Long live the new flesh eh? Deadline report that celebrated commercials director Adam Berg is in talks to helm a remake of the 1983 David Cronenberg-directed sci-fi flick for Universal Pictures. Ehren Kruger scripted the remake and is producing with partner Daniel Bobker.

The original movie was a dark, disturbing tale about the head of a tv channel (James Woods) who tries to make his station relevant by programming Videodrome, a series that depicts sadistic scenes of torture and murder to transfix viewers. It was directed by David Cronenberg - who stirred up a bit of controversy here on CBM recently - and has, like much of the director's work, a strong cult following. So this news probably won't sit too well with many fans, especially because Deadline also report that the plan is to "modernize the concept, infusing it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller." Dear oh dear.

SimyJo - 8/22/2012, 1:22 PM
Cronenberg - he who thinks Superhero films are for an immature audience.

*hiss*

I wonder if he'll be able to squeeeeeeze past his principles enough to pick up his royalties cheque.
SageMode - 8/22/2012, 1:22 PM

Fiffis - 8/22/2012, 1:30 PM
This is seriously just getting ridiculous.
EagleEye21 - 8/22/2012, 1:37 PM
Not to mention the dude writin' the script also wrote the script for Transformers 3, and came up with Skids and Mudflap in the second one
CaptainObvious - 8/22/2012, 1:38 PM
Erhen Kruger wrote it. That tells me all I need to know about the quality of this remake.
SimyJo - 8/22/2012, 1:41 PM

Omg. Such a great movie. The film actually predicts the future in an 80's kind of way.

On one hand I am sad because I love this film and I am a Cronenberg fan. I love him because he is honest to his vision as a director and I especially love the film because of so many of the issues it deals with is what I study academically.

I dont like the remake for many of the same reason listed above. but I always thought this movei Should be remade. I was always critical of the movie because I felt Cronenberg didnt do enough research on subject which made the film totally dated. He should have studied Moor'es law, the Law of Accelerating Returns, and read books from Alvin Toffler,Ray Kurzweil and ESPECIALLY Marshall McLuhan. Cronenberg only slightly hinted upon a much larger subject matter.

If the remake is smart enough, It could be one of the greatest stories ever told, and one of the most enlightening. Directly involving ideas like how 'the message is in the medium' and 'if it works, its obscolete' and the 'global village' and how media is just the extensions of mankind. SO many ideas. You couldnt tell if the being you were talking to comprised of many individuals or if the many beings in front of you were comprised of a single individual, much less what sex or percentage of human -if at all, you were talking to.

Really??... I understand if the original sucks but Videodrome was good. At least to me it was.
Screwger - 8/22/2012, 2:04 PM
Actually if you ask any writer you will find out that each one of them have at least 15 unproduced screenplays with interesting and new ideas and unusual story, the problem with big studios. Big studios doesn't like to risk and shoot movies with original scripts 'cause they dont know will that film hit or not and that's why we have a LOT of remakes. They not gonna stop doing remakes until all(I mean ALL) remakes going to fail big way at box office. I'm not against remakes cause, you know, The THING-Scarface-True Lies...... But how many good remakes we have in this decade among of hundreds of them???
Screwger - 8/22/2012, 2:06 PM
@Grif just Robocop??? WTF you getting old? There are many films that demanding you shitting on them!
Keldor - 8/22/2012, 2:10 PM
Oh and dont hate because he said superhero movies are for kids. Hes entitled to his opinion, even though I dont neccessarily agree with him. I think the reason we are all upset is because we all have people in our lives that think the same thing no matter how much we try to change that stereotype. hey...I just like being honest.
Keldor - 8/22/2012, 2:11 PM
Also...the greatest remake of all time is probably Wizard of Oz.
Keldor - 8/22/2012, 2:12 PM
I bet the average poster age is 32 on this article.
KilledHal9000 - 8/22/2012, 2:18 PM
NO. NO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dunejedi1 - 8/22/2012, 2:36 PM
@Keldor The Wizard of Oz is an exception, but the rule stands. Remakes in general, are inferior to their original counterpart. And they're usually vastly inferior.

While I generally disapprove of most remakes I hear of, I wouldn't mind seeing Videodrome redone IF it was well written and capably directed, which by every indication, this will not be.

On another note, I didn't know there were "celebrated commercials directors". Like OMG! We got Adam Berg to direct our Pampers commercial! We might actually have a shot at "Best Diaper Commercial" at this years Commercial Oscars!
CyberBishop - 8/22/2012, 2:56 PM
Jeez.... Hollywood needs to focus on original ideas instead of remaking everything...
HelaGood - 8/22/2012, 3:14 PM
I hope they remake Silverado next...
SimyJo - 8/22/2012, 3:28 PM
Intelligent points Keldor!
*applauds*

My post may seem angrier than it really is, I was jesting really although Cronenberg did make my fur bristle with annoyance at his initial comments.
PapaMidnight - 8/22/2012, 3:43 PM
"modernize the concept" my ass! Someone must kill those stupid execs... where are the snipers when we need them?
Greggmcg - 8/22/2012, 4:07 PM
This is completely unnecessary. The original is great and doesn't need updating. When will they be announcing The remakes of Clockwork Orange, Jaws, and Reservoir Dogs?
AnarkyInTheUSA - 8/22/2012, 4:18 PM
THE FLY was a remake, so Cronenberg himself isn't above remaking movies. Even if he is a hypocrite toward superheroes.
AnarkyInTheUSA - 8/22/2012, 4:21 PM
AnarkyInTheUSA - 8/22/2012, 4:27 PM
How is SCANNERS or THE FLY that different from X-MEN HULK? The only differences are tone, one is a horror movie, and the other is an action movie, but they're all based in sci fi.
Boekelaar - 8/22/2012, 5:56 PM
Sometimes remakes can be fine, for instance The Thing. But that was one in a million so I doubt this will be anything better than a popcorn movie with a familiar title (which I guess isn't necessarily bad if you're in the mood for popcorn lol)
gaikinger - 8/22/2012, 6:32 PM
Well that's just stupid. Now bring me my reboot of Altered States
gaikinger - 8/22/2012, 6:35 PM
You know what demands.a remake? Westwor
gaikinger - 8/22/2012, 6:36 PM
Oops...Westworld!
Keldor - 8/22/2012, 8:07 PM
He has also stated in the past that he is giving up on horror films alltogether.
Keldor - 8/22/2012, 8:07 PM
I Agree Gaikinger!

Universal has decided to do a re-make of"Videdrome" . It just so happens SOUL wrote 2 songs specifically about this movie and here is a small tidbit of one of them.Unfortunately it's "LIVE" and not that great quality wise but if you have seen the original you'll get the drift of the song.An Awesome film with tidbits of the future to come or by now the future that has come and passed. I would LOVE to bring some Metal to the soundtracK for the new film. "Welcome to the New Flesh" SOUL .....Enjoy!
