyline, James Rhodes would lose the WAR MACHINE armor in the time stream. This prompted Rhodes to return to civilian life thought that would not last long as he ended up acquiring a brand new alien armor known as the Eidolon Warwear. The warwear system needs an organic partner to function. It bonds with the partner at the genetic level and cannot be separated from its host without killing the host. The resulting bodyglove-like suit has the ability to appear and disappear. This suit also has the power to heal its wearer's injuries.

Returning to service as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Jim Rhodes would guard the mutants as the commanding officer and head combat instructor for Sentinel Squad O*N*E* and as a key member of the Office of National Emergency. He used an armor that was similar to the design of previous Iron Man powered armors and was based on the primary Sentinel piloted armors that the squad used in combat. The armor was derived of S.H.I.E.L.D. technology and Stark-designed upgrades. While in this outfit, Jim Rhodes would also pilot a larger advanced Sentinel model codenamed "WAR MACHINE". The armors were constructed of a unique mix of steel and fiberglass and contained many offensive and defensive improvements in weaponry and enhancements.

Rhodes would later return to an actual WAR MACHINE suit during the Fifty State Initiative where he was made field commander and a director of Camp Hammond to help train SHRA (Super Hero Registration Act) registered recruits.

Jim Rhodes would then become a military consultant at a base in Dubai and test piloting combat planes. Terrorists bombed the base, where Rhodes works at, and Jim Rhodes was severely injured. Dieing from his injuries Tony Stark saved his with life cybernetic implants and James becomes a cyborg.

During the alien Skrulls invasion, Rhodey received a distress signal from Tony Stark that instructed Rhodey to take command of a space satellite that he had constructed. The control pod of the station enabled Rhodey to transform the entire satellite into a giant suit of hi-tech armor. With this armor, he was able to successfully repel a Skrull armada approaching Earth.

Jim Rhodes, with Tony Stark's permission, went back to working for the U.S. government as "Iron Man 2.0". This was an attempt by Stark to keep the government from building their own Iron Man without his permission. He considered Rhodes the only person he trusted to pilot the government-owned suit. After Rhodes' WAR MACHINE armor was severely damaged, Stark upgraded it. The new armor has phasing and invisibility abilities.

CBM FIGHT CLUB CHALLENGE

Message to the CBM community:
To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not, please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. Howard was alright as Rhodes. I think Cheadle did a great job.

Ever since the 90s, I said if an Iron Man movie ever came to be, I thought Will Smith would have been the perfect guy to play War Machine. I still wish that would have been the case...

Anyone else think Cheadle was just... bland as Rhodes? It was a complete Meh performance...

We need someone charasmatic like Jamie Foxx to go toe 2 toe with RDJ!

Chreadle sucked as Rhodey. Unfortunately, there aren't too many black actors in Hollywood that would work for the part. They're either a) Too "A" list (Denzel, W Smith) and couldn't play second fiddle to RDJ b) Think they're about to pop from "B" list to "A" list (Terrence H, Idris E) and want too much money or C) Below "B" list and too obscure to bring anything to the role (I can't name any examples...they're too obscure). I wish they would've coughed up the dough and kept Terrence. I'm sure it was a sound business decision, but I really enjoyed his portrayal of Rhodey. I was very disappointed when I heard he wasn't coming back. That being said, I really don't see the need to include War Machine in any further films. Do we really need a 2nd Iron Man? I think War Machine more or less under-performed as a plot device and I see no need to re-visit that. Cease and desist War Machine.

Don Cheadle is a great actor but he is not Rhodey. I know Team Knight Rider was a bad show. But the black actor, from that show would be a good choice for Rhodey.

I'm a big iron man fan from way back and I've watched the different tweaks of the War Machine armor. Besides the alien armor this new War Machine armor is hideous. Even a great artist like Olivetti on Iron Man 2.0 cant make this look good.

@JustAnotherFilmGeek - The symbol on War Machine's armor is an Air Force insignia. The patch on skinny Steve's uniform as well as the rest of the Howling Commandos' uniforms is a wing, similar to the one on Cap's helmet. It is their unit patch.

I'd LOVE to see a War Machine spin off. My only problem might be to change Cheadle and throw in Jamie Foxx, not only because Cheadle doesn't look like "a war machine," but Foxx adds some comedy to the role, just like Robert Downey Jr. does with Tony Stark. Great bio, and please.... give us a War Machine spin off and some Avengers action with Jamie Foxx leading the way
