Samuel L. Jackson Slams NY Times Critic Who Gave THE AVENGERS A Bad Review

The man who plays Nick Fury in the Marvel Movie Universe took to Twitter to express his anger at a scathing write up for The Avengers from New York Times critic AO Scott..

As we all know, reviews and opinions on movies - and anything else for that matter - are completely subjective. But that doesn't stop fans lashing out when they see one they don't like. Now there's nothing wrong with a bit of friendly (or heated) debate on the issue if you disagree of course, but at what point does it go too far? Sam Jackson Tweeted the following after NY Times critic AO Scott's negative review of The Avengers..



"#Avengers fans, NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let's help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!"


Harsh? Well, have a read of some of the things Scott said about the film and then make up your mind..

"While The Avengers is hardly worth raging about, its failures are significant and dispiriting. The light, amusing bits cannot overcome the grinding, hectic emptiness, the bloated cynicism that is less a shortcoming of this particular film than a feature of the genre."


He praises some elements too, and to be honest the entire review is pretty well written even if you don't agree with the content - but he only mentions the great performances in passing, and focuses entirely too much on the negative aspects without acknowledging enough of the positives in my opinion. But that's just my take, what do you guys think? Is Jackson out of line for slamming the guy for giving his opinion? Or is this review leaving him wide open for criticism?

Come on this is a little unfair. No matter how good a movie is (I enjoyed the movie) You can never please everyone, and as long as he had given reasons for his opinion we can't have a go at anyone for it.

Good for SLJ, I just read the review and while it starts off reasonably Scott eventually goes on to say that anyone who enjoyed the film must be some mindless drone with no sense of true film taste.

What sucks about every critic who has had a negative review of the Avengers is they don't hate on it for it's short-comings. They hate on it because it's a CBM and they hate the genre. That's a fact!

I hate people who hide behind thinly veiled intelligence, and that is exactly what this reviewer attempts. I mean, this guy gets so into the slamming he seems like he's trying to be poetic about it.

Newsflash people, this has happened for years.

Look at Batman Begins and TDK rotten tomatoes. Not saying those films are completely perfect in every way...but i'd say at least half of the bad reviews on each are plain retarded.

This has happened and will continue to happen. Grow up and stop being mad about out.

as a huge marvel fan this critic can suck my hairy arse, avengers is the best comic book action movie ever, its playing on my mind so much and i keep listening to the soundtrack because the music is as amazing as the movie, AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!. that was my review and let it be the only one worth reading

Nomis that is the greatest Gif I have ever seen. Also, This guy looks like he trashed the movie JUST so he would get attention. Good Job Sam Jackson for giving him what he wanted. He threw out a lot of big words with the hop that it would make him seem more legit in the eyes of people everywhere. I hope he fails and gets fired.....because I want his job!

I didn't like The Avengers. I now have friends who won't talk to me because of that. Sorry to say but as good as you think it might be, nothing in this world is loved by everyone. Gambits need to grow the [frick] up and Jackson needs to realize that his tough mother [frick]er persona isn't a license to act like god.

@ACira: The fact that the review insulted fans isn't what SLJ was complaining about. Samuel was just complaining about the guy giving The Avengers a good review. They were both being douches.

Any reviewer who tries to connect the Transformer franchise to ANY movie because of good CG and action should be hanged by the neck until dead.

Seriously though, check out the RT reviews. Literally every rotten review is being slammed with 50+ comments hating on the reviewer, while all the fresh reviews have zero comments, lol!

SLJ really loved this movie and he really loves comics, he even purchased alot of set pieces from this movie. This writer talks about anyone who loves this comic type genre is a mindless drone.

So he is basically saying SLJ is dumb. SLJ slaps back with his comments, its all fair game.

Whats messed up is, this guys seems like he just doesnt like super heroes or anything related "Hawkeye he shoots alot of arrows." Or "Aliens with with armor come out of a big whole".

He seems to just hate and not understand the mythology of super heroes. My question is why review something you dont like or understand? Hes entitled to his opinion but he just seems like an asshole.

I didn't find what Sam said harsh. The critic shared his opinion about the movie and Sam shared his about the critic. If you found that harsh you should have seen the comment section from that bad Avengers review article.

Well, he's right! The Avengers is a great action movie and has the quality of being the first real superhero team movie (X-Men an FF don't count)and that's it!

Although all the action and superhero orgasm, there is no substance in the script to put it on the level of The Dark Knight, for example.

Very popcorn, pure escapism and no ambitious of being something more - that's why I loved it!!!

Fcuk this guys opinion! Those defending him haven't read his review obviously. He basically comes out and calls all of us mindless trogs. "The price of admission is obedience." And throughout the review he is seeking political agenda throughout the film and attacking what he views as a conformity. "...new studio overlords, the Walt Disney Company." This guy is not worthy of sniffing Gusto's smeg.

it was to be expected. "smart" critics that are going to give it a bad review just because it is a comic book movie. most critics, and most fans like it, that´s all that matters.....
