Producer Roy Lee sat down with Shocktillyoudrop to talk about Spike Lee's planned remake of Park Chan Wook's Oldboy, which is itself based on a Manga of the same name. It sounds as if this movie will indeed be more of a remake than another adaptation of the comic as Lee says that although there will be some changes both films will be very similar. He also says that people might find this version's ending "a bit darker" than the original. How that is even possible I don't know but I'm certainly curious as to what is in store..

“We are planning to shoot ‘Old Boy’ in March and that should start pre-production in late January,” he said. “This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences–especially fans of the original movie–will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker.” He added that “there’s going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike’s signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie.”

Joe (Oh Dae-Su in the original) will be played by Josh Brolin. No other cast members have been locked in but both Colin Firth and Christian Bale have been linked to the part of the lead villain. Updates as we have em.

I love the original and I honestly can't wait for this one. I love the cast so far and they seem to be working hard on this one.

The end of the original left me frackin depressed for the whole day. Darker again? Is he going to

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Have Joe and his "lover" have a kid and then lock that up for 15 years too? I bet that's it:)
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/28/2011, 6:48 AM
I bet Oh Dae Su aka Joe is gonna kill his "lover" and then himself.
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/28/2011, 6:49 AM
And the lead villain walks away alive.

As much as a think the original is perfect, I'm glad to hear that he's making a few changes to keep those of us that have seen it guessing.

I look forward to this actually,. I'm hoping the new elements are actually taken from the original manga. Also this always seemed like a twitsed "Count of Monte Crtisto" to me.

The movies has been made...it's called the Old Boy the original movie.
Go make your own movie with Black people in it and stop stealing someone else's idea.

@Fearless showing racism at its best last time i checked there is not 1 black man in this film
Misterfan - 11/28/2011, 10:40 AM
HA! lets see them top that!
RorMachine - 11/28/2011, 10:54 AM
Racism and terrible grammar. Guess they go hand in hand.

I shudder any time I read Mark Protosevich's name in association with a film. Thor was a pleasant surprise, but I think that had more to do with Branagh and Marvel.

Not keen on Lee as director either. As Samuel L Jackson once said while defending Jackie Brown from Spike Lee;

"[Jackie Brown] is a good film, and Spike hasn't made one of those in a few years"

Ouch.
mrbadexample - 11/28/2011, 1:03 PM
how can it be more darker than the original. its impossible, its one of the darkest, most deprassing endings i've seen so far.
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/28/2011, 1:52 PM
Best movies from Spike.

Inside Man and Summer of Sam.
paptschik - 11/28/2011, 3:15 PM
Why do people go on about "the original"? The original was already based on a source material and changed COUNTLESS things, most notably, of course, the fact that suddenly nobody was japanese.

What disappoints me here is that it sounds like it'll stick closer to the Korean movie and not the manga as I actually expected...that kinda sucks.
Bandrews1 - 11/28/2011, 4:08 PM
Sounds interesting, and its cool they're adding some new things to story instead a straight up remake,so we'll see what happens.

Darker ending? I believe it when I see it. And throw up then.
