Three Directors In The Running To Helm CAPTAIN AMERICA Sequel!

Vulture are reporting that Marvel have whittled down a shortlist of ten to just three - or four if you count the two Community directors in the running! Click to find out who the others are..

It seems that Joe Joshnston won't be returning to direct the follow up to Captain America: The First Avenger. According to Vulture, Marvel have narrowed the field to three possible choices..

Insiders tell us that a field of ten directors has been whittled to just three for the follow-up to last summer's hit: George Nolfi, the writer-director of The Adjustment Bureau; F. Gary Gray, best known for directing The Italian Job; and, naturally … Community's Anthony and Joseph Russo?

Apparently the Russo Brothers made the cut due to Kevin Feige getting on well with them in their series of meetings. Sources tell Vulture that Feige is "a vibe guy", adding: “He likes to see if he gets along with people before he’ll decide about spending the next two years with them. And apparently, they hit it off with Kevin in the room.”. They seem like an unusual choice for this type of movie given that they have won Emmys for their comedy chops with Community, but many directors have made the genre switch successfully in the past. As for the other two, Gray also directed the mediocre Law Abiding Citizen to go along with the mediocre Italian Job. Although Nolfi only has one directing credit under his belt, The Adjustment Bureau is a much better effort. Of course nothing is set in stone (just ask Patty Jenkins how quickly things can change at Marvel!) but all going to plan, meeting with all three candidates are being scheduled for early next month, with a decision possibly being made as early as mid-April.

Whoa, interesting. I would go with Nolfi (loved The Adjustment Bureau), but Community is great and Russo brothers directed some of the best episodes. But, if any of these guys get the job, I'm all for it.
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:17 AM
NOLFI - thats my vote. never saw that film but that synopsis is all about lost "love" he sounds perfect to highlight CAPS 1st modern day tale
Wildaniel - 3/30/2012, 7:17 AM
First Kenneth Branagh now Joe Joshnston? Joe did a great job with The First Avenger, it was perfect!
kurekurcubic - 3/30/2012, 7:18 AM
all uninterested choices.well maybe nolfi,i dont know
MarkJulian - 3/30/2012, 7:18 AM
This does not please me.
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:19 AM
plus he had a bunch of ACTION so def him!
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:20 AM
the more and more i think about it I AM RIGHT! def. NOLFI
Ha1frican - 3/30/2012, 7:20 AM
Why no joe Johnston? He was the reason Cap 1 was so god. While I would bea little worried that it wasn't a period peic I think he could still do it.
Ha1frican - 3/30/2012, 7:21 AM
Also did anyone notice that Jon favreau directed Zathura and got Iron man and Jo Johnston did Jumanji and got CA: TFA ?
nailbiter111 - 3/30/2012, 7:23 AM
these are some strange choices
WolvieCBM - 3/30/2012, 7:26 AM
Johnston never signed for the sequel, @Ha1frican.

If anything MS proved they know how to find good directors for their films. It's all good.
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:29 AM
JOHNSTON got CAP b/c QUESADA + COMPANY absolutely loved the vibe from ROCKETEER it was a nice period piece and the sole reason he was hired. FAV was hired for IRON MAN just b/c he could produce films on shoe string budgets like SWINGERS plus he "got" the "sarcastic playa" MARVEL wants IRON MAN as. FAV got the sequel b/c the cast loved him but he wont return b/c the company gave him zero freedom with the plot, it needed to have heavy AVENGERS influences
Hawksblueyes - 3/30/2012, 7:29 AM
These choices make perfect sense if we aren't going back to the 40's. Modern day Cap stories are more espionage/spy themed than his WWII persona. Every one of these guys have proven they know how to handle that type of story.
WolvieCBM - 3/30/2012, 7:31 AM
Hawksblueyes: Agreed. I'm sure we will see some flashbacks, but modern day story for Cap 2 is the way to go.
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:35 AM
BRANAGH (whatever the spelling is), should be back for THOR 2. surprised he's not although THOR 2 could have lil to do with EARTH meaning that "GAME OF THRONES" dude is perfect b/c he will immerse us in ASGARD + the otherworldly settings he'll need
nailbiter111 - 3/30/2012, 7:37 AM
i guess i'll pull for the Community guys.
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:38 AM
good choices so far but WHEDON shoulda been there for IRON MAN 2 b/c he wrote AVENGERS and prolly woulda been not only better but more in touch with his AVENGERS opus they were building to
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:41 AM
FAV just listened to orders while WHEDON woulda made use of the muddle they needed created
Orphix - 3/30/2012, 7:41 AM
Well - Wlcome to Collinwood is one of my all time fave films so give it to the Russo Bros on that basis alone.

:o)
ksommer - 3/30/2012, 7:44 AM
For everyone saying why not Johnson, keep in mind he was brought on to do a period piece. Make it look like Indiana Jones. It no longer is a period piece and it's in present day. Hence why they probably don't want to bring him back.
jbak368 - 3/30/2012, 7:50 AM
I'll be the Community guys could do a great job. They've shown with that show that they now exactly how to make use of tropes while not making it feel stale, and they've handled a really diverse variety of situations and emotions on that show.

I would guess that Marvel will continue the practice of not re-using directors on the same property. It means that the director's salary doesn't have to go up, for one thing, and it also keeps things fresh. The only time they've re-hired a director for a sequel so far is Favs, and look how that turned out (of course I'd blame Marvel more than Favs for that one personally). Joss Whedon may be an exception if he knocks The Avengers out of the park.

RunDTC - 3/30/2012, 7:50 AM
hm. what about Randall Wallace (We Were Soldiers, Secretariat) , Tony Scott (Man on Fire, Deja Vu, Unstoppable, Enemy of the State, Crimson Tide, True Romance, Top Gun) , Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile, The River Wild) , or Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, The Siege, Legends of the Fall, Glory) ?
Greengo - 3/30/2012, 7:53 AM
I liked Italian Job & Law Abiding Citizen.

Not even Barack Obama liked the Adjustment Bureau.

And everyone one knows that in showbiz 'getting along' means a good bj.
SageMode - 3/30/2012, 7:53 AM
George Nolfi for Captain America: Super Soldier.
peppy - 3/30/2012, 7:55 AM
Man bring on cap 2 . Can't [frick]ing wait
Seejay - 3/30/2012, 7:56 AM
@ RunDTC

Anyone of those would be good. As with Thor 2, Captain America 2 needs to be more action packed.

However still with substance; not a Micheal Bay movie..
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:57 AM
OBAMA is kinda a weak president why would MARVEL care if HE liked his filmography?
GreendaleHumanBeing - 3/30/2012, 7:58 AM
I guess we know what camp I'm in.

dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 7:59 AM
thats like saying CARTER didnt like SPIDEY so they waited a while to try it out
dellamorte1872 - 3/30/2012, 8:00 AM
hey i commented on that b/c the other dude commented on OBAMA as his reasoning
MassExecutions - 3/30/2012, 8:02 AM
Good ones, RunDTC.
Greengo - 3/30/2012, 8:02 AM
Wtf are you guys talking about. I'm just saying Adjustment Bureau sucked THAT bad. Calm down

RocketMadnessBoss - 3/30/2012, 8:02 AM
Oh god... these are horrible. The Adjustment Bureau was pathetic, and I really wanted to like it.

I guess Marvel is sticking with their plan to get directors they can control...
Greengo - 3/30/2012, 8:03 AM
Actually maybe thats the best argument FOR Nolfi : )
ClaireLannister2016 - 3/30/2012, 8:05 AM
I do no care for any of these choices
Greengo - 3/30/2012, 8:05 AM
Gusto - 3/30/2012, 8:06 AM
What the hell happened to Johnston?
marvel72 - 3/30/2012, 8:07 AM
the adjustment bureau was a good film,i would go with nolfi.

captain america 2 must have baron zemo & crossbones, maybe add falcon or winter soldier as well.
RorMachine - 3/30/2012, 8:07 AM
There's a reason why Marvel never go for big name directors for their movies..very simply, they want control. They want their own stable. Joss Whedon is probably the most well know director they have hired and even he only actually had one movie under his belt at the time. I';m not saying they haven't done a great job so far..they have (for the most part), but as long as Feige is calling the shots you will not see a maverick director who can put his own style into the movie, or a big name like James Cameron, Ridley Scott..hell I doubt they would even consider Gullermo Del Toro. They also cost too much:)
MassExecutions - 3/30/2012, 8:10 AM
So I was think, Cap is a throwback hero and consument good guy...maybe somebody who directed a western...say, who directed the 3:10 to Yuma remake? *slaps forehead* Oh yeah, James Mangold, the guy who's now directing The Wolverine.

Backing up and trying again.
Greengo - 3/30/2012, 8:10 AM
Well Marvel are a bunch of prissy little snobs aren't they.
BruceLeroy - 3/30/2012, 8:10 AM
Those director choices make plenty of sense. The next Captain America should not be a period piece. Captain America's best present day stories involve spy thriller elements. Ed Brubaker nailed to espionage aspect so they probably will draw inspiration from that.
Greengo - 3/30/2012, 8:14 AM
Maybe the sequel will be based around Winter Soldier and his rediscovery.
ISleepNow - 3/30/2012, 8:20 AM
Ha1frican - 3/30/2012, 8:22 AM
@WolvieCBM that's what worries me. They are falling pre to what may of us worry bout Christopher Nolan. Eventually it's going t happen that they will make something bad. That's why I say stick with what works. Taking risks on shane black and a new Cap director COULD pay off but it could just as easily be awful...
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 8:22 AM
Why can't they retain directors? In everyone one of their franchises the director has left. None of the sequels are going to have the same vibe, which with Captain America wouldn't be a bad thing. The first 30 minutes of TFA was great, the rest was generic and cliche. Playing musical chairs with directors is never a good way to ensure the success of a franchise.
nordberg - 3/30/2012, 8:24 AM
I thought The Adjustment Bureau was pretty hokey. That said, so long as Nolfi isn't writing it, I'd go with him.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 8:25 AM
It's going to be hard for Marvel to hire established creative directors, because they are so hands on. I think for Marvel to really break through and make breath taking films they need to fail a little bit first. I think The Avengers will be fantastic, but I have little hopes the sequels will be anything more than cash grabs.
Dedpool - 3/30/2012, 8:26 AM
Definitely wanted Johnston back, but who knows, it's not like he makes lots and lots of movies. Nolfii would be the best choice out of that list.
CoLest - 3/30/2012, 8:29 AM
Why "naturally"? Is it a joke or is there something I missed?
