Is Viggo Mortensen Being Looked At For DOCTOR STRANGE?

We have already heard the rumor that the character would appear in Thor: The Dark World, and that actor Joel Edgerton was Marvel's pick to play him, but now we have some more info from a (supposedly) reliable source that might link fan-fave Mortensen to the role..

Get that salt ready! Coming off the rumor that the Master Of The Mystic Arts may pop up in the currently shooting Thor sequel, we have another rumor for a quiet Monday. I was, and still remain, unsure about the source of the following Tweets, but reputable sites such as /Film (where we picked up this rumor) seem to think he might well be on to something..

Both Tweets are unrelated, so even if Mortensen IS in talks with Marvel, it doesn't necessarily mean it's for the Dr. Strange role. Still, it's fun to speculate. But remember that we are still unsure of this guy's credibility - he has posted a few accurate things, but also a few silly Tweets that seem almost purposefully ridiculous at the same time. The fact that so many other sites have picked up on this is the only reason we did. After all, ya just never know! I'm sure if this does pan out, there won't be many people annoyed at the casting choice anyway.

He could work for Strange but I've have a gut feeling he's gonna be Baron Zemo in Cap: Winter Soldier.
marvel72 - 9/10/2012, 10:37 AM
that'll be cool,he's a fantastic actor.
LMB10 - 9/10/2012, 10:38 AM
I think, until he is proven legit or not legit, we need to not take evrything this guy says so seriously.
Bodwulf - 9/10/2012, 10:49 AM
I would love this!
Dr. Strange, Viggo is rumored to appear as the Doctor.
JatevinM - 9/10/2012, 11:03 AM
I hope so unless they can get Johnny Depp
CapFanLex005 - 9/10/2012, 11:04 AM
I like the idea of him being Zemo
Theunderdog - 9/10/2012, 11:05 AM
Would have been a great Nick Fury

TayDee - 9/10/2012, 11:10 AM
This could be good and bad news. Good news that Strange is being introduced, bad because it means we may spend more time on earth which is what dragged the first film down
KaneVonDoom - 9/10/2012, 11:13 AM
Strange is by no means, "Bound to Earth". He could travel Astrally, or open up Portals... Maybe Jane and he go to one of the realms.
OdinsBeard - 9/10/2012, 11:15 AM
yes please. and yes please.

thank you.
MyInnerDork - 9/10/2012, 11:15 AM
Yes please!
BattlinMurdock - 9/10/2012, 11:16 AM
Even though Moretensen signed off mainstream film after Hidalgo...so I'm a bit skeptical.
Simonsonrules - 9/10/2012, 11:18 AM
A very interesting rumor.
TayDee - 9/10/2012, 11:19 AM
He's not bound to earth, but I think the past rumor just stated that he was just going to play a scientists like role in the Thor II film
Simonsonrules - 9/10/2012, 11:20 AM
And with the possible "Orb of Agamotto" in Odin's Treasury, the Dr. Strange cameo is likely and relevant.
Kovacs - 9/10/2012, 11:22 AM
kind of a STRANGE rumour....
Godzillafart - 9/10/2012, 11:22 AM
@Simonsonrules: Are putting the Orb into the treasure room in Thor 2?
caveman - 9/10/2012, 11:22 AM
WANT.
Godzillafart - 9/10/2012, 11:23 AM
Could work I guess, but I really want to see Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 9/10/2012, 11:24 AM
I was on Youtube just now watching some Clevver Movie news clips and they had one reporting that Marvel already has a script for a Dr. Strange movie written by the same guys who did the recent Conan flick. They also say that Strange will have a big part in the Thor sequel.I think the "Dr. Strange being in Thor" news is true if Thanos is going to be the main villain in Avengers 2.I would love to see the Sorcerer Supreme in his own film first.
Simonsonrules - 9/10/2012, 11:25 AM
@Godzillafart:

Que?
TheSoulEater - 9/10/2012, 11:25 AM
I could see him being an unbelievably scary Baron Mordo more.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 9/10/2012, 11:28 AM
@TayDee I think Thor:TDW will be exploring other realms.Thor will probably bring Jane and her crew to Asgard.
ricko8687 - 9/10/2012, 11:28 AM
He is a good choice. But my first choice still Jim cavizel
Godzillafart - 9/10/2012, 11:29 AM
@Simonsonrules: What do you mean? You said there is a possibility of the Orb in the treasure room...which could be awesome. Is there talk of that that I missed?
jimpinto24 - 9/10/2012, 11:29 AM
IMO, Marvel should not cast Viggo Mortensen as Dr. Strange! There's other actors that are better for the role. Like Johnny Depp or Jim Caviezel would be a better choice to play Dr. Strange.
Godzillafart - 9/10/2012, 11:29 AM
@TheSoulEater: I agree!

@hope420 I just read about the Dr. Strange possible end credits teaser a few minutes ago...I guess Viggo Mortensen is a remote possibilty?

SuspenseSmith - 9/10/2012, 11:33 AM
That would be the best. He really hasn't done much to my knowledge recently. He seems likely and available.
Equivocal - 9/10/2012, 11:35 AM
I'm not sure Joel Edgerton.....
good actor but how old is he ?
how old is Vigo ??

MARVELPSYCHO79 - 9/10/2012, 11:38 AM
Viggo Mortensen would be great as Strange but I can't see him signing a multi-picture deal at this point in his career.I know he did the LOTR movies but that was more than ten years ago.I agree with most of you that there are some more good choices for Strange and I'm sure Marvel wants to sign someone to a six picture deal or more.
Equivocal - 9/10/2012, 11:41 AM
at this point, Jim Cavaziel is the only PERFECT actor for the role, and big, HUGE NO to the other OVERRATED actor jony depp, hell to the nO !!!!

LOL

this is Dr. Strange in my eyes !!!

Facade - 9/10/2012, 11:45 AM
Thank goodness the nightmare campaign for Depp is over.
CharlesTheIncredible - 9/10/2012, 11:50 AM
yea viggo is who IGN heard in their podcast when i first heard about Strange supposedly being in The Dark World. I guess i can see him in it, that would add the nerd factor some could be looking to add to the movie.
sexfoodcomics - 9/10/2012, 11:50 AM
Oh man Viggo would be bad ass. I hope they get him.
MisterMagurlypse - 9/10/2012, 11:56 AM
I would prefer Viggo as a villian. Either Baron Mordo or Zemo. I'm going to put it down as he'll be in CATWS as Baron Zemo.
TheAmazingChrisReeve63 - 9/10/2012, 12:00 PM
If they can get Viggo to have a role (a BIG role) somewhere in "Phase 2" of the MCU, then go for it, Marvel! If they can get Viggo to play as Doctor Strange, then I wouldn't mind at all. The man's 53 years old, but I'm sure that won't stop him from delivering amazing an performance as Doctor Strange (or somebody else). RDJ was 43 years old when he starred as Tony Stark in Iron-Man back in 2008, and no one minded his age, and he still gave us a spectacular performance as Tony Stark/Iron-Man. So I'm sure that Viggo can do the same with Strange (if he gets the role). Just sayin'. :)

Stay EPIC, my friends!
TheAmazingChrisReeve63 - 9/10/2012, 12:04 PM
But, if Viggo doesn't get the role of the Sorcerer Supreme, then he could go as a villian. Namely, Baron Zemo. :)

Whatever role he gets, I'll be happy as hell just because he's part of the BIG MCU. :D
Nomis1800 - 9/10/2012, 12:11 PM
WANT!
preacher - 9/10/2012, 12:11 PM
Joel Edgerton? Really? From "Warrior" and "The Thing" prequel? He's a fantastic actor, especially in "Warrior" but as Dr. Strange? Absolutely not! He looks nothing like what I would expect a live action version of Stephen Strange to look like!!!!Viggo, on the other hand, more closely resembles him, I for one would be happy with Jim Cavaziel (sp?)!

also, where was the easter egg in thor that pointed to Dr. Strange? I guess I missed that one.
TheAmazingChrisReeve63 - 9/10/2012, 12:15 PM
Weeell, now that I think of it, Marvel could give Viggo a choice. Either he can play as Baron Mordo for an upcoming Doctor Strange film, or Baron Zemo in Captain America: Winter Soldier. Either way, both Barons are bad@$$. :)

SageMode - 9/10/2012, 12:21 PM

Caviezel for STRANGE. Nuff said
gambgel - 9/10/2012, 12:23 PM
He would be a great Mr. Sinister in a x-men sequel too.

Vigo and Fassbender as the two villains of the x-men would be amazing.
TheTaskmaster - 9/10/2012, 12:25 PM
HECK YES. I never actually thought about this guy as Strange but now that I have I'm totally up for this. He is such an underrated actor. Loved him in the LOTR trilogy, Hidalgo, everything he's done lol
TheAmazingChrisReeve63 - 9/10/2012, 12:27 PM
@preacher - I think what you were referring to about the "Doctor Strange easter egg" in Thor was this:

It's called "The Warlock's Eye". It has nothing to do with Doctor Strange (at least, not to my knowledge), but I can see how people can mistaken it for the Eye of Agomotto (an item that, in the comics, Strange owns and uses in many of his journey). I hope that clarifies what you were wondering about. :)
Simonsonrules - 9/10/2012, 12:34 PM
@AmazingSpidey63

I refer to another object:

Gulon180 - 9/10/2012, 12:35 PM
too bad daneil day-lewis is a serious actor
OdinsBeard - 9/10/2012, 12:39 PM
Gulon@ which sucks because he doesn't take on a role unless he can spend 3 months transforming himself into what must be the main character. shame, cuz he could show up on day-one and phone it in and still knock it out of the park. just do it for the paycheck DDL!!
MutantEquality - 9/10/2012, 12:40 PM
Amazing actor. If the script is right I know he will knock it outta the park
Optimus83 - 9/10/2012, 12:46 PM

Patrick Dempsey is better option. ...
