Thor's "He's Adopted" Joke In THE AVENGERS Comes Under Fire

As we know, some people are just looking for an excuse to hop up on their high horse, and apparently they found it in Marvel's The Avengers. Have a look at a particularly silly response..

I'm sure we all remember Thor's response to Black Window informing him that his brother Loki had killed a whole bunch of people in The Avengers. The God Of Thunder replies - "he's adopted". Funny yes? Well, not everyone thought so. See, apparently this was seen as an attack on adopted people, because if Loki is evil, and Thor said he's adopted, that must mean he is implying..all adopted people are evil! Umm, no.

Quite a few organizations and outlets have made it very clear that they have no idea how to put things in perspective, and were quick to express their outrage at such an insensitive attempt at humor! But one article in particular just took stupidity to a whole new level and prompted me to write up this response. In an piece entitled "The Avengers attack on adopted children is mean and unfunny", Andrea Poe of The Washington Times suggests that thousands of adopted kids the world over have been horribly scarred by the line, and writes..

The hope now is, of course, that enough media attention has been brought to this unfortunate episode in this blockbuster movie that such blatant ignorance and bias won’t turn up again. Sadly, that hope is unlikely to match reality anytime soon. Far more likely, this line is likely to be joined by many other offensive, stupid, callous jokes in future. Hollywood has increasingly become a place filled with writers who are insulated and isolated from mainstream America and who find sophomoric bullying humor that wouldn’t be tolerated in a middle school as a pathetic excuse for a career.

But that's nothing, here's the best part..

I like to do something I call “the substitution game,” whereby if I want to check whether or not a line is acceptable I simple swap out whatever word I have questions about with either the words “Jewish” or “African American.” If the line sits well using both of these, the line passes the test. So let’s try that here to find out if people would think the line was so funny if these words were used instead of “adopted.”

So here we go:

The Black Widow character says, "[Loki] killed 80 people in two days." Then Thor, Loki's brother, replies, "He's Jewish."

Ugh…awkward, isn’t it? Doesn’t seem quite so funny.

OK, let’s try again:

The Black Widow character says, "[Loki] killed 80 people in two days." Then Thor, Loki's brother, replies, "He's African American."

Thud. Not funny, right?

Actually Miss Poe, it's hilarious. Don't you understand that Thor's reason for coming out with the line "he's adopted" was to distance himself from the evil Loki had perpetrated? It had nothing to do with the character BEING adopted, nor was he implying that he was evil BECAUSE he was adopted. How the Hell is that the same as substituting the word for "Jewish"? Would Loki being Jewish mean that Thor wouldn't have to bare the shame of being blood-related to such an wicked man? No, it wouldn't. I'll play devil's advocate here and admit that a very young child might not understand the context of the scene, and perhaps might be confused about the exchange, essentially not "getting the joke". But I'd argue that a child that young probably shouldn't be watching the movie in the first place, and in all likelihood would be too young to be sat down and have the fact that he was adopted revealed or explained to him/her anyway. I just think that with so many things actually worth kicking up a fuss about, this type of reactionary, faux indignation should be held up for scrutiny. Thoughts?

Oh, I almost forgot, there was one part of the movie that really took things too far. When Thor says "You people are so petty, and tiny". My God, I was in shock. How dare they imply that shorter people are in some way small-minded or spiteful! Won't someone please think of the Hobbits?

lmao what sheep
Shaman - 5/17/2012, 10:21 AM
Yeah, i was reading about that a few weeks back. I just don't know how i feel about all that. People have a right to complain about what their are offended from... but something in all of it just screems "attention seeking". Stand up comics make fun of everything for any reason and they don't get as much backlash as highly successful franchises. It really leaves a bad "coat tail rider" taste in my mouth. But i wasn't adopted so...
WolvieCBM - 5/17/2012, 10:21 AM
Haha.
StrangerX - 5/17/2012, 10:22 AM
Some ppl will do anything to get attention.

ralfinader - 5/17/2012, 10:24 AM
I was going to adopt this 17 year old Vietnamese girl I have had my eye on, but now? Forget it!
MartianSupermanhunter22 - 5/17/2012, 10:24 AM
Actually that is funny!!! I laughed quite loudly in taco cabana. Uhhh he's jewish hahahahahaha!
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 10:24 AM
Couldn't the same "technique" work for the line, "He's my brother?"

"He's my jew"
"He's my honky"
"He's my n**ger"
"He's my Mexican"

See, you can play the semantics game to turn any line of a movie into something offensive.

Someone hasn't had sex in a while. Ten bucks says she's a porker.
Edmundo - 5/17/2012, 10:24 AM
Thankfully this has not gained much traction. I think Thor would say to her
"You people are so petty"
darkspark - 5/17/2012, 10:24 AM
Apparently she wasn't intelligent enough or open minded enough to take the joke for what it was. She seems like the type of journalist who looks for things that can be easily blown out of proportion and then fans the flames.

It's weird that the more tolerant we demand society to be the less tolerant we are becoming.

11th commandment "Thou shall not joke"
MrJosh - 5/17/2012, 10:26 AM
If nothing else it shows that adopted children can in fact raise an alien army and threaten the continued existence of mankind... it's empowering!
MoonDoggyX - 5/17/2012, 10:26 AM
Is this for real??? Its all good. As every rapper knows, if you're drawing hare over really stupid stuff, its just means your successful! AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!
Rhys - 5/17/2012, 10:27 AM
In response to these stupid people:

But in response to your article:

GreyChaos13Zero - 5/17/2012, 10:27 AM
people always complain about the wrong things in life, I see nothing wrong with that scene. people just trying to flip peoples words, that's it?)
GLprime2814 - 5/17/2012, 10:28 AM
You know how many times I've heard the he's adopted joke in my life, I can remember some cartoons using the linewhen I was a kid, but since the movie made a catrizillion bucks then they can go for them.
Homunculus97 - 5/17/2012, 10:28 AM
Stupidity exists in many dimensions . . .
marantaz - 5/17/2012, 10:29 AM
I expected someone to say something like this when I heard the line. Actually surprised it took this long. My usual response to complainers on trivial matters as this is "Oh, go screw yourself!" I think that's appropriate here. You're correct, Thor was distancing himself from Loki, as they are both gods and he didn't want the tiny humans to associated him, a 'good god' with Loki, whom they perceived to be an 'evil god'. But this moron couldn't understand that.

(by the way, the first word in your article should be "Quite", not "Quiet".
GingerBird - 5/17/2012, 10:29 AM
Good. This movie is so average. WAAAAAY overhyped..
continuezero - 5/17/2012, 10:30 AM
WTF is this sh*t? Where were all these people when all the Problem Child movies were coming out. Go kick rocks...
TruePunishment - 5/17/2012, 10:30 AM
I figured if anyone was going to bitch it would have been about Cap's line about only one god.
spiderclone - 5/17/2012, 10:31 AM
i want to slap that person.... loki is adopted, its more a humourorical refference to that fact that hes frost giant, ya know nasty by nature, dont these people follow back stories.
m0th3r - 5/17/2012, 10:31 AM
Idiots..go play in f***ing traffic. If it wasnt for the print medias view on the world, the ass sucking babies wouldnt even have a venue...no one cares what you think you whiny bitch..
RorMachine - 5/17/2012, 10:32 AM
Thanks..I always miss one typo somewhere Anyway, glad to see you guys all agree how silly this is. Honestly, sometimes I can at least see where these people can be coming from with certain things they rage against, but here it just seems like plain stupidity.
someone79 - 5/17/2012, 10:32 AM
...you americans are so petty...and tinny...
Malfunk1 - 5/17/2012, 10:33 AM
To these people i say 'Remove thine stick from thine rectom and search yee for a life!' Some people just don't have better things happening in their lives to keep them from saying stupid ish.
optimus69 - 5/17/2012, 10:33 AM
well if not enough media attention has been brought to it this peice of crap reporter is damn well gonna make shore it is ..
DudeGuyMan - 5/17/2012, 10:33 AM
HAHA! This proves that people are going to find faults with ANYTHING to get attention. The lameos that write this stuff most likely have horrible outlooks on the world and probably have nothing better to do but count the days to their death.
Ha1frican - 5/17/2012, 10:34 AM
Gtfo
GiantNerd - 5/17/2012, 10:34 AM
I was just telling my brother this was one of the best lines in the movie.

I cannot believe someone turned it into this....wait, yeah I can.

People : Grow the [frick] up.
MoonDoggyX - 5/17/2012, 10:34 AM
I love her little test! Soooo accurate! So, "If there is a worth that MAY OR MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE, try replacing it with a word that would ABSOLUTELY OFFENSIVE. If what you wind up with is a sentence that is offensive, then you're in the wrong..."

Logical, right...
Hawksblueyes - 5/17/2012, 10:35 AM
The only thing that is truly "OFFENSIVE" these days, is the growing list of things people are finding "OFFENSIVE." If some of these people would learn to laugh just a little bit, psychiatrists everywhere would go out of business.
Gigacrusher45 - 5/17/2012, 10:35 AM
These people have no lives and ruin everything for themselves. What's next, are people gonna complain that the Hulk wasn't smashing things correctly? Get over it.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 10:35 AM
@Someone79

There is nothing tiny about Americans. Obesity is a huge problem over here :-p. I'm pretty sure we are the fattest country.
