Mathew Fox On CBMs, Thinks They Will Be "Exhausted Pretty Soon"

Mathew Fox played the lead role of Jack in Lost for many years, and found a large fan following. His looks, height, and acting skills seem to have endeared him to many CBM fans, and he has been brought up frequently by many fans when quite a few roles (Daredevil, Flash for example) have been discussed. But does Fox see himself in a CBM role someday? While speaking to him about some his upcoming movies like Emperor, World War Z and Alex Cross, Collider mention how popular the genre is right now with the likes of The Avengers and TDKR, and if he can think of any characters he may have some interest in..

FOX: Off the top of my head I can’t – you know the truth is that stuff’s going to be exhausted pretty soon, because they’ve been churning them out man.

COLLIDER: I said that a few years ago, but this year is the biggest it’s ever been.

FOX: I know, and so once they’ve established all those franchises they’ll just keep doing more, more Avengers and more Iron Man’s and so on and so forth. But as far as like original material that is part of our comic book history, they don’t have a lot of stuff left. But I would be – I’m a huge comic fan, I love graphic art and I just love, you know I love that kind of thing so I mean, you know if it was the right thing I’d jump all over it, I think it would be really fun. And if it was something that my eleven year-old boy was fired up about then it would make it even doubly fun, you know?

Fox's opinion on CBMs is one shared by quite a few people in the industry, but honestly, as long as we always have 2 or 3 movies on the horizon, I don't think anyone needs to worry. As for whether he would be interested in playing a superhero, sounds like he might have back-tracked a little at the end there for whatever reason, so who knows! Which characters - if any - do you guys think Fox would be well suited for? Be sure to click the link below to check out the full interview.

I think we are just at the start tbh
PaulRom - 9/20/2012, 12:32 PM
Yeah, with how big Avengers and The Dark Knight/TDKR have been, I don't see the amount of CBMs slowing down any time soon.

That being said, I'd love to see Fox in a CBM role. I can see him as Daredevil.
JordanKing - 9/20/2012, 12:47 PM
CBMs are slowing down about as much as when a fat kid spots a cake shop up ahead. They won't be going anywhere for a long time. Similar to the fat kid.
marvel72 - 9/20/2012, 12:48 PM
people said that before the avengers & the dark knight rises destroyed the box office.
TheAbomination - 9/20/2012, 12:54 PM
Maybe in about 10 years, he could have a point. But right now could not be a better time to be a CBM fan.
BackwardGalaxy - 9/20/2012, 12:54 PM
"They don't have a lot of stuff left." - Really? Really, brah?
13echo - 9/20/2012, 12:54 PM
He's right...
campblood - 9/20/2012, 12:56 PM
he just pissed because his movie career is almost nonexistent
IMNAvenger - 9/20/2012, 12:57 PM
I see where he's coming from but there's so many stories left to tell and the movie business has just scratched the surface! If you look at movies today, there are usually some sort of theme for the year because Hollywood runs out of ideas so they are tapping into the comic genre which has loads of materials from the 60s when they started getting more popular. Now they just have to use that material and translate it to the silver screen. Plus, there's always new stuff being written!
DioFoRio - 9/20/2012, 1:02 PM
he should do X-men:Party of Five
Zarog - 9/20/2012, 1:02 PM
LOL. We've exhausted the material and, "as far as like original material that is part of our comic book history, they don’t have a lot of stuff left." Yeah. Okay. Guess you aren't actually a comic book fan, because there is plenty of stuff that has never been touched.
RorMachine - 9/20/2012, 1:04 PM
I can see how someone who wasn't familiar with comic would think this in fairness, he's only wrong from a certain perspective. All of the biggest characters HAVE been adapted, just because you or I may be waiting with baited breath for an Iron Fist movie for example, doesn't mean a large number of casual fans are going to be. These movies are not made by the studios JUST for us, if they can't market them and rope in general audience then they WILL stop making them.
DioFoRio - 9/20/2012, 1:04 PM
the comic book movie genre will die out for certain co.'s. Marvel with it's cinematic universe won't die as easy. Due simply to the fact that new characters are going to be given films to carry once the first tier of characters have exhausted their spotlight in the public eye. It's the re-boots that will kill certain characters under the banner of non marvel companies.
DioFoRio - 9/20/2012, 1:06 PM
once D.C. gets the ball rolling on one cohesive universe the same could be said for them
jimpinto24 - 9/20/2012, 1:06 PM
Matthew Fox looks the part for DD.
MarkJulian - 9/20/2012, 1:06 PM
He didn't really say anything negative. Moreso along the lines that all the popular characters are already taken.
chuckg313 - 9/20/2012, 1:13 PM
a lot of actors are pissed because they laughed at cbm's at first now they are falling all over themselves to get in line for the hottest thing going!
jatfly - 9/20/2012, 1:17 PM
Onsome level it won't be like it was this year. So he is sorta right yes it will go down........... And to be honest once they plan on making a Dr. Strange and/or Black Panther movie it's about over anyways. No secondary characters will make any money.
Danbojohnj - 9/20/2012, 1:20 PM
Just another genre like romcoms or action....they might go away for a year or two,go really dark then come back all dayglo or whuteva but they are never going away.
nonserviam - 9/20/2012, 1:21 PM
He's just in character for his next big role as Captain Butthurt.
MrChuff - 9/20/2012, 1:23 PM
This just whiffs of Fox being pissed he never got chosen for anything... Balls to him.
OdinsBeard - 9/20/2012, 1:23 PM
yeah they're not going anywhere. that's like saying they're going to stop making action movies. not every comic book is about super heroes. the super hero thing might die down temporarily but the younger generation will want their own interpretation. they will re-surge again.

it's like saying they're going to stop adapting novels.

why doesn't anyone every say these things about 007?
IIIAdamantiumIII - 9/20/2012, 1:28 PM
this guy is butthurt lost was a pile of garbage and no one wants to higher a douche like him
PsyGuy - 9/20/2012, 1:30 PM
Just go back to hitting women on busses, bro.
DioFoRio - 9/20/2012, 1:34 PM
@Psyboy lol forgot about that
superotherside - 9/20/2012, 1:35 PM
He must not be much of a comic fan because everyone knows that there are plenty of stuff to do in the movies. So yeah, that guy sadly doesn't know what he's talking about. LOL.
Giznad - 9/20/2012, 1:37 PM
@Grif, haha. I couldn't disagree more with this guy. This year all I could think about was the future of CBMs, not the fact they're coming to an end. Even though that Spider-Fag movie kinda blew, everyone hopes the sequel might be alright. All I can think about is Thanos with The Avengers, and I'm sure no one can stop thinking about the Batman reboot. By the wrath of the nerds, this guy's career might be exhausted pretty soon.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 9/20/2012, 1:40 PM
Been going strong for 80+ years, don't think anything will randomly stop it from flowing.
Moakynubs - 9/20/2012, 1:46 PM
After Avengers, I don't think putting out sequels (especially if they're on par) is going to kill the industry any time soon.
patriautism - 9/20/2012, 1:46 PM
Well he's really an expert on this subject, as his career exhausted years ago...
Moakynubs - 9/20/2012, 1:47 PM
That being said, yeah, this will run it's course eventually. Just like Westerns (Mostly) and Star Wars (The movies, anyway).
DoctorDoomSayer - 9/20/2012, 1:50 PM
Doom believes this man is delusional...
thebearjew - 9/20/2012, 1:52 PM
this isn't going to slow down that im sure of especially because comics arent just about dc n marvel. Its not just superheroes there's all kinds of comics romance, comedys, science fiction. Mathew fox clearly doesnt read comics theres so so so many good stories in comics! Not just superheroes! that are just waiting to be trasformed into film. In the same way book based films arent going to stop comic book movies arent going to stop. Especially with hollywood running out of ideas they're searching far and wide for story ideas and there's also a LOT of obscure comics that i'm aure would be big blockbuster successes. SO! That's what I think about that. Also, mathew fox is a bad actor
Dunejedi - 9/20/2012, 1:52 PM
I do see his point about over-saturating the market with CBM's, and it's something that needs to be carefully navigated (which is why I think it's a good idea to do 4-5 a year between all the properties). But the genie's out of the bottle, CBM's aren't going anywhere. I mean, they still make gladiator movies. But to his point, they don't make 5 of them every year.

But now that I'm done playing Devil's advocate, let the bashing begin!

My favorite line from Knocked Up is when Katherine Heigl is gonna interview Matthew Fox and Seth Rogen says, "Hey, you know what's interesting about him? Nothing." Fun-NEH!
HeadPool420 - 9/20/2012, 1:57 PM
He sounds like a jealous hater trying to be civil.
skidz - 9/20/2012, 1:57 PM
As long as they're treated as genuine films that take people seriously and involve people with genuine stories to tell they'll always be coming out. Has anyone noticed that the majority of people saying this are actors who got burned by bad roles in bad movies? The actors in quality adaptations don't seem to say that as often.
Nomis1800 - 9/20/2012, 1:58 PM
CBM's are a special genre :D
GUNSMITH - 9/20/2012, 1:58 PM
THERES ALOT OF CHARACTERS TO CHOOSE FROM, NEW ONES AND EVEN SOME CHARACTERS THAT WERE RE-IMAGINED AND BECAME COOLER THAN BEFORE

THING IS, BACK IN THE DAY WE HAD STOP MOTION AND CHEESY STUFF THAT REALLY DIDN'T GIVE THE SOURCE MATERIAL IT'S TRUE DUE

NOW WE HAVE CGI, I DON'T THINK THEY WILL GET EXHAUSTED, I THINK IT'S THEIR TIME...
Tymminator - 9/20/2012, 2:07 PM
Like any genre, as long as Product is made that people will see, they will get made. Having movies like Nolan's Batman series, Iron man and the Avengers just showed the studios that there is money to be made and people will come. It's in it's infancy, but IMO its only gonna snowball from here.
Tymminator - 9/20/2012, 2:09 PM
Mmmmmm.....Linda Carter. I hit puberty early cause of her.
