New Look At Johnny Depp As Tonto In THE LONE RANGER

A second pic of the actor in his Tonto get-up, this time posing with a fan on the set of the movie, has appeared online. Fans that were freaking out over his appearance in the first pic we saw can rest easy, he's crow-less here!..

Badass Digest (in case you missed the watermark) came across this pic of Johnny Depp posing for a picture with a fan on the set of The Lone Ranger. As you can see he looks a bit different from the previous official image we saw, due largely to the fact that he doesn't have a dead bird on his head. Although that was in keeping with how the Native American Crow tribe would sometimes dress, it seemed to irk a lot of fans. Well, those worried about being distracted by Tonto's head-bird can relax, if this pic is anything to go by he won't be walking around like that for the whole movie at least..



Left for dead in an ambush with five other Texas Rangers, lawman John Reid (Armie Hammer) survives and is nursed back to health by an Indian scout named Tonto (Johnny Depp). He then dons a mask to avenge the murders of his comrades and to foil evildoers, never accepting payment for his services. His gratis vigilantism is made possible by the silver mine he inherits from his slain brothers - the same mine that affords him his endless supply of trademark silver bullets.



The Lone Ranger hits theaters May 31, 2013. The film stars Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto. Also starring in the movie: Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper and Timothy Hutton.

@pyrodude93 - the first time i saw that pic i thought the bird was part of the costume (only for a second tho!...it was a pretty funny second)

@PatientZero He was a big reason the film was greenlit. Also he seems to take pride in his Native American heritage. This isn't the first time he's played a Native American (the Brave with Marlon Brando) and Dead Man was pretty well known for staying relatively faithful to Native American culture. I'm not going to speculate on just how much of Depp's heritage is Native American because I don't want to be "that guy".

Tonto wasn't a Crow indian, so of course fans would be irked.

Don't know why they keep having his face painted white, unless they are just catching him for photos when he is shooting isolated scenes. I certainly hope they don't have is face painted for most the film. I'm irked enough that Depp was cast as Tonto.

Ranger, no he was supposed to be a Potawatomi, who actually never came from any of the Southwestern states were the story was set so in many ways it's more realistic to have him as a Crow. Either way, does it really make a lick of frackin difference? There were Native Americans that wore crows on their heads and they made Tonto one of those fore this movie. Just more unwarranted fanboy whinging as far as I'm concerned.

I'm cool with him wearing it, but not through the whole movie, you know?

I just think that shit would get distracting after awhile lol

Ror@I was just going to post that they very well could have rewritten his origin to make him a Crow. I grew up in Montana, so I am very familiar with the Crow history and lore. It would have been just as easy to have him as a Potawatomi, which are from the Great Lakes, as it would be to make him a Crow. To call my opinion unwarranted is the same as me calling your opinion unwarranted. Your whining about my opinion. Too bad. These forums are about stating our opinions.

I have more of an issue if he has his face painted too much in the film. If he is trying to pay homage to Native Americans and depict them in a non-stereotypical way, they best not have his face painted too much as it was not an everyday practice.

Johnny Depp happens to have Cherokee in his family tree. So, he is part Native American. I think some people are upset that he doesn't look like what people project as their image of Native American. He's a great actor who happens to be Native American that's why he is playing the role. He brings in money, and fills out the role as well. There are many various diverse people who are Native American. Tonto was kind of a stereotype to begin with, so at least Johnny Depp will make sure and stand behind a role he knows won't stereotype Amerindians.

Ranger, not your opinion..just the whining we heard from people after the first pic. Your opinion is that they could have kept him Potawatomi, but they didn't. To me that's not something to get into a tizzy over, if you think it is fine..my opinion is that it's unwarranted. But who I was really talking about are the people who practically had a fit after the first pic because they were ignorant of the fact that there was a tribe that wore the birds on their head, and then when it was pointed out to them they were all.."Yeah..well..he still looks stupid, should have kept him all Village People!"

...and that does not make him Native American. It means he as a little Native American in him. My great-great grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee. My nationality would never be considered Native American. I simply have some Native American blood in me, just like Depp has.

Wearing that paint on his face can mean that they could be going down the stereotypical role. Like I said, I will wait to see how much they depict that in the film, but if he is a Crow Indian, they only wore that paint for war paint or religious ceremonies. Sometimes festive activities. Native Americans consider being depicted in war paint as being a negative stereotype.

Ror@ Fair enough. Like I said, I am more annoyed about having Depp cast as Tonto and the possible use of the face paint depending on how often they use it. Too premature to tell, but we have seen two out of two images with different looks both using face paint. Time will tell on that one.

Why does Depp look like "Pirates of the Caribbean meets the Old West"? At least he looks less like Lil Wayne in this picture.

Know what's great about this whole thing? he's posing with a Native American fan surrounded by other Native Americans and I don't see on sign saying Johnny is miscast.

AlSimmons: Yeah but Norse Gods and Shield Agents are fictional, so in that case I agree, race should not matter when creating or casting a character.

Tonto is fictional but Native Amercans are not. They did not decide to make Tonto a white person for this movie, Tonto is still Native American but being played by a white guy. That to me is the issue, they could have cast an actual Native American actor but it's Hollywood so they cast a big star instead. It's not the first time.

So I guess the next thing will be Robinson Crusoe with Friday being played by Matt Damon in blackface, why not?

Why do they change everything ? Tonto looks like Alice cooper . Why is the lone Ranger in black ? It's supposed to be fun not a tragedy .
