Bryan Singer Still Unsure If His Version Of "Starbuck" In Battlestar Galactica Will Be Male Or Female

Now that we know Singer's Excalibur is off the cards and he is moving ahead with his take on BSG the big questions are going to be asked. SFX begins with a pretty major one..

After revealing to the mag the other day that his take on Excalibur has been shelved Bryan Singer announced that he would be taking on a big screen version of Battlestar Galactica when he finished up Jack The Giant Killer. Fans of the show(s) will know that we have had two versions of the character Starbuck. In the original '70s series it was Dirk Benedict and in the hugely successful reboot Katee Sackhoff. So which version will Singer be going with?

“You want to know if Starbuck will be male or female, right?” he laughs. Yep. “Well, right now I haven’t made my mind up on that. But whatever way we go, I’m sure it will be complementary to the whole Battlestar Galactica mythology.”

Ok, well if it's faithful to the original mythology then that would be male right? I mean there are only two choices here! Though they obviously have a lot in common, both tv versions of BSG are also very different. It will be interesting to see what yet another take can bring to the table. What do you guys think? Should the new Starbuck visit the ladies or gents?

Ive never seen the original or any films but only just got into the reboot and gotta say while I originally thought Starbuck was a bit one sided she's turned out to be one of my fav characters and anyway you slice it its going to be weird seeing another actor play that character since Ive only just recently come to know them. That said a new take will be interesting and I have my fingers crossed itll be a good peice of sci-fi. Not sure how you can improve the show though, especially when condensing the myriad of religious and political issues fr a big screen adaption.

Why would he even bother? On his BEST day, he would not be able to even come close to the latest show.

This guy needs to retire.

I am a pretty avid Battlestar Galactica fan; but deciding if Starbuck should be male or female is pretty tough.

On one hand, it would be pretty cool to see a male actor be a a good version of Dirk Bennedict's Starbuck. On the other hand, the rowdy, tomboyish female Buckstar has always been a great sign of progression for women.
. . . . . I might have to go with male; mostly because of my ideas of bromance being more stable than romances (I actually enjoy the relationship between Apollo and Buckstar in the original more than the rebooted one) and the film was said to be more in line to the original BSG.

I'm such a big fan of the rebooted show I dont think I could watch other actors play these characters now. This movie sounds dubious.

Original BSG = Adam West Batman

New BSG = Chris Nolan Batman

Depends on what you are into I guess. I enjoyed em both but I much preferred the new one. Before they were caricatures, that show made them real characters. Sure it could be a bit dark, even depressing but so what? Good tv is good tv. The Wire wasn't exactly a laugh riot either.

I would prefer the male character. Course I grew up and loved the original. The new one is boring and I hate the new story arc.

@Tea, I dunno man..maybe at the time it would have got away with a Burton comparison but having watched an ep fairly recently I can tell you it doe snot hold up well on really any level. Even the acting..and they were all fine actors..is sub par. But I loved it as a kid too, I mean that was why I was so against the remake when I heard, but then I saw it and was blown away. Wasn't perfect, some episodes were bad, and the ending was awful but it's arguably my favorite tv show of all time. Game Of Thrones has the potential to overthrow it though.

Yeah, as for the old show, i'm with Ror. But i actually didn't grow up with it. I never had cable as a kid so all i saw was Shatner's Trek or "V" all the time. When i actually could watch an episode of it, it was too late. The acting turned me off within 5 minutes of it.

Frakk Singer!
I loved the first one as a kid, and enjoyed a lot of the new version, there´s no need to touch this!

Leave BSG alone. The new series hit it perfect - no need for improvement.

I have no idea how a 2 hour movie is going to do justice to an excellent series that went many seasons? They won't be able to scratch the surface of the characters as we've seen them developed in the series. Can't those goons just come up with a new idea?

What could Singer POSSIBLY add to / explore in the franchise that hasn't already been added to or explored?! Is he going to do another homage to the original (like his Superman fiasco)? Mr. Singer, put down the Cylon helmet and slowly back away... PLEASE!

SHAMAN! Where the !@$#! have you been, man?!

I loved the original BSG as a kid. Pity there were only three networks back then so this classic show didn't have the chance to hang around and build an audience that the later one did. Found the DVD's a while back and rediscovered just why I loved the show so much. It's perfect for anyone who likes some FUN in their sci-fi. For its time, it was very well done and well-acted.

The newer series was well-acted and well-written from what I've seen of it, but I just can't get into it the same way I did with the original. And you bashers of the original should remember that without the original, there never would have been a second series done.

The original is good fun for a cheesy tv version of Star Wars, so I say stick with the male Starbuck.

I never could get into the reboot. I'm a sci-fi fanatic, but it just felt like they were trying to damn hard to be dark and cool at the same time.

Yeah, stay away from Buck Rogers too! Nothing can replace cool looking starfighters and futuristic lycra girls.

This movie does not need to be made. The 2004 BSG is too fresh in our collective consciousness to warrant this. Maybe in another 5 to 10 years, but not now.

IMO, the 2004 BSG is some of the best sci-fi ever produced.

i am a fan of both but i gotta say the newer version is the shiznit. just recast everybody from the show, throw in 1 or 2 big names to give it that blockbuster feel (i.e. bruce willis..the rock or a nameless hottie),add some cameos from the original cast and pump up the action!

@VictorHugo - I caught an episode of Buck Rogers recently and I had to take care of some business after I saw Erin Gray in her catsuit ;)

I am still trying to figure out why we need a new take on BSG???? What can Singer add??
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 10/20/2011, 3:59 PM
Cap1945: That is a very good question. What Singer is likely to do is to borrow elements from both shows and mix them together in a way that fans of neither series will approve of.

Richard Hatch had come up with a great idea for a Galactica movie based on the original series called The Second Coming. There may be a better copy up somewhere, but check this out.

Bryan Singer needs a career change. Maybe he should try gardening. That way if he [frick]s up hes not really hurting anyone else. Get out of the movie business Bryan Singer, its for the best. ;D Thats my 2 cents and I'm all outta change!

Bryan Singer is gay so I'll go on a limb here and say he'll go for a male Starbuck. Couldn't care less though. I'm sure he'll never get remotely close to the epicness and quality of the last series.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 10/20/2011, 8:47 PM
Gunslinger - You're comment is out of line. His sexual orientation isn't the question here, his skill as a director IS. Singer IS a decent DRAMA director (he's got a proven track record), it's his CBM's most of us have problems with. I'll even give credit to SOME of his scenes in the 'X-Men' films and 'Superman Returns' (hear that Ror, I actually ADMIT to LIKING some of Singer's CBM scenes) - they WERE good, but the overall films were homages to cartoons and 30 year-old movies, NOT the original source material, which upset a lot of comic book devotes.

Keep Singer out of this kind of movies...Please!!!!! He´ll ruin this... somebody, please, put a stop to this!!!!
Gunslinger
Gunslinger - 10/21/2011, 2:45 PM
@loganoneil: not mocking or saying he has to burn for being gay... Don't twist my words, making an observation on a known fact. To be honest, if it was me (and no, I'm not an aspiring director nor do I have a clue about how to do that job) I would go for a female Starbucks for 2 reasons: 1) loved the reboot and what they did with the character 2) a hot and talented actress would make my working day a lot better.

How do you think Routh got the Superman gig when he was serving coffee to Singer? Did his acting abilities become really obvious through the way he was waiting tables? No. Not really. I'm guessing there was an ulterior motive, cause the guy responsible for choosing the cast for "The Usual Suspects" wouldn't choose Routh to play as Superman. It resulted in the rape and bastardisation of a beloved comic book character whose influence spans generations.

I have to admit though... The nightcrawler opening scene in X2 was sweet. But that's it.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 10/23/2011, 9:07 PM
Gunslinger - Routh got the part because he resembled Reeve, and (like Reeve) he was an unknown. Remember, Singer had a hard-on for the Donner films (NOT the comic books) and was trying his best to throw up an homage to them. As for the X-Men, his inspiration was from the 90's CARTOON and not the 50-plus years of history/backstory he could have pulled from. Add in the FACTS that he (on NUMEROUS occassions) has admitted to NEVER reading a comic book, or actually LIKING the genre leads me to believe he was just being a lazy SOB and didn't do his homework!
