Ror Reviews: X-Men: First Class

Was the praise heaped on Matthew Vaughn's mutant prequel justified? Or have we all just been starved for a solid X flick for too long? Click for my take...

"Fist Ass!". "This will be the worst CBM ever made!" "[frick] Fox, bullshit, arghhhhh!" Etc etc.(just check out some of the comments in this Editorial :) Now of course, the benefit of hindsight is great thing. But my problem with these type of comments from these type of people has always, and will always be that they simply refuse to give some things a chance. First Class was a Fox X-men movie, it bastardized the "real" comics First Class team and came up with it's own version of the origin of the team. And that was all some people needed to write it off as a bad movie. Well, many others recognized that this "travesty" also had a great director, a great cast, and a pretty good team of writers. Guess who turned out to be right?

Straight up, X-Men: First Class is a great movie. Great adaptation? No, because it isn't really an adaptation at all. It's a movie based on the characters featured in Marvel's X-Men comics. On the surface, that might piss many people off. But look a little deeper and you will see that these characters are done justice to. They may not have used the ones you wanted em to, Hell they didn't use the ones I wanted them to! But that doesn't mean that they didn't do a great job of bringing them to life in this particular story. And of course that story is fundamentally Charles Xavier and Erik Lennsher's friendship, it's destruction and their journey towards becoming Professor X and Magneto. I'm afraid that aside from Mystique and maybe Beast, the other X-Men are basically just there to help out with the action sequences. This is pretty much the McAvoy/Fassbender show, and it's all the better for it.

By not trying to spread the focus too much to every character Matthew Vaughn has allowed these two excellent actors to deliver what imo are the best interpretations of any comic book characters we have seen on screen. Bar none. Their individual journeys, friendship and eventual parting of ways is all utterly convincing and at times even moving. This type of emotional complexity is something that many CBMs fail to communicate, or in many cases don't even bother attempting to. But the really great thing about this is that as well as all of that "talky" stuff, Vaughn also manages to make a damn fun flick too. It's serious at times, but it never takes itself TOO seriously either. There are quiet a few laugh out loud, borderline cheesy moments that work pretty well. I'm sure you all know about a cameo from a certain cigar smoking Canuck. Even though I knew what was coming I still laughed my ass off. And he's not the only actor from the previous movies to make an appearance! But McAvoy and Fassbender's are not the only great performances on display. Even though a few of the characters may get the short end of the stick development wise, the actors still do the very best with what they have to work with. Jennifer Lawrence shines as the younger, more innocent Mystique. Nicholas Hoult also does very well as Hank McCoy(although when he becomes Beast..emm, not really sure about the look). Kevin Bacon makes a great villain too, evil and threatening without ever descending into camp. You know the rest of the cast, you know who they play. They all do fine, except for January Jones and Rose Byrne. Byrne is ok, she over acts a little(check out some of her early reactions at seeing Mutants for the first time) but never really makes an impact, Jones is flat out bad imo. Never convincing in any way shape(lovely though it is) or form.

Vaughn keeps things moving at quite a pace, and even though the movie clocks in at over 2 and a half hours you won't feel it. Now personally I thought that things moved along a little TOO briskly. Some earlier scenes in particular might have benefited from being left to resonate more. Remember that opening scene from Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds? Well there is a scene with Erik tracking down some Nazis that is reminiscent of that, the setting, the lighting, the menace bubbling below the surface. It's a great scene, but had it been a tad longer I think it would have been even more effective. Vaughn also delivers too many extreme close up reaction shots for my liking and is overly fond of the camera zoom. But really, I'm nit picking now. Vaughn also gives us some spectacular action scenes, and if you think you have seen it all in the numerous clips and tv spots, you haven't! The special effects are for the most part awesome, But there are a couple of iffy shots, both involving Beast. Trust me though, you really won't care!

Does X-Men: First Class deserve the praise being heaped upon it? I would say so. It's certainly not without it's problems but I would say it's comfortably up there with the best CBMs we have seen. It may even surpass a few but I'll have to clarify that with a second viewing. Believe it folks, Vaughn, and yes, FOX, delivered big time.

PS: Sorry for this very late addition to the review but I totally forgot to mention something else that bothered me about the movie a bit. For about the last 20 minutes or so Michael Fassbender 's accent switched very noticeably to his natural Irish one. It's pretty bizarre! He spends the majority of the movie with a slight English twang and then all of a sudden just sounds like me! I'm not sure if it was something to do with the rushed production and they didn't have time for re-shoots or it was never noticed(although I find that hard to believe), either way it's strange. Doesn't take you completely out of the movie, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway.

whoa123 - 5/31/2011, 10:02 PM
Nice! This and Green Lantern will be the CBM of the year. I gotta ask though, who performed better, McAvoy or Fassbender?
ComradeGrey - 5/31/2011, 10:03 PM
Part of what makes characters great though, and especially in a series like X-Men with so many strong protagonist histories, is the unique ways they interact within different team configurations. I say as long as we're not juggling too many movie characters (i.e. some people have to die) bring in as many of the comic book mutants as possible while maintaining the spirit of their character and their world.
TrollHunter - 5/31/2011, 10:03 PM
I hope we've all learned something from this movie. Don't tear a movie to shreds before you've even seen it. Have faith. We all love comics and movies so there's no reason to be so damn cynical like a lot of fanboys are. Yes we can be skeptical, but don't be an outright dick to a movie that you've never even seen. As fanboys we should be giving these movies the benefit of the doubt.

@ROR

Great review I can't wait to see it now.

I will admit i was a detractor at first when i readwhat they would be doing with the roster of characters and all, but if it holds up well with a good story and charaters, and most iportantly action scenes, then I'm all for it. the next Cheap Tuesday will be awesome!!!!!!
pitchblack - 5/31/2011, 10:49 PM
Interesting (and good) review.

@synisterurge

I'd have to disagree with what you're trying to say. From what I've gathered on this site, there was plenty of premature and frankly idiotic backlash from Marvel fanboys about this film. I think Marvel fans tend to hate Fox more than any one else.

From early reviews it definitely seems like Thor is more flawed than First Class, too. Most of the Thor reviews (not talking about Marvel fanboy reviews here) seem to say it's very good but not great.
DEATHbyEXILE - 5/31/2011, 10:54 PM
Who coined the phrase Fist Ass?
continuezero - 5/31/2011, 10:59 PM
@CovertAvenger...Wasn't it Lee?

@Ror..."Matthew Vaughn has allowed these two excellent actors to deliver what imo are the best interpretations of any comic book characters we have seen on screen. Bar none."....Wow thats a pretty big statement. I thought it'd be good but not that good. Good review...

@Ror: without being spoilerific, does Magneto's classic outfit get a good amount of screen time? (Red suit and red helmet)

Nice article Brother.

I'm unhappy about all of it being a Mystique & Beast show. I wanted a little more of tension between every character. Oh well, it's the best X-Men movie well see so far.
DarrkEvil - 5/31/2011, 11:25 PM
Were there any after credits scene? @Ror
BatmanDTW - 5/31/2011, 11:29 PM
@pitchblack: that's because thor was terribly rushed just to make an avengers movie before DC tries to make a justice league movie. haha.
OnLeatherWings - 5/31/2011, 11:30 PM
Had my doubts at first but the past couple weeks have changed my views on it. not super stoked to see it but i still want to...besides my gf is a huge x-man fan so i dont got a choice lol. but seriously i knew this would be good to great. haters gona hate and fan boys will be fan boys. id just like to know where all the haters are defending their worthless opinions on this movie?

I'm happy to hear your thoughts on Mystique.

I really can't wait for this movie. I hate be one of the fans that boasts (with nothing to base it on), but what the hell . . . "Best CBM of the yeeeaaarrrr!!!"
YeaOkYea - 5/31/2011, 11:35 PM
A week ago I was SOOO excited & counting down the days for this film but these past few days I've grown uninterested in seeing it. After reading how things could've been panned out if Singer would've stayed on to direct X3 & use the Hellfire Club as the villains made me mad that FOX didn't wait for Singer to direct this. I mean Singer said it himself that X3 was going to lead & be filmed simultaneously w/ X4. So off course it was gonna have the Phoenix saga & most likely it would've had Cyclops still alive. Then Vaughn came out & said his version of X3 would've been 40mins longer & been different. Now I read that Sebastian Shaw was working with the Nazi's during WW2 experimenting on mutants so Erik wants revenge. Wait! This sounds too familiar. Mister Sinister was THE one who experimented on mutants during WW2 not Shaw *face palm* AND how can the Hellfire Club be introduced w/o the Phoenix story & vice versa??? **DOUBLE face palm**
Joe6Pack74 - 5/31/2011, 11:36 PM
Can't wait to see it.
patriautism - 5/31/2011, 11:37 PM
Just a few more days! Glad to hear it is good.
LoudLon - 5/31/2011, 11:37 PM
Good review.

I never bad-mouthed this flick, but I also never had high expectations for it. But I don't mind being proven wrong if it's for the better, which seems to be the case.
LoudLon - 5/31/2011, 11:50 PM
Personally, I've had my fill of Wolverine. There are dozens of X-Men characters that are just as deserving of their own films. I'd like to see some of them instead.
Pygmalion - 6/1/2011, 12:01 AM
Thank you Ror! I thought this movie would be good despite it being Fox and 'bastardizing' the original story from the books. I grew up on X-Men in the early 90's with awesome stories and have been very sad overall at their treatment on the big screen. That being said, I still thought from the first trailer that this would be worth seeing because of Xavier and Magneto. Really, the best stories always revolved around them (Fatal Attractions and Age of Apocalypse to name two...). Can't wait to see it!
Pygmalion - 6/1/2011, 12:02 AM
OMG - Did Grif say something nice??? lol.
SKGannbit - 6/1/2011, 12:03 AM
you have also stated that X2 was one of the best CBM's of all time so i won't put much stock into your review.

boycott

I am with you LoudLon.

I'm glad Ror said it.

The X-Men movies are not direct adaptations "staying true to the comics." You can't with X-Men. There's just too many side plots, characters, and goings on to pin anything solid down without messing something up. Look at Origins. People moan on how Deadpool got F-d up bad, etc, so on and so forth. When you're focusing on a team and concept as big as the X-Men, things are bound to messed up for the sake of movie making.

X-Men's not like Thor, Batman, or Spider-Man (all solos for the most part). And it's not like Avengers where you can introduce each character one at a time in off-shoot films before the big team up.

Also, I've been wondering why they just didn't reboot X-Men. But now I know why. People love the X-Men films. I've heard many people (outside the fanboy community) that loved Origins to pieces. Although the continuity is pretty fogged up, X-Men: First Class recognizes the movie fans and refuses to break ties with the Xavier and Magneto everyone knows from X1 and X2 at least. It's a smart halfway reboot that is unique.

I'm the first to admit I was never sold on this film for many reasons. But I've never missed an X-Men opening weekend, I'd hate to break that tradition on what might be the best X-Men film yet, if not at least the best since X2. For better or worse, I'm going to see this film.
CherryBomb - 6/1/2011, 1:21 AM

Awesome review! (:
and Beast looks exactly like in the comics! :D

SuperSomething616 - 6/1/2011, 1:35 AM
One thing I would like to know...if xavier gets put in his wheel chair at the end of this film...how does this fit in with X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

In XOW xavier is still walking at the end (time period was the 80's) when he met Scott Summers aka Cyclops...so as this is set in the 60's I ask again...how is this going to work?
CherryBomb - 6/1/2011, 1:44 AM

Ohh and @Ror? - is there the telepathic battle scene with Prof X & Emma like January Jones said in an interview a while back? - I haven't heard anything about it since :/
ThomYorke - 6/1/2011, 3:12 AM
Going to see it today. Can't wait
Hellsing - 6/1/2011, 3:36 AM
its a very good film just like Thor but its isn't great not the way people are making it out to be. Definitely in upper tier of CBM's. It felt like to me after being ballsy about taking it right back to the past developing a very interesting relationship between mystique and xavier they were in a rush to end it all. Same thing with Magneto and Xaviers friendship if your willing enough to centre the movie around them how about seeing this friendship a bit more. For some one who doesn't care about the previous movies Vaughn was sure in a rush to make things line up. It would have been great if we saw the friendship begin to fracture this movie and completely being destroyed in the 2nd one and same goes for mystique.

But having said that its still good and it is quite sucker punch, even though you know its coming. But if there willing start afresh then and what not why not take your time in totally destroying the relationship. Definitely one of the most emotionally engaging CBM's in a while. Like I said very good but like thor it isn't great, felt like to me they rushed the ending because the realised they had to tie things up. Its a small gripe I know, and Although Beast was a real Beast his look was so inconsistent some angles he looks pretty good but in others not so much they need to fix that IF a sequel happens. But people should definitely give it a shot
Growler - 6/1/2011, 3:36 AM
I'm liking the good reviews so I'm looking forward to seeing this tonight.
Oh yes indeeedy!
