Green Lantern Rumors Examined

So here's the lowdown on what's happening with the Emerald Knight.
Here is the recent rumor roundup:

1. No confirmation yet if Haley is up for the role of Sinestro

2. Sinestro is not the main villain in the GL movie, he is Hal's mentor(much like in the comics) though there are hints of his dark nature. I think him being the big bad will be reserved for the sequels.

3. Superman's cameo might not be in costume. Possible *spoiler* The ring in choosing a new wielder passes by the Daily Planet and hesitates on an eyeglass wearing reporter.

4. Another possible *spoiler* the ring then will encircle several times on Guy Gardner(who we all fans know is another Green Lantern in the comics). A suitable actor is being considered because of a possible bigger part on an upcoming sequel

I really think the ring should encircle john Stewart, instead of Guy. Stewart was the second Lantern, and more widely known, though I'll admit, that it would be cool to see Guy on screen.
supermarioworldE - 10/18/2009, 7:49 PM
no, Stewart was the third lantern, Guy was the second. Guy was chosen as a backup for Hal, but when both Hal and Guy were out of commission John Stewart came in. But I do like John better than Guy.
Reevemat - 10/18/2009, 8:27 PM
@Reevemat, Very true. My mistake. good observation
supermarioworldE - 10/18/2009, 8:29 PM
Daniel Craig! is the only Guy i wanna see.
shibazz - 10/18/2009, 8:30 PM
Still upset about R.Reynolds as GL. Espescially after his DeadPoool turned into a DeadPoop. And he was soooooo into "the Character" if i remember corectly.
shibazz - 10/18/2009, 8:32 PM
Ya know what sucked most about Wade Wilson "DudPool" is that he looked and acted just like Ryan Wilson. Even the hair for Chrissakes! Total R.R.
shibazz - 10/18/2009, 8:34 PM
As long as Deadpool is a reboot. I'll personally destroy fox if ANYTHING from Wolverine sludges it's way into DP
supermarioworldE - 10/18/2009, 8:51 PM
I'd like Sinestro to start out as good, with of course hints to his evil nature, and the end fight of the film would be him versus Hal. I just think it might be a waste to not have him as Hal's enemy in the movie.

Jason Isaacs = Sinestro

I'd like the idea of the ring passing by Gardner, it would be pretty cool IMO.

Jeremy Renner = Guy Gardner

I'd LOVE a Clark Kent (not Superman) cameo. It would go great with the apparent plan WB has to tie all the new films together.

Brandon Routh = Clark Kent/Superman

Regarding Reynolds and Deadpool:

Reynolds NAILED Wade in his screen time as part of Team X. Nailed the personality, humor, action, all of it.

He is not to blame for Barakapool. Actors like him don't have a say in what the studios want. He would have gotten nowhere if he tried to change what happened to Deadpool at the end, all he'd have gotten is trouble with Fox. Plus, from interviews pertaining to the very same subject, it's obvious he didn't like the way they changed the character.

I think he'll be a great Hal Jordan, he's a great actor, and he's got Martin Campbell directing him. 2 wins in my book.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/18/2009, 8:54 PM
This is Guy Gardner:

access - 10/18/2009, 9:39 PM
Man, I can't wait for this movie. Every piece of information I get just drives me nutz.

Anyway, I'm glad Sinestro isn't the main villain in the first movie. I'd like to see his character evolve over a period of 1 or 2 films.
Macksimus - 10/18/2009, 9:46 PM
@Macks: Exactly! Making him the antagonist in the first movie is rushing it.

@Tyler: You think he nailed Wade in Team X?

If I'm not mistaken, Wade wasn't all that funny until after the Hospice's experimentation rattled his brain. As a matter of fact, he was a depressed SOB.

Plus, Wade was never on Team X, ever.

To top if off, Wade didn't have a mutant ability to slice bullets (one of the top three lamest scenes IMO). The whole character was portrayed wrong from start to finish. It wasn't RR fault, it the director and the writers. But it was still crap.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/18/2009, 9:47 PM
is that a steering wheel in your crotch? aye, and it's driving me nuts...
Betty - 10/18/2009, 10:18 PM
It wasn't Wades mutant ability that allowed him to deflect bullets with his sword. It was his Jedi powers. DUH! lol
CPBuff22 - 10/18/2009, 10:19 PM
@CPBuff: Forgive me, I didn't know the Force was strong with that one :/
MultiPurposePoni - 10/18/2009, 11:08 PM
Tyler-
"I'd like Sinestro to start out as good"

I would agree if you mean to fool the general audience. Otherwise, he was bad before he donned the ring.

Bypass Routh as Supes. Part of a franchise that should come to swift and deadly end. No more carry-overs. Time for do-overs.
Phinehas - 10/18/2009, 11:13 PM
The best choice for Guy Gardner, in my opinion.

MovieTheaterLad - 10/18/2009, 11:50 PM
Come on you's mugs... Guy Gardner+ Daniel Craig..... that hair just screams British Jagg-Off!
shibazz - 10/19/2009, 1:59 AM
Well all you lot that laughed at me when i said GUY GARDNER would be in the movie!!

Bwahhahahhahhahahhahhaha!!!!! ; D

Well i wont say i told you so, but again if you knew the Origin you'd know he's an important part of it!!

Daniel Craig , [frick] off lol, no way in hell lmao!!!

BRADLEY COOPER all the way!! ; D

Multi: Reynolds nailed the interpretation we got. They made him like Deadpool after all the sh*t happened to him, and Reynolds nailed it.

The not on Team X thing and the slicing bullets thing don't have anything to do with how Reynolds portrayed the character.

Phinehas: Yes, Sinestro would obviously be bad, but he starts out "good" to fool the audience.

Jeremy Renner = Guy Gardner

InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/19/2009, 4:37 AM
if its between those two? i side with LEE sorry...HUGO WEAVING NEEDS TO BE SINESTRO!
dellamorte1872 - 10/19/2009, 6:37 AM
ryan reynolds is the bomb. he will nail this part just like he did wade wilson and scarjo.
superdog - 10/19/2009, 9:17 AM
.....after leaving Guy Gardner, the ring then encircles an unwitting Snapper Carr...who looks uncannily like Ashton Kutcher. It then moves on to a Bruce Campbellish Eel O'Brien.
BillyBatson - 10/19/2009, 9:33 AM
LMAO... nice
MrDCGuy23 - 10/19/2009, 9:45 AM
I agree w/ movietheaterlad. Jeff Anderson could play Garder's persona very well. Anderson's Randel is really an asshole and Gardner comes across as an asshole sometimes himself.

Shibaz: I agree Reynolds just doesnt seem like a good fit for Green Lantern. Hal Jordan comes off more as an adult serious with some edge. Reynolds is all edge and immature(Deadpool and the character he played in Blade3) maybe he should've been Guy or Kyle but not Hal.
BLADE4040 - 10/19/2009, 11:50 AM
Tyler:

That is one thing that I love with villians. I want more subtlety in film in regard to evil. Because villians in reality always think that they are on the side of God though their deeds are evil. They justify away their actions or philosophy in the name of the greater good. More troubles in life are from peoples' "good intentions". In the same way, I think Sinestro should be portrayed with beliefs that he is the good guy in this war. As opposed to battle cries that ring of, "in the name of doom," or, "in the name of evil". That's just stupid. That's one reason why I think they should change Sinestro's name from an origin name. The corp calls him that nickname which would eventually stick. If he were just evil, it would seem weird on how he could recruit so many supporters to his Sinestro Corp.
Phinehas - 10/19/2009, 11:52 AM
they have to put sinestro in the moive he is kick ass
Marvel Rules - 10/19/2009, 12:04 PM
Wow that is a lot of info
MrAnonymous - 10/19/2009, 1:57 PM
sinestro should be good at the beginning, but slowly turn evil and jealous throughout the whole thing, then they fight at the end.

and am i the only person that thinks guy gardner is a tool shed?
CorndogBurglar - 10/19/2009, 5:22 PM
YES to Tom (Clark Kent/Superman) Welling and NO to Brandon (Christopher Reeves) Routh!
FutureFoe - 10/19/2009, 6:36 PM
NO to Tom (Wooden as a plank) Welling and YES to Brandon (Charismatic) Routh
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/19/2009, 6:43 PM
@Tyler: Don't worry, Tom will never play Supes on the big screen.

I repeat, NEVER.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/19/2009, 7:41 PM
Multi: I know that, and it's for good reason that he won't! ;)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/19/2009, 7:56 PM
Whoa. Tyler, did you just say that Routh is charismatic?! You're kidding right?? What has he been in that he was charismatic? It certainly wasn't SR or his horrifying soap opera episodes.

I am for neither Routh or Welling. I don't want Smallville on the screen because the continuity is screwy. I don't Routh because he's uncharismatic bore that wasn't "misdirected" by Singerman, he just isn't convincing. Name me another movie that Singerman misdirected anyone! You can't. He allows actors to work their crafts. That is why he has many of the same come back to him. SR sucked because of Singer...primarily. But Routh did not convince me the he's a good Superman. Likewise as with Smallville, I don't anymore carry-overs, or continuations of legacy franchises from Donner/Singerman. Brand new! No confusion.
Phinehas - 10/19/2009, 9:34 PM
@ Phinehas - Routh is not as bad as you put him.... I liked him as Superman...
thegreek - 10/19/2009, 10:14 PM
@Phinehas: Singer is a horrible CBM director because he ISN'T a comic fan! Even with Superman he said he fell in love with the original movies and THAT'S why he wanted to do SR. He needs to stay the hell away from CBMs just like Ratner and Schumacher.

As for Routh. . I though he was a decent Supes. If Singer "allows actors to work their crafts", why did he want Routh to imitate Reeve's Superman? Because he wasn't familiar with the source material and Reeve's Supes was all he could base the character on.

Taking up the Superman mantle after Reeve's portrayal was a daunting task, Routh needed better coaching to help make the character his own. But, then again, Singer made SR as a homage to the originals, so he didn't want Routh to get creative with the character.

My personal preference would be a new actor for the Supes role so as not to bring any bad publicity to the character. If not, give Routh another chance with a director that knows his way around the character.

Welling, his alternate Superman world and all those bullsh*t character cameos need to stay on the CW and never be associated with Superman canon. Which, if brought to the silver screen, they would do.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/19/2009, 10:36 PM
Routh was charismatic as Clark in SR. We all know you're undying hatred of anything Superman Returns, so I expected as much from you.

And I totally agree with what Multi said.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/20/2009, 4:33 AM
@ Multi- Well said...
thegreek - 10/20/2009, 8:23 AM
"Routh was charismatic as Clark in SR."

Well I'm sold. LOL Ummm...no.
Don't you guys remember him saying "but I'm Superman. But I'm superman!" Like a little girl when Luthor's goons were kicking him on the kryptonite island? Come on!! Its like you guys willfully ignore everything bad.

Phinehas - 10/20/2009, 1:58 PM
Routh did exactly what was asked of him in Superman Returns. He delivered a pretty good impression of Chris Reeves. You can't blame him for not making the character his own when he wasn't allowed to do that.

If you don't want to buy that, look at Spacey's Luthor. Spacey is well known for making any character he touches absolutely his own and yet he was doing a direct Hackman impression. The story is all in the directing and editing.
fuqua - 10/20/2009, 2:29 PM
As for Sinestro, I'd have him wear the ring on his left hand and have someone make a comment about "Sinester" meaning "left" originally. Let's face it, 90% of the people who will go to see this movie will already know he's going to eventually be evil. I really don't see a need to change his name.

How it came to mean deceptively evil was in the middle ages when people would show their sword/right hand (salute) showing it to be empty while hiding a dagger in their left. So left handed people gained a rep for being assassins.
fuqua - 10/20/2009, 2:33 PM
@Phinehas: When did Routh say "but I'm superman. But I'm superman" in Superman Returns?

I'd like to know if you're being serious or if you're just trying to make a point.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/20/2009, 4:05 PM
And it also is like you willfully ignore everything good about SR Phinehas.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/20/2009, 4:27 PM
Well see, there ya go, Tyler. How do you determine when to drink a glass of water with just a drop of poo in it? Does it make the whole glass of water bad? YES! SR's good qualities are summed up in a few visual effects. That's it!

MPP-
I told you already. When he first landed on the kryptonite island, Luthor kicks him to the ground and the goons proceed to kick him. He cries out...

@ 2:30

BTW, his voice is nasally and lacks command. Even, by some standards, Reeve was too effeminate for some, but at least his voice had some command to it. Not Routh's.
Phinehas - 10/21/2009, 4:41 PM
@Phin: Ok, I just watched that four times. How do you make out "But I'm Superman, but I'm Superman" from that mumble?

If you use that "drop of poo" mentality, you would have to say that 95% of the CBMs that have come out are as bad as you think SR is.

Do you remember 'Throwing the S'?
MultiPurposePoni - 10/21/2009, 10:07 PM
Yes, Richard Lester's version of Supes II was bad. I do remember the "thrown S". I like the Donner Cut much much more.

Ok, MPP. You got me! Bad example. Allow me to rephrase by saying that there is so little that is good about SR and a monumental load of steamy poo that is bad, just right next to a small glass of (the good)clean water. LOL

Ok, he didn't repeat it. He said it once. I must have been echoing in my head. But didn't sound like a girlish whine to you? Come on!?!?

Phinehas - 10/22/2009, 1:18 AM
@multi

Your assessment is spot on, and I'll go one further.

Singer is not just a horrifying CBM director, he's a rip-off artist. In his feeble attempt to emulate the Donner films, he literally copied the premise of the entire first movie, almost scene to scene. Another Lex Luthor land-grab. Luthor steals the Kryptonite, sticks it in Superman (as opposed to around him), dumps him to drown in water, and in an attempt to make his own little island paradise, nearly destroys a part of America only to be thwarted my Superman...again if were to believe these movies connected somehow to the first two. Even some of the gags were the same, like him getting stuck in the revolving door. I was sickened by the film, despite the effects. I was really hoping for better.

I found this list of similarities online:

1. Lex Luthor's plot to get rich(er) from land, whilst killing millions and billions of people in the process.

2. Lex and Kitty Kowalski's (and Eve Teschmacher in 1978) dialog about what his father used to tell him. And her later showing of emotion at a crucial time.

3. After saving an aircraft with Lois on board, Superman says: "I hope this doesn't put any of you off flying. Statistically speaking, it's still the safest way to travel." And, as in the first movie, Lois faints after Superman flies away.

4. Superman stops Lois from lighting a cigarette on a balcony before he takes her on a night-flight.

5. Clark Kent bumps into Lois, her purse falls to the floor, things fall out, and he helps her pick them up.

6. Clark and Lois and a revolving door.

7. Clark says "Swell."

8. Young Superman running in a cornfield and throwing a ball to the horizon.

9. Superman's spacecraft and its skid marks on the ground.

10. Line about a news story concerning a massacre.

11. The piece of meteorite from Krypton found in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

12. Lex's wig collection.

13. John Williams' theme returns for the new film.

14. The title graphics, while not the same, are designed in a similar style to the original.

15. Marlon Brando plays Jor-El.

16. Kitty and Ms. Teschmacher are both involved in a car accident, both designed by Lex Luthor as a distraction so that Luthor himself can steal a missile in the first film and a piece of Kryptonite in Superman Returns.

17. Lois's newspaper article 'I spent the night with Superman' is referenced.

18. Superman nearly drowns in both films, due to Lex.

19. In the first film Clark Kent has trouble hailing a taxi until Lois whistles one down. In this movie, it is Clark who whistles down the cab after Lois has trouble hailing one.

20. Superman is shot in the chest with a machine gun on a rooftop in both movies.

Singer should be sued by the Donners. I understand he is attempting to establish some form of continuity between the older movies and SR by using similar dialogue as the first movie, some of the same sight gags and even Glenn Ford (the original Jonathan Kent) appearing in a photo on the mantle of the Kent home, but to simply copy the entire basis of the film to me just squashes continuity, as I simply can not believe Luthor is stupid enough to try the same crap twice, and Superman is too stupid to realize it.

As for Routh, I think he's a good actor, but I don't think he's a good Superman. Let them find another unknown with good acting chops to make the character his as Reeves did. I'm a huge fan of what Christopher Reeves did for the movies, but I'm open to another actor taking the reigns, but not Routh. He simply has zero charisma, and being tall and similar in looks to Reeves doesn't cut it for me. I'm taking into consideration the fact that Singer probably kept his acting wings from stretching a bit, but I still don't want to see him in the fetish suit again. Give it to someone else. I simply didn't believe he could fly.

I hated this f***ing movie, and Singer is an oxygen thief who is stealing my air.
gtrman - 10/22/2009, 3:10 AM
And I apologize for going off topic. I know this is a GL article. No offense intended Access.
gtrman - 10/22/2009, 3:11 AM
@gtrman: There you go :) I, personally, didn't dislike Routh for following Singer's orders. All he did was imitate Reeve's Superman just like Spacey tried to imitate Hackman's Luthor. When it comes to acting imitation isn't a form of flattery, it's just boring to watch. Singer took the easy way out. Instead of having the balls to make the film his own, he piggybacked Donner. What a lazy ass.

They should just play it safe and recast the whole bunch.

@Phin: Sorry, bro, I still didn't hear it. I heard him trying to yet with his mouth covered, but I didn't hear anything coherent.
