Well this may explain the lack of any footage or real promotion for Dredd which we were expecting to see quite a while ago. Word is that the director of the movie, who has already shot it, has been asked to leave the editing and post production to others.

From The LA Times..

Although he completed shooting the picture earlier this year, Travis has not been involved in the current editing phase of the movie, after creative disagreements with producers and executives in charge of the film reached a boiling point, said three people with knowledge of the production who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak about the situation publicly. Instead, the editing room is now being run by a writer-producer on the film, the screenwriter Alex Garland, the people said.

Apparently Garland may now seek a co-director credit on the movie too since he has done the lions share of the work since Travis left the project. Details on exactly why Travis was asked to step away are sketchy but according to the LA Times it was "when Travis and producers and executives in charge of the production did not see eye-to-eye on footage Travis was delivering". The blog also mentions that re-shoots are a possibility. This type of thing is rare, but not unheard of. Lets just hope that we still get a good movie out of all of it.

m1312020 - 10/7/2011, 9:23 AM
Damn this sounds bad for Dredd.I was hoping for this
to redeem the the movie version of this character.
nailbiter111 - 10/7/2011, 9:35 AM

This is a horrible motion, for both the final film, the production, and of course, the director. It might be completely different from what was intended. Nobody wins.
rogmel - 10/7/2011, 9:59 AM
Same thing happened with "Punisher: War Zone", and everyone remembers what a piece of sh*t that turned out to be.

Chances are the director f-ed it up and now the studio has to step in and try to clean it up. But once it's in the editing room the best you can do is just polish what is already a turd.
kevshardlemonade - 10/7/2011, 10:00 AM
Good! Directors with "vision" dont know the first thing about movie making. Now, studio execs, they know!
mctrinket - 10/7/2011, 10:01 AM

I was a firm supporter of the film until they showed how bad the set pieces were and especially how stupid Urban looked in the role. True we didn't see "much" and a lot of it could be added with plenty of CGI in post production. Thing is, i was under the impression that the budget wouldn't allow much CGI to be used. So it really looked grim at the time. Now, with all this added drama, it looks dredded. I hope it all works out for us fans in the end. Consequently, i'm still very fond of Stallone's stab at it (minus schnieder, duh) so i won't be the first to shedd a tear should it go straight to DVD. As long as they make it look better than Warzone, that's all i'm asking.
BackwardGalaxy - 10/7/2011, 10:05 AM
Sounds like a mess.
BigTodd71 - 10/7/2011, 10:06 AM
they can completely save this movie just hire rob schnieder!
UltimaRex - 10/7/2011, 10:07 AM

Crash and burn.... Crash and burn
Locdogg81 - 10/7/2011, 10:22 AM
Let me guess...the director wants a faithful, r-rated adaption with a great story but a lot of violence and the studio wants a pg-13 mass appeal version they can sell a shit load of toys with. Why does that sound so familiar?
ThaMessenger07 - 10/7/2011, 10:32 AM
Sounds like this could be as bad as the Super Mario Bros. Movie.....w.e
MatchesMalone - 10/7/2011, 10:32 AM
@Shaman- "it looks dredded." Heh-heh. :)
Mysterion - 10/7/2011, 10:35 AM
Didnt the same thing happened with Warzone & Wolfman? Something tells me this is will be a direct to DVD.
Shaman - 10/7/2011, 10:40 AM
MatchesMalone- *wink wink* ;P
Dedpool - 10/7/2011, 10:40 AM
Wow sounds like he got Donnered!!!
Pauul - 10/7/2011, 10:40 AM
Hang on, they're saying that Alex Garland (who wrote the screenplays for 28 Days Later and Sunshine) is the one editing the film.

That hardly says to me that they are trying to tone things down at all.

He wrote the screenplay and served as producer, so he's hardly been uninvolved in the project.

We don't know why the director was replaced but for all we know this will result in a movie which is more faithful to the comic.

We'll just have to wait and see.
Boyle360 - 10/7/2011, 10:41 AM
Aw man it's gonna suck hard... :(
Starlight - 10/7/2011, 10:46 AM
Hey, I was excited about this movie, and even though I do not know the director or any of his previosu work (meaning don't know if this change may be good or bad), one question still pops up.....

WTF??????!!!!!!!!
RyanLantern77 - 10/7/2011, 10:46 AM
Karl Urban is still my dirty dawg
write33 - 10/7/2011, 11:01 AM
ugh indeed. bad sign. ah well. i still enjoy Urban's work quite a bit.
JonathaNisMagnuM - 10/7/2011, 11:04 AM
Wow, I guess it's over.....Wait, Stallone has something to say about New Judge Dredd...

Joe6Pack74 - 10/7/2011, 11:08 AM
Well that is just great. I guess it will be getting the "Green Lantern" award next year for most anticipated flop.
jimoakley666 - 10/7/2011, 11:08 AM
I'd normally fear this kind of news... but Alex Garland knows his way around a story and the producers are the guys who made 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Slum Dog Millionare, while Travis directed Vantage Point.

It may turn out all the better for it. And let's face it, Garland doesn't do PG stories.
Ceejay - 10/7/2011, 11:32 AM
Same shit happened with the last Judge Dredd movie so not surprised!
warlock - 10/7/2011, 11:42 AM
This Movies, going to a suck, I reali was hoping to have faith in, Cuz URBAN WAS IN IT.
Vital - 10/7/2011, 11:53 AM
Hmm, too bad we don't have details to get to the bottom of this. Could be good, could be bad, we just don't know til we see the movie.
Vital - 10/7/2011, 11:54 AM
And which studio is it?
Shaman - 10/7/2011, 11:54 AM
BRING ON THE TRAILER!!! :))
sexfoodcomics - 10/7/2011, 12:13 PM
well. This movie will now suck. A producer making creative decisions is never a good thing.
pepe - 10/7/2011, 12:17 PM
crap studio
hush - 10/7/2011, 12:19 PM
Oh dear...
jazzman - 10/7/2011, 12:26 PM

NOLANITE - 10/7/2011, 12:49 PM
And because of this the movie will stink.
Never was looking forward to a new DREDD.
robbo1701 - 10/7/2011, 1:02 PM
alarm bells are ringing this isjust like when eWarner spent 9 milllion extra bucks on GL like 8 weeks before it was due to be released this does not look good at all
themayer88 - 10/7/2011, 1:26 PM
WOW. this makes me really nervous that this movie is not going to be good.
superwolverine - 10/7/2011, 1:29 PM
Doesn't matter its still going to be better than stalone version.
manichispanic - 10/7/2011, 1:58 PM
shitty
ManOfKrypton - 10/7/2011, 2:02 PM
This makes me nervous - I read the script and it's a solid action film... So what on earth went wrong or what didn't the studios like about Travis?
AlexDeLarge87 - 10/7/2011, 2:10 PM
Well... this makes me worried :S

The pics i´ve seen looked pretty cool and the plot sounded interesting so i really hope this delivers.
Pauul - 10/7/2011, 2:27 PM
@ManOfKrypton - If you liked the script, shouldn't you be less worried?

Everyone seems to be complaining how the producer is taking over, while forgetting that he is also the screenwriter.

Yeah, producing isn't necessarily a creative job.

Screenwriting on the other hand, definetly is.

Maybe the director was taking the film in the wrong direction and because the producers decided to take this action, the film will turn out better than it otherwise would have.

Wow, some of you guys really need to try and be more optimistic.
fistofthenorthstar - 10/7/2011, 2:42 PM
yup, this flick has gone to shyt!
Bandrews1 - 10/7/2011, 4:02 PM
As long as the finished product comes out good, that's all that matters.
