Silver Surfer Spin-off is Dead According to J. Michael Straczynski

It seems that there'll be no surfing for the Sentinel of the Spaceways.
Travelling back a few years ago, when the news of the Fantastic Four sequel movie was as hot as Human Torch, Fox was whipping up a planned spin-off from the Fantastic Four new co-star - The Silver Surfer! Who better to bring the spacefaring superhero on screen other than the one who has done space operas before in Babylon 5, and a comic scribe as well - J. Michael Straczynski.

So in an interview with Collider here is what Straczynski has to say about the current state of things on the Surfer movie.

"What happened was when FF2 didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a Silver Surfer movie," Straczynski said. "The script that I wrote picked up right where FF2 left off. So if they do a Silver Surfer film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate [thing]."

Asked about the tone of the film, if it's the same as the light tone of the FF adventure, this is what he has to say.

"It was definitely adult fare. I wanted to tell the origin of the Surfer and get into that whole thing," he said.

So there you have it folks no Shining "Oscar-like" statuette surfing the sky's in our near future. Though there are talks thatFox is rebooting the 'Fantastic Four'.

Honestly, it's really difficult to get excited about a Fox movie.

silver surfer was the only good thing about the movie he needs his own
thedarkknight666 - 11/23/2009, 5:37 PM
I LIKE A SILVER SURFER MOVIE.
OSCURO - 11/23/2009, 6:21 PM
How would he know???!!

Trust me FOX will do SILVER SURFER!! ; D
LEEE777 - 11/23/2009, 7:15 PM
@LEE- I disagree i think this movie has been dead for a while. They know people hated FF@ and although the Silver Surfer was the coolest thing in the movie, that wont be enough to bring people in.

I hope im wrong but thats what its looking like.
BatmanKnight - 11/23/2009, 7:18 PM
Fox really f**ked Fantastic Four over, in doing so they f**ked Galactus, and Silver Surfer too. They could have had good momentum to move forward with Surfer, but because of a punk director and weak script they now have shit. Fox should just hand the rights over to Marvel and give up already. How many more superheroes and villains are going to become casualties of really piss poor film making?????
ASSASSIN666 - 11/23/2009, 7:23 PM
If they managed to geenlight a Deadpool film despite Wolverine, I am not too worried about Silver Surfer.
MovieTheaterLad - 11/23/2009, 8:42 PM
BATS @ You can disagree all you want dude lol, SILVER SURFER will be green lit as soon as GREEN LANTERN is out!!

No brainer lol! ; D
LEEE777 - 11/23/2009, 8:55 PM
BUY IT ALL BACK MARVEL/Disney!!!

I'd rather wait and see the character's done right by Marvel than watch another dreadful wave of utter schlock from Fox.
nerosday - 11/23/2009, 9:36 PM
No more fux-up by Fox!

Marvel movies? We don't need their stinking
Marvel Movies!

Please MARVEL/DISNEY buy back all your
properties so they get made right!

Come on Disney! You got the bucks!
No more Marvel movies for FOX to FUX!

...I wax a little poetic! :D :D :D
DDD - 11/24/2009, 1:28 AM
Lol, you lot loved BORIGINS, Fox or not, SILVER SURFER will be a [frick]ing amazing movie!!
LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 1:49 AM
doesn't sound to me at all like he said it's dead
IronClad - 11/24/2009, 3:01 AM
maybe his version's dead...
IronClad - 11/24/2009, 3:02 AM
i would love to see a silver surfer film. and they need to get a namore film going and a inhuman these three films could be great.
1chris2 - 11/24/2009, 3:24 AM
I doubted the movie would get made from the start, and I pretty much knew it was stuck in hell because we've gotten seriously no news about it since the release of Fantastic Turd: Rise of The Silver Surfer.

They would have f*cked it up just like the first 2 turds of Fantastic Four movies.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/24/2009, 4:24 AM
i don't really care about this. Fox would be making it, and they mess up everything. galactus...lmao
CorndogBurglar - 11/24/2009, 6:22 AM
TYLER @ Only TURD cbm we would ever get is Ackles being CAP mate!! That would be the biggest TURD!!

The FF movies weren't bad, theres a [frick]ing lot worst out there! ; D
LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 6:48 AM
I like how people just tell fox to give the rights back to marvel. Yeah that's what's there gonna do, give up the rights to potential multimillion dollar franchises because the fan boys think there movies suck. And Disney will not buy them back cause they don't need to right now. They have enough stuff going on already with iron man avengers etc......they wouldn't make a silver surfer movie for years anyway so why not just wait for the rights to revert back and not have to pay a dime. It's called business boys.
superdog - 11/24/2009, 6:52 AM
Echoing what most seem to think - as long as Fox have control over these properties, it's difficult to get excited.

They've proven over and over again that despite X-Men 1&2's success (now looking more and more like a fortuitous accident), they really have no clue how to handle these properties.

I hope they argue and hand-wring about these properties until they just give up and they revert back to Marvel (or Marvel takes the initiative and buys these properties back).

Even if Fox did have a clue (never going to happen as long as morons like Rothman are in charge), I still, as do we all I assume, want the FF and SS to be a part of the greater filmic Marvel Universe, so however it's going to be, as long as they're not part of the greater whole, they will suffer for it (as will we, the fans).

Even if Marvel/Disney can't get the characters back, lock and stock, they should try to make a deal with Fox and Sony to make these movies themselves but distribute them with Sony and/or Fox. That way the greedy corporate ghouls at those companies still get their (undeserved) cut of the pie, but we might actually get movies we give a damn about...
KeithM - 11/24/2009, 6:52 AM
I've been wondering what happened to the proposed Silver Surfer flick. I loved Straczynski's Silver Surfer miniseries he did a few years back and was looking foward to seeing were his take on the movie.
longbowhunter - 11/24/2009, 7:01 AM
thedarkknight666- FOREVER KNIGHT IS THE BEST EVER CLASSIC CANADIAN VAMPIRE SHOW EVER!!! Could also be because it was the ONLY one but still a monument IMO ;)
Shaman - 11/24/2009, 7:01 AM
@ LEEE777... stop and think about this mate. Do you want the same bunch of pencil pushing bean counting stuffed shirts that loused up EPIC characters like Galactus and Dr Doom handling a SS solo movie??

I think what your trying to tell us is that a SS movie is a great IDEA, and could be wonderful and I agree with that.
IF someone else was doing it. But they aren't. Superdog's right... they will never let the property go so basically the Silver Surfer movie being dead is a good thing. I would rather it be dead than mishandled.

I agree with Corndog, DDD, Tyler, and Assasin. To hell with the whole thing.
DarthMulder - 11/24/2009, 7:15 AM
thank god!
InFamouslyCool - 11/24/2009, 8:01 AM
The only thing that made me interested in this was Straczynski writing it.
Michael Galusick - 11/24/2009, 8:14 AM
@lee
what the hell cbm was worse than FF2??? that movie was like a saturday morning tv special 4 five year olds...that was the worst peice of garbage ever...wolverine looked like gold compared 2 that horsesh!t..
I cant believe ppl can even say that movie was ok...if u can except that kinda movie as a ok cbm...than u r the ppl putting our heros in fox's hands!!!!!
oh and by the way LEE..i looked up ur cap pick Lewis...the dude is from sex and the city y'all...so im guessing mr lee watches that sh!t 2...maybe has a lil man crush on the dude...if u can stomach that show..than its no surprise u liked FF!!!

XmutantX - 11/24/2009, 8:42 AM
i also like how people call the studios greedy pencil pushers who only care about profit. THERE A FRIGEN MOVIE STUDIO, THEY ALL CARE ABOUT PROFIT!!!!! everyone wants disney to buy them back, yeah cause disney has NEVER been about profit. its all about the art right? studios, ALL studios, including marvel, are in this to make money, period. if they didnt think they could make money they wouldnt make the movies at all. and apparently thats ok with some of you. fine. but dont blame it on corporate greed and pretend that any other studio is more concerned about content than profit, cause your wrong.
superdog - 11/24/2009, 8:53 AM
@superdog
ur kinda staiting the obvious here...but being a lil 1 sided...marvel is out 2 make money yea...but they would put out betta movies cus its their characters...the other studios alwayz seem 2 want 2 put their on spin on a character..or how they want 2 portray our heros and villians...but marvel would stay very close 2 the sorce material...i think iron man proved that!
~X
XmutantX - 11/24/2009, 9:08 AM
SupDawg- But there is always the argument that these money grubbing studios are adapting time tested and true "content" that has generated enough profit for them to ever be interested in it's adaptation. If they only had made a Wolverine film to generate profit, wouldn't it be logical to think that the "content" which had already generated massive profits in the past would generate even more profits in a correct adaptation? How could someone actually think that disrespecting a profitable content could ever generate "MORE" profit than an accurate adaptation??? It makes no sense.
Shaman - 11/24/2009, 9:13 AM
JMS would have a best amazing script...i bet my life on it...so fox discards this to keep making shit...wow...a silver surfer with galactus would have been sweeettt
Anil Rickly - 11/24/2009, 9:15 AM
STOP REBOOTING FILMS THAT ARE NOT THAT OLD..I can understand remaking a film from the 70s, 80s maybe but this is getting ridiculous. I hear they are remaking Robocop, why!? What the hell is wrong with the original. Its like destroying a classic painting. Granted it will be cool to see Robocop on the big screen again but all these reboots are getting out of hand. Let about ten years pass before you even begin thinking about rebooting the FF franchise, that way the turd the was the second film is some what out of our minds. In the meantime make a really good Silver Surfer movie and keep FOX away from it. Why!? Marvel should handle it.
ATOMbomb - 11/24/2009, 9:17 AM
LEE: The fact you like the FF films pretty much confirms you have ZERO taste! (That and wanting an Australian to play Captain America of course)

The FF movies were awful - the second was a little better until they made the pathetic version of Doom even worse by taking away his scars, cloud Galactus and dancing Reed!

A Silver Surfer movie written by JMS would have been excellent (for anyone who hasnt seen Changeling, check it out - its brilliantly written by JMS and a great movie) However, in Fox's hands it still wouldve probably ended up being crap like every other CBM they've made!
JoshW - 11/24/2009, 10:06 AM
It might help us all to remember that there is a younger audience also who will develop into ourselves at some point...but that crowd needs pg and pg13 ratings...economically it also drives parents, who wouldn't purchase tickets otherwise, to fill seats while attending with youngsters...not everything should be dark and brooding...and the ff4 are the most family oriented and family friendly marvel property...just business
Saemus13 - 11/24/2009, 10:20 AM
No matter what if FOX is involed it will SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK ASS to the Most infinit power! as much as I want to see a surfer movie. I'd rather wait for marvel to get the rights back.

@superdog I work for a major gaming studio that only focuses on profit. Yet they only tend to make just a little bit of profit each year. Studios that focus on delivering "an entertaining quality experience" are SIGNIFICANTLY more profitable. Look at Gears of war, Modern Warfare 2 or the Ironman movie, or dark knight.

Yes the end result is to make money but the problem is the execs should stay out of the creative process. Their brains are completely incapable of understanding people or art/entertainment. That’s why we keep getting Shit Movies, Shit Video Games and Shit Music.

Some time in the 80s a bunch of small cock douche bag math kids with no talent what so ever saw the entertainment industry as a way to make tones of money and get fame and hot chicks. The problem is that someone forgot to tell them that they have no business in this industry. As a result of being one dimensional thinkers and spreadsheet gurus they all but completely drained the world of anything that can be called art.

The suits have no vision… No right brain, Creative thinking does not compute. They are doomed to a rotten death when math cannot solve all of the problems; they are a species that cannot adapt. I cannot wait tell the entertainment industry has a rescission caused by no talent shit bag ways of thinking. Then true artist will have room to flourish ;) and show the shit bags how to really make some $$$$

thatiscrazy - 11/24/2009, 10:26 AM
I think I missed the comment where someone blamed bad CBMs on corporate greed. I haven't read any here that said that. How strange.

Some studios make good CBMs. Others don't.

There is nothing wrong with trying to make the fans happy. Obviously that would bring more $$

Quick example (one out of hundreds) I saw Iron Man 6 times. Everyone I know saw it at least one time, and many saw it at least twice, and a lot of that was because I told them it was a must see. Critics, fans, and casual viewers alike thought it was great.

But I only saw FF2 one time. No one else I knew saw it, and anytime someone asked me about it I told them it was stupid. Critics didn't like it. Fans said it was a shoddy adaption.

So the end result:
Now the Iron Man franshise has massive clout in terms of popularity. People are screaming for the teaser and the trailer. The online buzz is crazy huge, and everybody just can't wait for IM2 & IM3 and Avengers. Everyone knows those movies will be smash hits. The numbers will be astounding and the fans will be well appeased.

And then there's FF2. People basically regard it as trash. It made some fairly decent money but no one wants an FF3 at all, and the only word from Hollywood is some words muttered here and there about a reboot.

So which one is more valuable to the concern that owns it? And why?
DarthMulder - 11/24/2009, 10:31 AM
Good, I don't want Fox to do SS.

Macksimus - 11/24/2009, 10:34 AM
@Saemus13
almost every marvel cbm is pg13...
XmutantX - 11/24/2009, 10:47 AM
this is the best thing to happen to a silver surfer movie, because if fox waits too long it will go to marvel. hopefully that can happen with x-men to, i only wish.
deadpool21 - 11/24/2009, 10:52 AM
FF2 jus sucked!...even the score was corny...it reminded me of ninja turtles 3...jus really cheesy...only good thing about that movie is the silver surfer looked cool...thats it...but fox ruined any chance of a solo ss film...
it isnt the rating that made the movie bad...we all loved the TMNT animated movie...so dont use the "concerned parent" B.S.
Jesus I still cant believe ppl r defending this peice of sh!t..what the f**k is wronge with you?????
XmutantX - 11/24/2009, 10:53 AM

Anil Rickly - 11/24/2009, 1:21 PM
Look...all I was saying is that as kids we all wanted to see our fav heroes do battle on screen...some entities aren't aimed at 17 - 29 year old males..FF is one of those entities on film...I agree they shouldve left a complicated surfer character alone, but come on...how else do you expose a younger fan base to characters they can become interested in and grow with...it's just style....the 4 wouldn't make sense dark and constantly antagonized like the other properties you guys are comparing it to...on a serious note, a quirky director like Burton would handle a FF movie well and be able to sell it to multiple demographics
Saemus13 - 11/24/2009, 1:24 PM
Saemus13: To be honest, I'd hate to see an FF movie directed by Burton - they just need to make the next movie less of a kids film, theres no need to make it dark. The first two were so childish and immature I'm suprised that they werent full of fart jokes! :P
JoshW - 11/24/2009, 1:41 PM
Oh.....and baby arm
Saemus13 - 11/24/2009, 1:42 PM
Burton would have had the balls to show the real Galactus, i'll tell ya that! All he'd need is a great script like Strazinsky's.
Shaman - 11/24/2009, 1:42 PM
Shamman I'm not sure I agree with you, take a look at the sketches of Burton's Brainiac and you would realize that Burton likes his science fiction characters with a goofy fifties looks. Another example would be Mars Attacks.
Verdugo - 11/24/2009, 1:55 PM
Burton had the same type of goofy storyboards for batman....that turned out ok I think
Saemus13 - 11/24/2009, 2:13 PM
Oh.....and lobster claw
Saemus13 - 11/24/2009, 2:15 PM
a silver surfer movie would be boring as all hell unless in the right hands philosophical mumbo jumbo=LAME
RomeyRome2002 - 11/24/2009, 2:25 PM
A SILVER SURFER MOVIE WOULD BE EPIC IN THE RIGHT HANDS.
OSCURO - 11/24/2009, 2:39 PM
But it isn't in the right hands. These are the guys that made FF1, FF2, X3, Ghost Rider, etc.

I'll stop there, those movies in the same sentence causes me great pain...
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/24/2009, 2:45 PM
Well, it's all Tim Story's fault. He's an awful director. He took F4 in a bad direction. I don't know why they picked him. Nor do I know why they picked Mark Steven Johnson to direct NOT ONLY Daredevil (unsuccessful), but also Ghost Rider (which was much worse). But F4 was much worse than those. Now, they are spending more money on the reboot of F4 when they could have just handled the first movies the way they should have.
TheBat - 11/24/2009, 2:51 PM
Burton would make an epic dr. strange film.....
Saemus13 - 11/24/2009, 2:51 PM
@ xmutantx

ghost rider was worse than ff2
CorndogBurglar - 11/24/2009, 4:01 PM
@ shaman

studios don't make accurate representations for the most part, because A) they don't know any better, and B) they thing that by changing things it will be more marketable to a wider audience.

that might not be true, but i think what superdog is saying is that companies like Fox aren't making inaccurate adaptations to piss people off. they genuinely think that the decisions they're making are for the best. they would be wrong, but to say that these movies suck because of "pencil pushing, greedy corporations" is just an allusion. because ALL companies are out to make money. what is marvel?? its a corporation out to make money, first and foremost. anyone that thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

if people want to say that these companies like Fox don't have faith in the source material to pull in a lot of money, then that would be one thing. and that would be a true statement.
CorndogBurglar - 11/24/2009, 4:08 PM
That kinda qualifies them as full fleged retards though, CDB LOL :P

Verdugo- Yeah, you do have a point...

Saemus13- Dr. Dtrange... NOW you're talkin!!!
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 7:02 AM
@ shaman

lol, yeah it does. they're taking something that already has a huge following and has proven successful, and changing it. thats kind of taking an unnecessary risk. but thats what happens when you have non-comic fans making comic movies, lol.
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 9:08 AM
@Shaman:

"Burton would have had the balls to show the real Galactus, i'll tell ya that! All he'd need is a great script like Strazinsky's"

This.

Man... your a dude after my own heart. Im not trying to diss anyone that thinks the real Galactus "wouldn't translate well" or whatever but this right here is how I look at that whole issue.

I truly truly belive that there IS a way it could have been done without it being cheesy or stupid and without making it cosmic cockroaches like in the Ultimates.

In my book, taking that one risk would have moved that movie from the "movies I hate" stack to the "movies that are flawed but still cool" stack. I would have forgiven the writers and the director for all their long list of foibles just on the strength of that one thing. BUT NO. A little vision is just way too much to ask for it seems
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 9:31 AM
Too true my friends, too true!
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 11:11 AM
silver surfer should be redone anyway, with as little cgi as possible
