IRON MAN 3: Does The Mandarin Have Some Connection To Captain America?

A screencap from today's trailer has had a few of us buzzing on Twitter. The image shows Ben Kingsley's Mandarin from the back, with a tattoo visible on his neck that appears to at least resemble Cap's shield. Have a look for yourselves and join the speculation..

As you can see, that tattoo clearly resembles Captain America's shield, but with am "A" set in the center. A for Avengers? Maybe, but our own Josh Wilding points out that in a recent interview, Kevin Feige explained that The Mandarin uses "symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end.". That could certainly explain the shield, and that A looks very like the symbol for "Anarchy", perhaps twisting the very ideals the shield represents. Is this just a throwaway nod for the fans that we are reading too much into? Or will this villainous character have some sort of connection to Steve Rogers, perhaps tying this movie into Captain America: The Winter Soldier or the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

Perhaps he's a Cap sycophant.
NerdyGeek - 10/23/2012, 1:54 PM
The Mandarin is a terrorist, like Osama Bin-Laden. It's very clear that he hates both heroes and the USA (where The Avengers come from, makes sense). So, he's pretty much being ironic by having the Shield of the greatest American hero with the Anarchy logo instead of the Shield. Make sense?

Oh and "connection" to Captain America?

Sorry Ror, had to :P

NerdyGeek - 10/23/2012, 2:02 PM
"Anarchy logo instead of the Shield star"
sciencefriction - 10/23/2012, 2:03 PM
Huh, I didn't notice that until the close up, interesting. I like where this film is heading. Intelligent references that also tie into the other Avengers.
superotherside - 10/23/2012, 2:10 PM
Very cool idea. Probably so. Hope they tie into each other in someway.
SomTingWong - 10/23/2012, 2:12 PM
nice way to tie things in. yeah we got to the "possible easter egg in first trailer" phase! awesome!

StarkAnthony - 10/23/2012, 2:41 PM
I was considering another possibility - in the Iron Man 2 trailers, Black Widow's SHIELD patch on her arm was digitally removed. It is possible that they digitally inserted this to hide what is really on his neck. Yeah, they would probably just erase what is really there instead of replace it, but it is possible. In the Extremis comic that is where they injected Mallen, and as he isn't in the movie they could have just given part of his story to the Mandarin or just used the neck injection.

Im betting that the Ten Rings terrorist group has been around for decades and was one of the groups Captain America has fought during WW2.
CoolantTech - 10/23/2012, 3:12 PM
Intiguing indeed... They should tie all the solo movies together in some way so the next Avengers movie would be that much more coherent
RAWRG - 10/23/2012, 3:13 PM
CANT WAIT FOR THIS!!! Right now, I'm definitely looking foward to this more than Man of Steel!!! BUT WHO CARES! PHASE 2 IS GONNA KICK ASS!!!!!! 2013 HAS TO COME FASTER!!!!!!

Durf - 10/23/2012, 3:45 PM
That is an interesting tatoo to say the least. A perversion of the symbol by the Mandarin? Maybe...

@tea: LMFAO! Good stuff as always bro
Jollem - 10/23/2012, 4:04 PM
mandarin is obviously bucky
aztecRaingod - 10/23/2012, 4:17 PM
Maybe its just an easter egg, and the tattoo is purely CGI, not even in the actual film.
GetsugaTensho22 - 10/23/2012, 4:21 PM
I definitely think he's being ironic. Maybe it's possible he respects Captain America's whole "Risen like the Phoenix" thing? Maybe he's all "You were nothing...then you became everything" and believes that he and Cap are a lot alike, only he's evil and Cap's not.
Franshu - 10/23/2012, 4:26 PM
And what if it were like in the Ultimate Comics Captain America mini-series, where there was this flawed super-soldier who turned insane? That would make him kind of a more physical threat (a non-robotic one for once) for Iron Man, and would also make some descriptiones I'v read on the Internet (people who had seen the trailer at SDCC said he was wearing a military jacket under that kimono), and would also explain his hate for all governments or whatever.
JustDame - 10/23/2012, 4:27 PM
Maybe the Ten Rings have some connection to Hydra. I don't phucking know.
SCURVYDOG619 - 10/23/2012, 4:31 PM
Perhaps the Masters Of Evil ALL have these tats....

Yes,I went there.....
