Robert Downey JR. Talks IRON MAN 3; Comments On Possibly Being Replaced In Future Movies

While chatting to MTV, the man who has played Tony Stark so memorably in 3 movies now responds to Kevin Feige's comments about other actors playing the role after him. He also talks about Iron Man 3 and the great cast being assembled for it..

Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige recently likened the character of Tony Stark/Iron Man to James Bond, and revealed that when Robert Downey Jr. decides to hang up the helmet, a new actor would step into the role. Last night at the Tribeca Film Festival MTV caught up with RDJ, who responded (half jokingly) to this, and also commented on how the production is going on Iron Man 3..

"I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes. I wonder who's playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you're here to tell me? I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while. As usual in my book, it's all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of reaction to. If they keep doing that, maybe I'll keep showing up."

A few great actors are said to be joining the cast of the threequel, though none have actually been officially confirmed by Marvel/Disney yet. When asked about the likes of Sir Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain potentially coming aboard, Downey said that he could not wait to work with "any or all of them."..

"It's funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion. 'Iron Man 3' is really shaping up to be something special. We start in a couple weeks. I'm sure I'll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead."

Actually the rumor is that filming has begun in Wilmington, North Carolina. Downey Jr. was spotted in the area, and word is that the cameras are already rolling. Unconfirmed for now of course, but we will update with any new info.

Let's hope the guy is playing Stark for many years to come.
Ha1frican - 4/29/2012, 3:13 PM
Just use CG to keep him young ala Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy or Bradd Pitt in Benjamin Button, by the time it's needed the tech should be up to par for it to be seemless. NO RECAST! He IS Tony.
AC1 - 4/29/2012, 3:14 PM
Great news to hear that RDJ doesn't want anyone taking over the role, so what if he's aging? He could keep playing Tony Stark for many years, and all the action shots of Iron Man can be created through motion capture on a stunt actor. Then RDJ does the voice over, the HUD shots, the shots where the helmet is off/open, and all the Tony stuff. I really can't see anyone else in the role.
AC1 - 4/29/2012, 3:17 PM
And yeah, I second both @jimoakley666's and Ha1frican's comments, the rate at which movie tech is evolving now, de-aging him shouldn't be a problem. I mean, look at how realistic Hulk looks in Avengers compared to Incredible Hulk - getting rid of a couple wrinkles in like 10 years should be a piece of cake compared to that! Here's hoping RDJ continues to own this role for the foreseeable future!
Gerrit - 4/29/2012, 3:26 PM
Yes!!! RDJ, if someone says that you need to stop playing Tony, just tell them to [frick] of.
RDJ IS Tony Stark and always will be.
clogan - 4/29/2012, 3:36 PM
He'll be playing Tony Stark for 10 more years, no rush. (:
blvdnoise - 4/29/2012, 3:41 PM
8 at the very least..
Gutts81 - 4/29/2012, 3:42 PM
Funny as hell!
0ptimusCrime - 4/29/2012, 3:43 PM
yeaah....nooo
RDJ is Ironman
dont change it.

tazmaniak - 4/29/2012, 3:45 PM
The problem with keeping the same actor for too long is that they've created a shared universe. Clearly other actors are going to age out of their roles. How many more years can Evans, Hemsworth, Johansson and Renner play these characters? Especially Evans and Hemsworth. I doubt their characters age like a regular human would. You'd have to recast by the time they are 40. But how would it look in 10 years if you have recasted 30 year olds playing Cap and Thor, but still have RDJ playing Tony in his late 50s? Where's the continuity?
thewonderer - 4/29/2012, 3:49 PM
You know it was actually very rude for Feige to say what he did.

I mean imagine how as an actor you would feel if the guy in charge was talking about replacing you when your no use to him anymore?

Long live RDJs youth and vitality!
ComicReader - 4/29/2012, 3:49 PM
RDJ was born to play Tony Stark. Why would anyone even think of replacing him?!
OverlyManlyMan - 4/29/2012, 3:50 PM
You can play Tony Stark as long as you what Mr. Downey. Glad to have someone so talented in the shoes of my favorite superhero!

:D
TheMyth - 4/29/2012, 3:51 PM
He'll be able to play Tony til he's nearly 60. I don't mind if he plays Stark in Avengers 3 with graying hair. Eventually they will have to recast all of them, and it'll be a sad day for each one, but it'll be a long time yet before that has to happen.
nowtheresaBATman - 4/29/2012, 3:55 PM
the world willcome to an end before they'll have to recast any of them haha
Asterisk - 4/29/2012, 3:59 PM
I love him in the role, and can't imagine anyone else. He will get older, but...so will Tony Stark.
The14thAvenger - 4/29/2012, 4:00 PM
youtube version please?
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/29/2012, 4:02 PM
Yeah no more Tony Stark after RDJ quites! There isnt anyone who can fill his shoes!
I would love to see him play Tony at least in two or three Iron Man movies after the third one!
Make it a saga!:)
MatchesMalone1989 - 4/29/2012, 4:02 PM
He'll be the best Tony Stark. But come on guys if what you are all stating is true Sean Connery would be still be Bond....
thewonderer - 4/29/2012, 4:14 PM
@PatientZero

Nic Cage as Ghost Rider? LOLOL I kid

I'd say Chris Evans and Hemsworth nailed their characters.

Heath Ledger definitely did too. Christian Bale is amazing as Batman but I can't say for sure someone else wouldn't also be great.
marvelstudios - 4/29/2012, 4:19 PM
when kevin feige said that they will go the Bond route with iron man, im pretty sure he was saying IF rdj leaves or gets too old we'll get another actor and not reboot. rdj has at least another 3-5 movies left and who knows maybe iron man wont be appealing in 10 years and marvel decides to kill him off
CorndogBurglar - 4/29/2012, 4:23 PM
Christian bale's voice makea him a terrible Batman in my book, but I get what your saying. there has yet to be an actor that nailed Bruce Wayne/Batman the way rdj has nailed stark.

Thata a lot of naing going around!
thewonderer - 4/29/2012, 4:25 PM
@marvelstudios

I think Marvel should only keep on doing this MCU until at most Avengers 4 but probably best at Avengers 3. Heres my plan for it:

IM3
Cap 2
Thor 2
(Either Thor 3 or Cap 3 because I don't like the fact that Iron man goes his own sequel before Avengers and these guys didn't)
Whatever other superheroes: Ant-Man and Dr. Strange?

Avengers 2

IM4
Cap 3 or 4 depending on whichever got the sequel last time
Thor 3 or 4 depending on whichever got the sequel last time
(Either Thor 3 or Cap 3 depending on whichever got the sequel last time)
Whatever other superheroes: Luke Cage and Quicksilver?

Avengers 3

I feel it should end there and then maybe just reboot the MCU all together with better planning and whatnot
thewonderer - 4/29/2012, 4:27 PM
@Corndog

Bales voice isn't bad. Its been exaggerated WAY WAY beyond how little of a nuisance it is. Someone whose cool hated on it and now everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

Either way, Bale nails Batman and Wayne in literally every other aspect so how does 1 wrong next to 99 positives make him a terrible Batman? RDJ has his flaws as Iron Man as well. I don't buy he's this genius at times with all the stupid things he does.

WingDingaLing - 4/29/2012, 4:29 PM
@thewonderer

You have great point!!
nowtheresaBATman - 4/29/2012, 4:33 PM
@thewonderer I 2nd that point. I've always thought Ryan Gosling could be just as good of a Batman/Wayne as Bale...he looks like him too.
TheMyth - 4/29/2012, 4:41 PM
thewonderer, you're suggesting that a genius level intellect means you must be completely stable, emotionally, socially, financially, etc. Have you ever met a genius? They tend to be somewhat insane, and not entirely productive either. I would go so far as to speculate that genius intellects have severe generalized anxiety and ADHD, and have little care for the social conventions of us stupid people.
MrSuperheromoviefan - 4/29/2012, 4:43 PM
as long as he can keep act he is iron man
BackwardGalaxy - 4/29/2012, 4:43 PM
He can play Iron Man as long as he wants as far as I'm concerned.
MetropolisMarvel - 4/29/2012, 4:47 PM
Chris Pine.
thewonderer - 4/29/2012, 4:53 PM
@Esse

I'm not saying all the stupid things he does doesn't fit the character. I'm saying some.

Like good god was that party scene in IM2 terrible. Do you know theres a scene where Iron Man actually roars at the people in his house. The Rhodey/IM fight was very cool, but that whole party scene before was just stupid. Why would IM roar?

jackdawak - 4/29/2012, 4:59 PM
I love how RDJ talks to the interviewer by using the side of his body rather than looking at him...he just wants to gtf out...hes too cool to handle himself...ego maniac
Asterisk - 4/29/2012, 5:04 PM
Oh yeah...Why do people hate IM2 so much? I thought it was the best pre-Avengers MCU movie (excluding maybe IM1). It just felt like a comic book story to me. And it had some great ideas, like the Stark Expo.
Asterisk - 4/29/2012, 5:06 PM
And I've never had any problems with Bale's Batman voice. I mean, it could be better (see Michael Keaton a.k.a. best Live Action Batman) but when I first saw TDK, I didn't even notice.
InFamouslyCool - 4/29/2012, 5:11 PM
i want to watch the avengers.. must resist!
2gold - 4/29/2012, 5:12 PM
Party Scene actually made sense from the standpoint of, Tony was dying. He knew he was dying. Even Rhodes (or someone, have to rewatch them starting tonight) made the point that it was all a show, he wanted Rhodes to take Iron Man but he didn't want anyone to know he just gave it up. He wanted it to seen like Rhodes had no choice. So get stupid at the party, act completely over the top and unstable and Rhodes takes the suit away. He always has a method or reason for his madness, just hard to look past his madness sometimes.
cypher - 4/29/2012, 5:13 PM
@thewonderer probly because jesus juice does that to use, even smart people. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure tony was a alchoholic in the funnies. But what do I know, I've only been readin comics since '88.
xStarLordx - 4/29/2012, 5:15 PM
No replace RDJ. That a no no.
thewonderer - 4/29/2012, 5:20 PM
@Asterick

Keaton is far from best Batman, I'd actually call him one of the worst. Reasons:

1. He's a dwarf
2. He whispers like a pansy
3. He KILLS, KILLS
4. He shows zero emotion as Wayne
5. He Kills
6. Alfred and him have zero chemistry

Now lets compare that with Bale

1. Amazing actor able to be very different at any moment.
2. Very one dimensional and thus fierce as Batman
3. The Caine chemistry is beyond amazing
4. Actually utilizes darkness
5. Uses a ton of cool Bat techniques and moves
6. Best of all, DOESN'T KILL
7. Has a voice that actually makes sense as a disguise

@Ramon

Not once have I ever found a problem before the voice before I went online and saw some popular youtuber insulting it.

lol I actually find Bale better than Conroy but I'm sure thats widely against. Conroy is cocky and while his Batman is good, he's too overconfident. His Batman has zero inflection to it. Its boring.

Really? zero emotion?

He showed a ton of charisma when with Dent being all snobby. Every time he was with Alfred, the emotions were spot on. Funny, Depressed, Confused. The reason Bale didn't show too emotion is because he's kind of in a situation. Hes obviously not going to be happy when he's losing the girl he loves, is hated by the city, and is responsible for a ton of deaths.
dirtygymsocks - 4/29/2012, 5:23 PM
I hate when they ask stupid questions like this! Let these guys make as many movies as they can until the physically cant anymore, and when that time comes we have a different actor.
