Movies.com have posted a great article detailing why they felt Bryan Singer's Superman Returns never spawned a follow up movie. They weigh in on the positives and negatives of the film, and discuss the reasons it failed to connect with many fans. They also reveal a few "what might have been" details in regards to the sequel that never was. It seems much of it is just rumor, but it's still interesting to find out what direction Warner Bros. might have taken things..

According to rumors, the sequel would have centered around Brainiac using a version similar to Superman: The Animated Series from 1996 where he was originally from Krypton. He would have followed Superman back to Earth from the remnants of Krypton during his five year trip. There were further rumors that the bank robber who shot Superman in the eye around the middle of the film would turn out to be John Corben, a.k.a. Metallo for the sequel. There was another rumored mandate from Warner Brothers to make the film darker than previous incarnations. That thought worried many fans who understood that Superman needs to be a symbol for hope. With that in mind, our expectation was that the world he inhabited could be darker, but that he would be the beacon of light in the middle of it.

Darker, more action, Brainiac. All welcome addition in my opinion. Although I agree with the author that Superman Returns is quite a bit better than many give it credit for anyway. If certain elements were added/altered, how would you guys have felt about a direct sequel to Returns? Do you think Singer deserved another go as director? Would you have accepted Brandon Routh in the title role again? Sound off in the usual place, and be sure to click on the link below to check out the entire article, it's a good read.

as much as I was 50/50 about Superman Returns it was an incredible homage to the original the rumors I read here seem to work in theory Id prolly would have like to have seen how this would look especially since Supes has faced some tough days, we all remember his long walk
jazzman - 3/30/2012, 4:02 PM
its too late now so Bryan Singer needs to get over it and move on.

also Superman Returns was not a reboot the movie was ment to be part of Donner Superman movie. they should of done a complete reboot but WB didnt.
MrReese - 3/30/2012, 4:03 PM
Ive said it b4 n I'll say it again.[frick] U Routh!!!! XD (I really hated that movie lmao)

thanos83 - 3/30/2012, 4:06 PM
Nice,,ad to the rumors that braniac had a ship with millions of spare clone bodies that he could download his consciousness into at will into,
also:

that New Krypton grew into a new planet within the solar system

-superman being forced to kill his son due to him being possesd by Braniac(awesome.. would have killed to see that..and i hated superman returns
thanos83 - 3/30/2012, 4:07 PM
this sounds like it should have been the story for superman returns
soberchimera - 3/30/2012, 4:11 PM
The only problem I had with Returns was there was no physical threat to Superman. If Lex Luthor had Metallo, Parasite, or Bizarro working as his henchman then the movie would have been a lot less boring.
zachshivey - 3/30/2012, 4:13 PM
I wish we could see a live action doomsday movie
jazzman - 3/30/2012, 4:15 PM
@PatientZero

he was just a Reeves look-a-like thats all
TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 3/30/2012, 4:18 PM
why are people still talking about this?
the movie was ok at best, and we only got to see Superman toss a giant rock into space
this new reboot is what the franchise needs
BIGBMH - 3/30/2012, 4:28 PM
Smallville kind of took care of my desire to see Brainiac as Kryptonian crystal technolgy. I think he works better as more traditional sci-fi tech.
Giraffehead - 3/30/2012, 4:35 PM
I thought Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was great, he was the right kind of crazy to be a villain. And I really liked Routh as Superman.

The problem was Lois Lane, her boyfriend and son... terrible Singer.
drfate - 3/30/2012, 4:40 PM
Bryan Singer is a hack. Superman and X men went in the wrong directions. Superman Returns was wall to wall contradictions, ruined plot points, and ultimately just sucked balls. The Lois/Superman "romance" was ruined by that horrible actress and the fact that Singer made Supes a dead beat peeping Tom. I mean, by the end of the movie, you're rooting for Marsdens character to "get the girl" He was too likeable to even want to see Clark and Lois hook back up.

Don't get me started on X Men; all I have to point out is that TOAD whooped STORM'S ass?!?!?

Singer: go direct diaper commercials cuz yo stuff is s#it
cyclopstb - 3/30/2012, 4:51 PM
I really don't mind if Metallo or Brainiac became the new villains. But I really want to see Superman go to Red Kryptonite mode and get revenge on Lex Luthor.
nerdman81 - 3/30/2012, 5:00 PM
If they had done something like this instead of the Donner jerk off session, it would've been much better! The massive number of fails that came from that garbage Superman Returns abortion were far too great to make it anywhere near good! Those who say that "it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be" crap are kidding themselves! I don't think it got enough of the hatred it deserved!!
ralfinader - 3/30/2012, 5:00 PM
I don't think Returns flat out sucked, but the disappointment at the 'could've beens' and 'shoulda beens' and the 'oh no you didn'ts' definately weighed down my overall opinion of it.

@DrFate - yeah, Singer drops the ball alot (ALOT!!!) in the X-Men flicks and Returns. The Toad's whooping of Storm was a very pitiful moment, almost as pitiful as her stupid question when she gets her 3 second revenge on him...It is sad that Brett Ratner directed the best Storm action in that trilogy.
NextHero08 - 3/30/2012, 5:04 PM
Better than the emo Superman we have now and ANOTHER Zod incarnation. Bout time Braniac was thrown n the mix but no, too many people with sticks up their asses.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:10 PM
Perhaps we would have seen Superman throw a punch in the sequel?
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:11 PM
@NextHero08

If anything Singer's superman was incredibly emo. Seriously how is this emo?

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:11 PM
And by another Zod incarnation you mean a villain that hasn't seen screen time in over 30 years?
ralfinader - 3/30/2012, 5:22 PM
@nexthero - I am having trouble seeing the Cavill Supes as emo. Dude looks pumped and pissed in alot of the pics I have seen. Hoping Snyder knocks MoS out of the park!

@RidiculousFanBoyDemands - Seriously, did even make a fist in Returns? I don't think he did... At least we know Snyder is all about fight choreaography (yeah, eff spelling), and Cavill will get to punch on some fellow Kryptonians.
DoomXfactor - 3/30/2012, 5:23 PM
Superman Returns sucked. NUFF SAID!
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:24 PM
I agree what killed this film was the love letter to Donnor. I never really dug the Donnor films that much. There were some excellent moments, but they were just too cheesy and better left in the late 70's early 80's. Singer had the chance to revamp the character and chose to make the Superman movie he wanted. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't great. Plus again, Superman didn't fight anyone!
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:27 PM
@BaneKill

By emo I mean overly emotional. There was way too much going on in that movie, and the most emo moment was when Superman stalked Lois Lane at her house. The movie tried to hard to tug on our heart strings and make us feel sorry for Superman that it failed to tell a creative story, with any action.
mgeoff88 - 3/30/2012, 5:28 PM
That's what Superman Returns should have been. The movie would've turned out much, much better.

They should've brought in Brainiac, instead of bringing in Lex Luthor for the umpteenth time.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:37 PM
@Mgeoff88

I wouldn't mind them bringing Lex Luthor back, I just want him done right! I don't want him to be a real estate scam artist. Seriously all he had was real estate scam after real estate scam. A more sinister, diabolical and more important intellectual Lex needs to grace the screen. He needs to be mentally superior to Superman, and very cold and calculated. I would rather see Lex done right before Braniac. Perhaps Lex and Metallo can be in the next one with a Doomsday esque character.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 5:38 PM
Plus Kevin Smith brought up an amazing point during his stand up routine. Superman Returns was a direct sequel from Superman 2, where Superman gave Lois that dumb mind erasing kiss. Umm wouldn't the first words out of Lois's mouth towards Superman in Returns be "When did you rape me Superman?"
GUNSMITH - 3/30/2012, 5:38 PM
SUPERMAN RETURNS WAS BORING AND WAY TO NOSTALGIC DRENCHED IN EMOTIONAL WISH WASH..SNYDER WILL BRING IT HOME.
ManofSteel23 - 3/30/2012, 5:41 PM
This is old news, what I read aaaaages ago was brainiac would go into the body of his son and then supes would have to kill his son? or something along those lines

revloveR - 3/30/2012, 5:57 PM
shoulda been brainiac in the [frick]ing first place.
SLK - 3/30/2012, 6:02 PM
Brandon Routh IS Superman! Big, tall, radiating pacified power, just as Christopher Reeve was.

Cavill is a shitty choice, he looks like a model or a cover man, but that is not enough for Superman. That's why they put these fake muscles under his suit - he is just so ordinary and small, despite that he is kind of fit.

The perfect option would be Snyder directing "Man of Steel" with Brandon, but unfortunately, but unfortunately it's just a dream.
xXkryptoniteXx - 3/30/2012, 6:03 PM
Sounds cool and yes people backlash it but it was a good movie, the pacing was there the story was there and the effects too. The only thing it didn't have was action but it's a stepping stone for part two and we all know singer's xmen 1 to x2, I remember Kevin smith said the same thing and i agree. Also this superman is not the superman everyone wanted, Chris reeve as superman is classic and his that superman ad I don't want to be connected to that, only when I watch the old ones. I want the new take on superman, I would have been open for the next sequel to superman returns but we got man of steel so I'm fine with that.

We could have gotten Tim Burton's superman, whoa we dodge a bullet of that and I'm glad we got superman returns. Why can't WB animation do superman returns sequel instead of there usual route on there animation. Get Brandon routh as the voice actor for superman, also jimmy and Lois. That would be brilliant. DC Animation of Superman returns. Wow that would be sweet. This way we "superman fans" would be interested in this take and also put some closure for the fans for superman returns. Just get singer to pitch his story or of he wants too much money because of DC animations budget, I'll be happy with there own Bruce timm to do it.

Bruce timm and the other DC animation staff will have that as a challenge to them and a fresh take to there usual route on DC animation. I believe its brilliant. It's easy to get Brandon routh for the voice for the lead and also jimmy as well.
titansupes - 3/30/2012, 6:15 PM
The plot in the article seems fake. It's EXACTLY the plot that every fanboy (including the eye-shooting thug from Superman Returns) suggested as the sequel. Routh himself was talking about how the world should be darker with Superman being the beacon of hope.

The writers of Superman Returns already revealed the plot of the abandoned sequel, which involved an alien Brainiac disguised as a Zod like character who evenually inhabits Jason and forces Superman to kill him. Superman being forced to murder his own son? Yeah. Pretty much confirms that these guys had no clue how to do a Superman movie.

Oh, and it was never called The Man of Steel, it was called Superman Unleashed.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/30/2012, 6:19 PM
Brandon Routh did a great Christopher Reeves impersonation, that is all. That is the only reason he was cast in that film. He is not a horrible actor but he is not a great actor, and didn't make a great Superman. He did however make a great Christopher Reeves substitute.

@SLK

I'm going to assume your being facetious when you say Henry Cavil's suit is padded and Routh was bigger. Just refer to the pic above. Then refer to these. Routh wasn't small but he looks nowhere near as powerful as Cavil. Cavil looks like he would kick Routh's ass in a matter of seconds. Plus like I said I don't know if Brandon Routh's Superman could even throw a punch.

lightningfilms - 3/30/2012, 6:20 PM
Brandon Routh didn't Look like Chris Reeve (which Bryan Singer wanted) and he was WAY to skinny to be Superman, The Super Kid was Horrible. and Bryans Singer didnt direct Routh at all!! he was basically, "be like chris reeves, be like chris reeves" the only time i got to see Routh act (which he can) was at the end when he embodied his own superman when he was talking to the Kid as he slept.I think the movie would have stood on its own if singer didnt try to make it part of the Donner franchise and he let Routh be his own Superman. Instead he wanted Routh to fill the boots of Mr. Chris Reeve, which CAN'T be done.
lightningfilms - 3/30/2012, 6:25 PM
Brandon Routh didn't look like Christoper Reeve

In My Opinion Tom Welling look more like Christopher Reeves (if they wanted to cast someone who looked like him) but they should have casted for someone who looks like Superman not someone who played Superman before.

Superman Returns was well made and not a bad movie, but it was a sequel to the Salkind/Donner movies, 20+ years later. It was the movie Bryan Singer wanted but not really what the rest of us wanted. The casting was a bit off. Somehow Rouths Superman seemed like a rookie and he never quite seemed like he had the total confidence of a Superman and the viewer never had faith in him either. As for the new Superman, we have yet another retelling of the same story. Since '78, we've had 4 different Supermen, in 3 different versions. 1 Clark Kent(Smallville), 2 Superboys and an animated series. Though the next film could be good, I'm getting tired of seeing the same story simply retold. We need something new.
Fogs - 3/30/2012, 6:46 PM
Too bad Returns was such a FÜCKING BORING MOVIE!

Now it's too late.
