It seems Lionsgate have begun a frantic search for a replacement director for the sequel to The Hunger Games, "Catching Fire", now that Gary Ross has decided not to helm the project. The LA Times report that the studio are looking to begin shooting by August, and have gathered together a list of directors to the top of their wishlist. Apparently there are seven in total, but only three are revealed here..

David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

Film buffs will be very familiar with all three names I'm sure. Inarritu specializes in brilliant but bleak dramas such as 21 Grams, Babel and most recently Biutiful. Cuaron helmed what many consider to be the best in the Harry Potter series, "The Prisoner Of Azkhaban", and also the excellent Children Of Men. And Cronenberg shouldn't need an introduction to anyone. The Canadian legend has directed some truly brilliant and influential movies including The Fly, Scanners, Dead Ringers, Crash, The Dead Zone, Naked Lunch and more recently A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method.

According to the site..

Any of the three men would be a reassuring choice for fans and Collins. And all three auteurs could have compelling takes on the material. Other names are sure to rise to the surface, but Cronenberg, Inarritu and Cuaron should give fans some reassurance that Lionsgate is doing its best to try to preserve their beloved franchise.

Indeed. I'm not sure they could aim any higher in fact. Out of these three, who has your vote?

All great choices. Though I would love to see Cuaron directing this one.

Cron? Wow, so not a name I expected to see pop up. Only David Lynch would have caught me more off guard.

Cuaron, please! He'd do a fantastic job. I'm so excited for Gravity.

What, no Schumacher?

I don't think Cronnenberg fits this property. I just don't think it would work. Same could really be said for Inarritu. Cuaron to me would be the best fit of the 3.

I was hoping Marc Webb would be on that list.

I like Cronnenberg, he'll be able to put that exta edge of violence on it
Brady1138 - 4/12/2012, 2:35 PM
Cronenberg or Cuaron have my vote. Who's that other guy?
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/12/2012, 3:11 PM
All great choices yes.
Cuaron and Inarritu are most believable choices.

Cronenberg has always just seemed like a guy who likes to do his own projects.
If he doesnt get free hands with the sequel i doubt he takes the job.

It would be awesome to see him helm it thou. But right now Cuaron would be my number one choice.

Cronenberg has started to work outside of his comfort zone recently, A Dangerous Method isn't like anything he has done before..I think he might go for this if he's looking to stretch himself even further.

Could be...
Which reminds me i have to check that movie out. Still havent seen it.

Three great choices here, but I'm leaning more towards Cuaron and Cronenberg.

Cronenberg, when given good source material created by someone else, usually does a good job reigning in his insanity, so that just enough leaks through to leave his mark and make a good film. For example, The Fly and History of Violence. As such, I don't think he would be a terrible choice for this property.

Now, when Cronenberg directs his own stuff I will never pay money to see it because the guy is just a nutjob and writting and directing multiply that nuttyness and get you a film that doesn't make sense.

Cronenberg doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would lower himself to doing a mere sequel.

But who knows.
