Michael Wilkinson spoke at the 5D | FLUX conference earlier this week, and dropped a few tidbits regarding Superman's iconic "S" costume design and how it will tie in to Krypton's history..

Nothing too revealing here but maybe some mild SPOILERS if you want to know absolutely nothing about the movie before seeing it. Costume designer Michael Wilkinson spoke at the 5D | FLUX conference at the USC School of Cinematic Arts the other day and revealed a few interesting things about Krypton and Superman's duds. Apparently his fashion sense is shared by his Kryptonian kin, and that distinctive "chain linked look" that has divided fans is designed that way for a specific reason.

From billdesowitz.com

Wilkinson explained that since they created a “neo-medieval” back story for Krypton (which included the creation of a new language), it made sense to utilize the suit design as part of the mythology. “Everyone on Krypton wears this suit,” he suggested. Using ZBrush and rapid prototyping, Wilkinson came up the blue/gray color and chain-linked look. “It has function and purpose and a logic to this fantastical world,” he added.

So nothing too exciting but a few interesting details on Krypton etc. I like that they will be perhaps delving further back into the planet's origins and history that we have seen before in previous movies. What do you guys make of it?

Sounds good. We need a new picture of the suit in it's full glory though. Pictures of other Kryptonians wouldn't hurt either. Also a picture of Amy Adam's Lois Lane would be nice.
PeterParker1991 - 3/16/2012, 4:45 PM
Nice. Yet another film that is going to give more depth to an iconic hero.
Oxbow - 3/16/2012, 4:47 PM
lol they should check out the New Krypton storyline if they really wanna be "historical" about this...the foundation, guilds and power-balance of their civilization are really well explored in that run
MovieMann - 3/16/2012, 4:57 PM
I like how they are being creative, and have a vision, instead of just thinking
" This has to be as close to the comics as possible!!"

And the whole language creation thing is intriguing, the details like that, are the ones that make a big positive difference.
thetrojan - 3/16/2012, 4:58 PM
He wills ay,"I AM ZOD,KNEEL BEFORE ME!"

simple.
mgeoff88 - 3/16/2012, 5:03 PM
That's a new and interesting take on Krypton.

So Superman's suit is essentially modern chain mail? I think the movie costume looks very cool. It needed a modern update for the big screen IMO.
ColonoscopyKid - 3/16/2012, 5:07 PM
Ok I get it already, just show us some quality pictures.
Supes17 - 3/16/2012, 5:34 PM
Cool.

I want to speak Kryptonian
AlibiBreakfast - 3/16/2012, 5:35 PM
I'm a Marvel guy, but Superman has always been my #1 (I know, I know). One of my first toys was a Supes action figure that I still have on my mantle almost 30 years later. I mention all that to establish that I'm not just some troll taking cheap shots when I say this: From the bracelets to the basketball texture, the new suit is just awful. I'm hopeful it will work in the context of the the story, but I'm not holding my breath.

"It has function and purpose and a logic to this fantastical world."

Just like the red trunks! lol I couldn't be happier w/ the new suit.

DON'T FCUK WITH THE MYTHOLOGY.. DON'T FCUK WITH THE SUIT. DUMB ARSES!
nowtheresaBATman - 3/16/2012, 5:53 PM
"neo-medieval" that sounds f-ing awesome too!
nowtheresaBATman - 3/16/2012, 5:54 PM
^^let it go already your as powerless as Superman w/ belly full of kryptonite to do anything about it.
gmoney0505 - 3/16/2012, 6:07 PM
@Froggy

My guess for Zod learning English is do it like they did Kara for Superman/Batman Apocalypse. It took her about only a week to learn the whole language because of her increase brain function from being expose to the yellow sun.

@ironman53 The Elvish was awesome in LOTR because Tolkien created those stories around his invented languages as a linguist. This will be nothing like Tolkien's genius! This will be a sad Hollywood made up language.
hartley07 - 3/16/2012, 6:41 PM
love the idea. makes perfect sense. always wondered that; did everyone from krypton wear tights and a cape? if they didnt,the suit makes no sense.
GUNSMITH - 3/16/2012, 6:42 PM
IS MICHAEL SHANNON GONNA SPORT THE ZOD "STACHE AND GOATIE "?

I predict this to be the best 'Superman' ANYTHING ever.

That includes all the TV shows, cartoons,movies and animated movies! Watch and see...
headlopper - 3/16/2012, 7:16 PM
...got a good feeling about this film.
blkyank - 3/16/2012, 7:17 PM
@Intruder

The whole idea about exploring the history of Krypton goes back at least to the late 80's and "The World of Krypton" post crisis,post Man of Steel mini series.
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/16/2012, 7:35 PM
I like the new look and something new, we can't go back to the old look since this is not the same superman as Richard donner's. His is still classic and I like it for that time and still now IMO but if it's a new take on superman, I'm open for new design and it's only right. If there was a no superman movie ever made and this is the first how would it look like to appeal to new audience and also old fans? That's what I want and I'm happy they did that, it's very logical.

All comic book superhero characters change the look in a live action motion picture because they want to attract to modern audience as well as none fans. I can't wait for this movie and it's going to put superman back to its glory. I want the teaser, I want a taste of the music. Not a teaser that shows everything because that is a sign of it being bad IMO.
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/16/2012, 7:41 PM
@intruder

I thought Thor was inspired by superman since superman came out first as a character and try just added a different back story on the character. A character that is super strong like supe and flys with a red cape. In the live action his an alien like superman. Everything you see in comics is an inspiration from one another simple as that, also synder for a superman flick? Ha superman in its action that everyone is waiting for, story won't be there like Nolan's but I well say it well be descent then synder's past movies. This well be a watchmen/300 level with a hint of action from sucker punch. Don't be hating brother.
nowtheresaBATman - 3/16/2012, 7:43 PM
@headlopper yes I believe it will be. It HAS to be.
Dev7 - 3/16/2012, 7:44 PM
Yes yes yes Intruder, all DC movies will fail, DC is a stupid comic book company with corny cheesy characters with dumb personalities and abilities unlike Marvel's cool and interesting cinematic friendly characters. DC isn't even wiping Marvel's ass.

Happy now?
nowtheresaBATman - 3/16/2012, 7:47 PM
Stan Lee totally was inspired by Superman when it comes to Thor but so what?
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/16/2012, 7:48 PM
@intruder

No one well say that, but actually synder did kinda hinted it back then that superman and Thor are equal as a character or similar. He did say "Thor has a movie" it's a little diss if you look at it but also a priase since its like saying we have to step up superman. Thor is a good movie IMO, I like the feel and look also I wish he wore the helmet while fighting, and a little more action or more scene's in Asgard or the other realms and not just earth. Hey that's what a sequel is for. I for one like both but again I'm a superman fan more and I like being entertained on both Marvel and DC universe.
thewolfx - 3/16/2012, 7:50 PM
@trudy

thor was a good movie

but um they made him an alien

supes says SIT THE [frick] DOWN

:P
GizmoEl - 3/16/2012, 7:55 PM
Thor flew like two or three times in the movie, plus he was depowered for the most part.

I don't think the two movies should be compared.. especially since Superman is one of the most recognizable comic book character aside from Batman and Spider-Man.

In anycase, I'm not looking forward to this movie.
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/16/2012, 8:20 PM
@intruder

Whoa easy there intruder did you read my next comment after your second comment??? I didn't attack you at my next comment. I can see you weren't attack or starting a DC vs Marvel, I respect that and you have an opinion like anyone else. Did you even read my next comment before you go out blasting??? Or did my frist comment got you wild out?
GUNSMITH - 3/16/2012, 8:21 PM
IF YOU THINK "HAS POWERS" AND IS FROM ANOTHER REALM OTHER THAN EARTH..YOU CAN CALL THEM WHATEVER YOU WANT-ALIEN-GODS-SUPER HEROES..IT'S JUST A WAY OF SAYING IT IS ALL.
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/16/2012, 8:21 PM
Also what are you implying at a not scene in a rocket ship??? Why trolling?
superiron19 - 3/16/2012, 8:22 PM
@Intruder shame on you Thor is not a comparative for the MAN OF STEEL is like compare The incredible hulk vs The dark Knight... (Thor was good and funny.. I like it..)
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/16/2012, 8:24 PM
All it comes down to is these characters in there own movie, well it be good and entertain us? I like superman and I hope it does well and I already am looking forward to the sequel for Thor and already express my thoughts and interest.
JorL5150 - 3/16/2012, 8:34 PM
it never ceases to amaze ( and annoy) me how limited the depth of knowledge of the superman mythos when people comment.

the idea that kryptonians wear a high-tech skin tight undergarment is not new. it was john byrnes idea in 1986. they wear ceremonial attire on top of that. jeph loeb tried to get away fromthat but geoff johns reinforced it.

the skin tight wrap is not just "fashion" but also technology. everything about krypton technology is blended with science, art, architecture etc.

also, that krypton would have an elitist political structure is nothing new.
JorL5150 - 3/16/2012, 8:36 PM
also- as much as i am ...concerned about snyder being up to this, he was not making superman analogous to thor. quite the contrary. he was saying that superman was a much BIGGER character and should have a spectacle picture if we're ina place where there's a thor movie.
G - 3/16/2012, 8:54 PM
The truth is, these people simply LOVE to change things. To put their own signature on it so they can feel special. And, then they write something in the story to "explain it". In other words.. Did they write a story that required a design change? Or, did they change the design to stroke themselves, and then write the story around it? (which came first, the chicken or the egg)
superiron19 - 3/16/2012, 9:03 PM
@Intruder... of course not... it was only a simple comment...
thewolfx - 3/16/2012, 9:10 PM
@trudy

oh please shed some light on how more complicated thor all going from god to alien really is

this kid...
Netman0007 - 3/16/2012, 9:10 PM
so there may be some truth to the sword fighting trailer then?
superiron19 - 3/16/2012, 9:20 PM
you are right those superheroes don't have comparison (superman and batman).... they´re magnificent.
thewolfx - 3/16/2012, 9:28 PM
@trudy

been watched it

still stands thor was turned into an alien

but i guess your too lazy to explain yourself , all good
JM4Superman - 3/16/2012, 9:28 PM
