Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, was profiled in the UK Telegraph today while promoting his latest movie, A Fantastic Fear of Everything. When the actor was quizzed about the villainous character played by Benedict Cumberbatch, he first offers up a few vague details, before completely dismissing claims that he will be playing classic Trek villain Khan as "myth"..

Pegg is full of praise for Cumberbatch’s baddy, whom he describes [as] “not just another disgruntled alien. It’s a really interesting… sort of… thing,” he squirms. “Obviously I can’t talk about it.” While not wanting to get specific, Pegg did flatly deny reports and rumors that Cumberbatch is playing Khan…

“It’s not Khan,” replies Pegg, annoyed. “That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.”

Although nobody officially involved with the Star Trek sequel has ever confirmed that the character Cumberbatch is playing is Khan, it was so widely reported by various industry insiders and reputable net journos that most of us just assumed it was a given. Pegg seems rather adamant that it is not, but could he just be continuing a ruse began by Abrams back when this was first reported? Even after several different sources claimed that it would be Khan giving the crew of The Enterprise headaches, the director stuck to his guns. One thing is certain, Pegg is no fan of spoilers or early plot leaks, nor by the sounds of it the fans that show an interest in them, claiming “It masquerades as interest in the movie but really it’s just nosiness and impatience. You just want to say, ‘Oh f— off! Wait for the film!’”.

What do you guys think? Is this just more misdirection of is Pegg getting a bit fed up because there really is no Khan in the movie? Sound off below.

I don't follow classic Trek ( I personally find it mind numbing and boring). Are there any other notable human threats in the series?
HelaGood - 5/29/2012, 11:36 AM
seriously, why would he be playing Kahn and look like himself? i would think they would make him look at least a little exotic if he was playing Kahn.

The sad thing is that despite that quote
a lot of people will still think that he is playing Khan.
Tainted87 - 5/29/2012, 11:39 AM
Hmmmmm
How about Ricardo Montalbán as Khan?
Greengo - 5/29/2012, 11:39 AM
He has to be alien and a powerful one to bounce back from Spock's neck pinch.

@HelaGood
Khan looks so crazy with the long white hair and the open jacket because he was exiled to a barren planet for years and years. If they skipped over Khan being frozen in cryo-stasis, then he could have made for a compelling villain - a rebel from Starfleet who wants to assert human dominance throughout the galaxy. Still, there can only be one Khan.

@Tainted87 agreed, but i still think he looks to ordinary to be Khan or even a character named Kahn... he just looks like an ordinary Joe, whereas Kahn was a SUPER Joe.

A lot of people dont know it but Khan was going to return in Star Trek 5 until Shatner used his contract to force Paramount into letting him direct.
Ricardo Montalban was on Letterman and told Letterman he was coming back, and that they cut away just before "Khan kicked the bucket."
Its likely Montalban was then cast in Naked Gun also from Paramount, because of being screwed out of a role.

It's not Khan.

I have f**ked off and am now waiting for the film...
CaptainObvious - 5/29/2012, 1:57 PM
I hope it's not Khan. This is a new Star Trek universe. They should do their own thing and not have to worry about previous incarnations.

^^^Agreed
CCB1984 - 5/29/2012, 2:34 PM
did anyone suggest Benedict Cumberbatch might be playing Spock's brother? perhaps in the altered timeline the brother is human not vulcan...it could be interesting to see a more personal voyage for Spock since his planet has been destroyed and mother killed...
HelaGood - 5/29/2012, 2:43 PM
@CCB1984 that sounds brilliant actually!
steelo - 5/29/2012, 2:51 PM

Asterisk - 5/29/2012, 5:40 PM
Diora is insanely hot.

Asterisk - 5/29/2012, 5:41 PM

glad you guys like my idea that Cumberbatch is playing a human version of Sybok...would be a lot more interesting than rehashing Khan again

DarthJanus - 5/29/2012, 8:19 PM
IT IS NOT KHAN.

I'd guess Gary Mitchell or a new villain.
ComicBookGoth - 5/30/2012, 9:19 AM
