Spider-Man 4 Delay Rumors Are The Real Deal

Contrary to previous reports, It seems that those rumors about the delays on the shooting of the fourth Spidey movie may have been true after all...

Last month, IESB reported a rumor claiming that Spider-Man 4 had been put on hold due to disputes over an incomplete script. It was claimed that Raimi was at odds with the studio over which villain would be used in the next movie(apparently he wanted The Vulture). Because of this the production was said to be put on "indefinite hold". But these were quickly shot down as rumors by Sony, who claimed production was moving forward on schedule.

Wellllllll....

According to Nikki Finke and her inside sources, the initial report was on the level. She reprints an email that went out on December 11th 2009 to the Spider-Man 4 special effects crew which says:

“We were just notified that our schedule is pushing. We will NOT be starting as planned. I’m terribly sorry for this news, and I hope this email reaches you in time to find other options. We do not know how long we are pushing, and we will not know until mid-January. By mid-January, we will be told how long the push is, whether it be 2 weeks, 2 months, or something else. The studio has every intention of making the movie, but we no longer have a confirmed start date. Again, I’m terribly sorry, but Sam Raimi has story issues [that] need to be resolved before we are ready to shoot.”

According to Finke, Raimi hates the lastest draft of the script and they are now waiting on a new version from screenwriter Alvin Sargent, who worked on both Spider-Man 2 and 3. What this means is that it is very unlikely that Sony will be able to deliver the film to theaters on the announced May 11th, 2011 release date. She also claims that Anne Hathaway really was in the running for an unspecified role, but was nixed because her price tag was too high!

Of course, that still remains rumor until confirmed but that email speaks for itself. Ah well, I don't mind waiting as long as Raimi delivers a good movie. Heres hoping.

Thanks to /film for the info.

I agree, the fans want another great Spidey film like the second one. I hope that happens and I like the Vulture but I would love to see the Lizard, I think its time we get him.
1chris2 - 1/5/2010, 3:51 PM
well i hope its a great story and the lizard is in it. if bryce returns that would be great,as well as if doc ock returns,or the use carnage. these are the things i really want more of.bring on the lizard.
InTylerWeTrust - 1/5/2010, 3:51 PM
As long as those God awful Vulture/Vulteress rumors aren't true, fine with me if they take more time on the movie :)
bleedthefreak - 1/5/2010, 3:51 PM
i actual want carnage only because i have the very first issue featuring him and i would love for the price to go up. but anyway im fine waiting i wont be to hard trust me
Timerider84 - 1/5/2010, 3:53 PM
Thank God, take the time to make it right.
Hawksblueyes - 1/5/2010, 3:56 PM
I watched a report on G4 a while back that said Raimi is pushing hard for The Vulture Vulturess story and Sony wants any villain but the Vulture.

They reported it as a fairly serious dispute.
OdinsBeard - 1/5/2010, 3:59 PM
it's hard to take a side here. i applaud sam for sticking to his guns and wanting to do a great story. but i side with the studio on not wanting the vulture in the movie. he is terribly uninteresting imo.

kraven and the lizard. how hard is that?
Christuffer - 1/5/2010, 4:02 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OdinsBeard - 1/5/2010, 4:05 PM
tea@ can't argue with you there! (not even sure if you were addressing just me anyway) but SM has such a rich gallery of rogues that if sam wants to use one thrid teir and make another one up... that just seems a little odd to me.
i'll start it now - REBOOT! haha
Phinehas - 1/5/2010, 4:10 PM
Good NEWS! They need to really make this movie POP! The studio needs to butt-out! Marvel needs to come in and claim this property back so that the Marvel Universe will finally be unitable on film.

CROSS OVERS!!!!
superdog - 1/5/2010, 4:11 PM
ive pointed this out before, when listening to the director commentary on 3, raimi said he wanted the vulture for number 3 but was overruled by the studio. he will not let that happen again. he has a hard on for the character for some reason. mark my words its will be vulture.
OdinsBeard - 1/5/2010, 4:17 PM
tea@ yeah like i said. im not sure which way to go on this. im all for creative control, plus it's impossible for us, no matter what is reported, to know exactly who wants what in which movie...

lizard. lizard. lizard. you already have dylan baker. lizard. lizard.
TheDurkinKnight - 1/5/2010, 4:22 PM
I'm sorry, I know a lot of you may not like hearing this but it's not [frick]ing rocket science. They CRANKED out the first sequel in two years, then we waited three for a shit film. I don't see why this flick is so complicated to make. Hire some BRAND NEW writers and start from scratch. Ditch Maguire cause he's getting old and it isn't the man BEHIND the mask, as in the case with IRON MAN, for these movies it's just been THE MASK.

And Anne Hathaway's price tag being too high? Really? I don't think she's that special, why not get an unknown. You could do this movie with a bunch of talented college thespians and it would still make a killing. C'mon Rami show some nuts, tell Sony to kiss off, and make this damn movie!
LEEE777 - 1/5/2010, 4:46 PM
I think SPIDER-MAN is worried about all the other big superhero movies coming out!

After the bad taste of 3, SONY should be!
comicb00kguy - 1/5/2010, 4:57 PM
I hope to God they're not doing the "Vulture/Vulturess" story. That sounds incredibly lame. That could be even worse than that godawful "young Vulture" they brought in back in the 90s. God, how I hated that character! Leave him old! That's what makes the Vulture interesting. And please! Let's not see him dating Aunt May. It's been done.

The idea that they're pushing the shoot date back to work on the script is NOT a good sign, regardless of the villain. That usually indicates serious story problems when it happens, and we need a great story after that last POS.

GUNSMITH - 1/5/2010, 4:59 PM
IF YOU PUT OUT ANOTHER SPIDERMAN FILM AFTER 3..MAKE IT GOOD...MAKE IT GOOD. OR ..DON'T DO IT.
GUNSMITH - 1/5/2010, 5:00 PM
EVERYONE WANTS THE DAMN LIZARD, WHATS THE DEAL? I MEAN, THATS WHAT EVERYONE WANTS YAKNOW?..MAJORITY.
longbowhunter - 1/5/2010, 5:08 PM
I like that Raimi is stickin' to his guns this time. He didnt want Venom in 3 and look what happened!
1chris2 - 1/5/2010, 5:15 PM
i think marvel need to take the rights to all their properties and make them all great films.
1chris2 - 1/5/2010, 5:20 PM
venom was the only thing besides bryce dallas howards that i liked in spiderman 3. sam is losing his mind.they should have used just venom in the third film.the studio new what would work, and sam wanted the vulture. could you picture that crap? replace venom with vulture in the third film. him, and sandman fighting spiderman that would have made the film even worse. just do the lizard and kraven and you have a great film and have bryce return. then in part 5 do carnage and mysterio, and in 6 use the scorpion.
foxfan - 1/5/2010, 5:21 PM
i hope they use lizard and, for inspiration, turn to some of the old stories of batman and killer croc. back in the day some of those battles down in the sewers and in other dark places were absolutely epic, with batman physically pushed to the brink and outmatched and having to outsmart the killer croc. a dark, gritty spiderman 4 with a ravenous, deadly, wild portrayal of lizard would be the bomb (imho). vulture would be cool for fans, but the old bald guy with a pudgy belly would be a joke for most people (while fans would be up in arms over a newer, sleeker, tech-savvy version).

so there it is - turn to some of the old school batman-killer croc stories for some inspiration! lizard could be a really awesome foe on film
jjmeylar - 1/5/2010, 5:21 PM
Raimi is a Spider-Fan, and he ((probably)) regrets his screw up(s).
1chris2 - 1/5/2010, 5:22 PM
hey give singer a break he did a great job on the x-men and i think after he does x-first class 1 ,and 2 he should do x-4,and 5 back to back so the original cast get more story. then marvel gets the rights back and does the films closer to how they were.
Niem8211 - 1/5/2010, 5:28 PM
This just lets everyone know Sam Raimi is a total D-BAG!!!

I think even Super Mike could direct a better movie than that guy...
spideysweb - 1/5/2010, 5:34 PM
Bring in James Cameron. He wants to do it. This would be the best news ever.
antonio - 1/5/2010, 5:53 PM
Lizard all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!james cameron wants to do it, at least get him to produce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stan lee even wants lizard for sp4,producer avi arad insisted venom in sp3
skullboy - 1/5/2010, 6:01 PM
It's for the best. Nobody wants another Spidey 3 mistake. Nobody wants an incompetent story and the actors are too old. It should not be rushed and I think it's time to put it on the back burner. Besides, there's gonna be alotta blockbusters by 2011. Green Lantern, Thor, Capt America, and Ghost Busters 3 with the possibilities of Transformers 3, GI Joe 2 and Star Trek 2. We'll do just fine without another Raimi approved Spidey film.
dellamorte1872 - 1/5/2010, 6:06 PM
G.I. JOE WAS NOT A BLOCKBUSTER, BY ANYONE'S STANDARDS
dellamorte1872 - 1/5/2010, 6:23 PM
NO THE VULTURE JUST PLAIN SUCKS I DONT WANNA SEE AN OLD DUDE TRYING TO DROP SPIDEY FROM HIGH ALTITUDES...LOL! STUDIO [frick]ED UP LAST TIME AND NOW THEY ARE TOO PARANOID TO LET RAIMI BRING HIS OLD DUDE TO THE SCREEN, WHICH IS NOT AN UNFOUNDED CONCERN. I MEAN IS THE VULTURE IN ANYONES TOP 5 SPIDEY ROGUES?
JoshWilding - 1/5/2010, 6:36 PM
God, I wish they'd just get on with it already! Still, if a slight delay means it wont end up as shit as Spider-Man 3 then so be it!

Guys, check out my EXCALIBUR Fan Cast under "Fan Fic"!!!
skullboy - 1/5/2010, 6:40 PM
Maybe yours dellamorte
superdog - 1/5/2010, 6:49 PM
gichoke was ok.......oh wait, im thinking of a different movie.
RorMachine - 1/5/2010, 6:50 PM
I don't want Vulture, BUT I do have a certain amount of faith in Raimi so Im gonna give him the benifit of the doubt until we have solid reasons not to.
MovieTheaterLad - 1/5/2010, 6:57 PM
Let Raimi do what he wants.

When he gets what he wants, he does very very well. When you make him do what he doesn't want to do, he'll troll you.

Oh, and to all you naysayers, the Vulture CAN be cool!

I mean how many people thought Whiplash would be cool for the Iron Man sequel? Yeah.

@dellamorte

How can you say that?

GI JOE was SO a blockbuster! I know because I had to serve tons and tons of people for that movie!
JoshWilding - 1/5/2010, 6:59 PM
I saw Drag Me To Hell for the first time this week on blu-ray (awesome movie!) and to me, that movie showed that Raimi is still on top form as a director! Personally, I balme a bad script for why Spider-Man 3 was so awful - if Raimi is given full creative control with the fourth movie then I have faith that even if he does use a fairly lame villain like Vulture, we'll end up with a movie as good as Spider-Man 2!
superdog - 1/5/2010, 7:02 PM
i dont care what villian it is as long as its done right. the movies should be about spiderman, the villians should be the catalyst for his growth as a character, so whichever one serves that purpose the best should be in the movie.
InTylerWeTrust - 1/5/2010, 7:11 PM
I still hope Raimi decides to go with Lizard and Kraven, fingers crossed.

GI Joe sucks.
dellamorte1872 - 1/5/2010, 7:16 PM
I DONT EVEN THINK G.I. JOKE'S DVD SALES ARE DOING WELL @TEABAG
JoshWilding - 1/5/2010, 7:17 PM
I just hope they find a way of making the Peter/Aunt May relationship more interesting...

superdog - 1/5/2010, 7:44 PM
Personally they should kill off aunt may. She's almost as annoying as dunst.
ukboy28 - 1/5/2010, 8:16 PM
well if it turns out to be another sp3 they wont be getting money again, emo parker left me with nightmares lol
RedDevil - 1/5/2010, 8:21 PM
I thought G.I Joe was decent with the action scenes even though most of them looked fake. Snake Eyes was the only one I liked to bad it was always Channing Tatum on the screen cus frankly my dear I dont give a damn about him, his acting SAUXCKXXS. anyways I am not a fan of Spiderman but I gotta admit, the first and second films were fun and I hope they make this film cus I would love to see a grittier spiderman story with a few comedic elements and not so exaggereated like Spidersuc 3.
squirt - 1/5/2010, 8:25 PM
could all be misinformation. i think i recall sam saying he was kind of mad for the last one because all of the leaks during production.
peterparker420 - 1/5/2010, 8:26 PM
As long as SM4's script is good and has great action
and LESS Kirsten Dunst, and LESS villans and MORE
of the SPIDEY I LOVE (SM2) I CAN WAIT AS LONG AS IT
TAKES!

JOSH- I agree! That sppech Aunt May gives in SM2 actually made me cry The first time I say it..She is the best!..SUPER FUNNY PICTURE!
squirt - 1/5/2010, 8:28 PM
vulture wouldnt be bad as a secondary villain. not the main one. that should be scorpion, lizard, or electro
ukboy28 - 1/5/2010, 8:33 PM
squirt@ if raimi was mad at the leaks then imagine how mad we were with the movie lol but seriously tho i do have faith in him, he is a quality director so i hope they get it right this time.
Makiveli21 - 1/5/2010, 9:00 PM
Its not that Venom SHOULDNT have been in SM3 its that he was used IMPROPERLY! Raimi doesnt know a damn thing about the comic book Spider-Man and Tobey doesnt know a damn thing about Peter Parker. I agree with Tyler about the "Vulture/Vulturess" script. TERRIBLE IDEA! And if that was one of Raimis ideas than that just further proves my point. He doesnt know anything about the characters in these stories. I have a feeling if ANY ONE of us wrote a script for SM3 that included Venom it would have been an awesome film with no dance numbers. Raimi probably thought emo Tobey dancing around was so cool. This whole thing just makes me depressed.
skot888 - 1/5/2010, 10:06 PM
Personally I hope this does get put on Hold so Raimi can concentrate on the Warcraft movie he's signed on to doing. Spiderman 3 was garbage and really there's no need for 4.
OdinsBeard - 1/5/2010, 10:08 PM
i have kind of had enough of Rami's vison of spider-man. the first spider-man movie was what got me into comics (my shop is literally 200 ft from the movie theatre, wasn't a far trip) and the more spider-man comics i go back and read form any era the more i realize while rami did a good job, as did the actors, theres just too much missing from it for me to really pine for another movie by the director.
Unless they do another tirlogy, something like this

SM4: Lizard and Kraven. MJ moves away. peter and gwen begin relationship. cliffhanger- Norman osborn is alive

SM5: Norman uses doc ocks tech no create a scorpion tail and hires gargan to kill spider-man. Peter is out to prove spider-man is the real deal when mysterio claims he's phony. ending- goblin drops gwen off of bridge.

SM'SIX': spider-man takes revenge on goblin but has to fight sinister six: scorpion, mysterio, goblin, sandman, kraven, lizard. MJ comes back into his life. they get married.

Then you open the door wide open for a symbiote trilogy. and you have yourself nine movies and 3 billion dollars.

im not saying Rami's bad. he's very very good! but i just think if this is the way things are going maybe it's time to count your 1.3 billion blessings and call it a day.
