Details From Longer STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Teaser Emerge

A longer version of the teaser we featured yesterday - which will be with us next week - screened today at "Butt-Numb-A-Thon" in Austin Texas, and some details have found their way online which might just put a different spin on certain things revealed in the first teaser..

The Japanese version of the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser has a few extra shots at the end, one of which saw Spock and Kirk (presumably) seemingly reenacting the poignant goodbye scene from the end of Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan. This obviously reignited speculation that Benedict Cumberbatch's villain character must in fact be Khan Noonian Singh after all. But, the following Tweets from Badass Digest's Devin Faraci suggest that it was actually Spock and Cumberbtach's character in the scene, putting an entirely different spin on things. Could he be playing a version of Spock's brother Sybock?

"Full STAR TREK trailer indicates hands against glass scene is actually Spock and Cumberbatch. If he’s Sybock… Well, kudos.

That said, Cumberbatch does NOT have Vulcan ears. Hands against glass scene seems to be Cumby in the brig.

Trailer opens with Pike VO, telling Kirk he has courage but no humility, and someday that will get him and his crew killed.

Oh yeah: there’s space stuff in the full TREK trailer. Space combat. Guy in a space suit zooming around."

Jordan Hoffman adds..

"Cumberbatch was definitely shown in some sort of brig

Chekov appears in a red tunic (instead of his regular gold tunic)

Someone wears a EVA space suit with similar design to the one used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture"

The plot thickens! Of course nothing is confirmed, but if it was indeed Cumberbatch in that scene with Spock then we might have to add another character to the list of those the Sherlock actor may be playing. Anyway, the teaser should be online next week so we can have a look for ourselves.

Chekov in a red shirt? Oh....he's dead

Well he was made Security Chief in the Motion Picture, so maybe they are doing the same?

I think it is a safe bet this is Gary Mitchell as the evidence so far seems to stack up, he has the supernatural side as seen in the trailer teaser. There is a still un-named female role in the movie who looks oddly like Elizabeth Denher, and he has some form of revenge plan. The scene described above, with (presumably) Mitchell and Spock could well be showing their connection before (if following the basic original Mitchell storyline) he is left behind and that now he is locked in the brig their is still signs of friendship. This also correlates to what Pike tells him at the start, perhaps it is Kirk's over confidence that causes this to happen to Mitchell and thus beggining his character developement throughout the film. I'm certain this isn't Sybock as he does not have Vulcan ears and I doubt they would choose to go down the Star Trek V path again...
Even if the line "what does God want with a spaceship" is easily the best quote from a science fiction movie EVER!

Sweet! Can't wait!

remember that in the tease Kirk is wearing a grey uniform for part of it.. that can easily be between him or BC

TheFanBoy - 12/8/2012, 6:22 PM
@Tony93 fair point, given the evidence so far it's pretty much a 50/50 gamble so far, but I think it's safe to say it's either Kahn or Mitchell
TheFanBoy - 12/8/2012, 6:22 PM
*Khan

Damn them redshirts always die. RIP Chekov
SuperDude001 - 12/8/2012, 6:32 PM
Not Cumberbatch's hand. His is much longer and thinner. Just try and google and image, it's not his unless they've really modified it in some weird manner.
TankD - 12/8/2012, 6:35 PM
Its obviously cumberbatch and quinto. sooo many theories on who he is. Lets just wait. still stupid abrams is pulling the mystery crap like with cloverfield and super8. totally pointless.

Cumberbatch planned to be caught!

Every genre movie blockbuster will be a remake of The Dark Knight from now on.
maxxgone - 12/8/2012, 8:44 PM
gotta 100% agree with TankD's irritation with abrahms. if the identity of BC's character would give away a huge plot detail or something that couldn't be taken back - then yes by all means keep it shrouded in secrecy til opening day.

but we already are well aware that JJ & co. have thrown their own spin own things and are basically making their own cannon. therefore it's completely unnecessary to jerk us around in this fashion. the reveal on who he is will only spark more hype & conversation. to drag it on like this is pointless & starting to piss people off.

he did the same thing with super 8 & it was a bad move then as well.
crashrendar - 12/8/2012, 8:45 PM
i hope he is khan. wrath of khan was so boring. khan and kirk were never in the same room. with his superhuman agility in the trailer, and his vengeance talk...it has to be khan. who else would exact vengeance? him and his botany bay people are awakened by klingons or something and them they come back to earth make a ton of sense. why would gary mitchell need the enterprise? he's a god.
LP4 - 12/8/2012, 9:33 PM
^I sure hope he ISN'T khan
mgeoff88 - 12/8/2012, 9:36 PM
Is that really Cumberbatch's hand? I'm actually relieved it is, because that's a good sign that Spock won't be killed off now.

If it was Kirk's hand, they wouldn't be trying to recreate that scene from Wrath of Khan for no reason...
blackster - 12/8/2012, 9:54 PM
why would it be gary mitchell?

especially considering how 'obvious' it is.

just think about this whole thing for one second, abrams wouldn't keep the identity a secret if it was someone as obvious. unremarkable (star power), and as relatively uninteresting as gary mitchell.

i don't want it to be, but i think there is a possibility that this might be an updated version of khan.
DarkKnight23 - 12/8/2012, 9:55 PM
Why isn't JJ Abrams directing the next Transformers movie?
crashrendar - 12/8/2012, 10:52 PM
what if it's chekov's hand? if he's red shirting this movie, he's probably going to die.
Happy11 - 12/8/2012, 11:26 PM
@fanboy is it safe to say because i don't think so.
Happy11 - 12/8/2012, 11:28 PM
PLEASE NO MORE WITH THE GARY MITCHELL SHITE.
Happy11 - 12/8/2012, 11:29 PM
@Runsdower I've noticed that as well lol
95 - 12/9/2012, 12:05 AM
Whether he's Khan or Gary Mitchell, he's a completely different version of those characters. Unless he's someone completely different. I guess at this point, he might as well be an original creation.... which is what I wanted from the start.

Speaking of JJ Abrams' secrecy... I was one of those who followed the Super 8 viral campaign. It was creepy and I'm a sucker for UFO conspiracy stories (without believing them). I have to say: I was incredibly disappointed. So I thank you guys for reminding me about that. As much as I may be excited to pre-order 70mm IMAX tickets to Star Trek Into Darkness... I'm going to say that I'm official done with speculating the villain for this movie.

It's Benedict Cumberbatch causing chaos. I'm in.
Newbus - 12/9/2012, 12:57 AM
I've just noticed his ear looks different to how it normally would look.
LP4 - 12/9/2012, 1:47 AM
@blackster- He is't khan. There IS NO KHAN in this movie, Simon Pegg had said as much.

People need to let Khan go already
6of13 - 12/9/2012, 2:25 AM
Khan is NOT the only villain in Star Trek to want vengeance.
Also, Khan's vendetta was specifically against Kirk for stranding him on Ceti Alpha V for 15 years.
Yes. 15 years. For being stranded on a hostile planet that was barely survivable (even for the augments). By this time Kirk was well into his career and an admiral. Star Trek Into Darkness is set a year after the last one. What baggage could Khan possible have to bring at this point?
Cumberbatch's villain seems to have a vendetta against Star Fleet, not Kirk in particular.

Garth of Izar seems a more likely possibility than either Khan or Mitchell but I am not betting anything on that. Just that he seems more likely. The Khan rumours really gained some hold when Benecio Del Toro was being considered for the role of villain.
IMO, both del Toro and Cumberbatch could be Garth of Izar. I really don't see Cumberbatch as Khan. He looks to sleek and mannered. It's not Khan.
LP4 - 12/9/2012, 3:53 AM
Those who say they think or hope the villain is Khan obviously don't know Star Trek very well, cause they seem to think Khan is the ONLY villain in Star Trek.

“It’s not Khan,” said Pegg in a recent interview with The Telegraph. “That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.”

~Simon Pegg

I don't really honestly know how much more blunt Simon Pegg had to be in order to get it through to the countless IDIOTS begging for Khan. KHAN IS NOT IN THE [frick]ING MOVIE.

Ok?

Now we can all move on, find out who the villain REALLY is and live our lives. I wouldn't mind Khan appearing in the 3rd film. But he has far too much history that to cram it all into the 2nd film just out of the blue when there was absolutely ZERO set up for his character in the last film, makes no sense at all to me. If the idea is to introduce Khan in the 3rd. I'd say- at the end of the 2nd film, put a post-credits scene of the Botany Bay floating around in space. Great way to set up Khan for the 3rd.

But as for this film- THERE. IS. NO. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

^_^
LP4 - 12/9/2012, 3:57 AM
Plus I don't know about the rest of you but doesn't Khan seem more like a 3rd film type of guy anyway?

I get TWOK was the 2nd movie of the trek film franchise but with this new rebooted universe, they are taking cues from recent blockbusters. Plus the 3rd films are usually meant as the "send off" for the ultimate villains of particular franchises and since Khan is usually ranked as the ultimate Star Trek villain, wouldn't it make more sense to put him in the 3rd?

Pegg has lost tons of hair after dealing with all the Khan speculation. It's sad ;P
Milling - 12/9/2012, 4:15 AM
i don't hope they kill of spock :/
Kyos - 12/9/2012, 4:40 AM
I really don't give a [frick]. I'm kinda surprised they managed to not reveal anything up to this point, but ultimately I'm just looking forward to the movie.

It's "Sherlock vs Starfleet", damnit. BRING IT!! :D
AvengersRock - 12/9/2012, 7:41 AM
@6of13 You are forgetting the original Space Seed episode, or maybe you are too young to have seen it. One hundred years before Kirk was born, Khan and his band of genetically superior "supermen" tried to rule the earth and were sent into outer space. There are many reasons for all of them to want revenge against earth.

I could be wrong, but what if another Federation vessel found them in suspended animation, woke them up, but couldn't control them as Kirk and crew did in Space Seed back in the original series. Khan would have taken over the ship, put all his people in Federation outfits, gone back to earth and started to take it over "from the inside" as has been teased. He would have wanted revenge against humanity for his defeat a century earlier. This is very plausible from everything we know.

As @TheRedHood says, my money is still on Khan.
TankD - 12/9/2012, 8:43 AM
@AvengersRock No its not because thats BC's hand and the look on kirks face when BC come up with the gun hes shocked to see this guy is still alive. They know him they sacrificed him for some reason or another. THATS why he wants revenge go watch the trailer again Youll see what im talking about they want to put a new DIFFERENT spin on the stories they would not repeat whats already happen NEW timeline different events.
Bobevanz - 12/9/2012, 12:01 PM
I knew it was cumberpatch, killing off spock seems illogical :)
LP4 - 12/9/2012, 12:28 PM
@AvengersRock- None of us were too young to have seen the Space Seed episode of TOS. We've all seen it. We all know what happened.

But here are the facts-

-Khan was NEVER in Starfleet
-Khan IS NOT a white guy
-Khan furthermore wasn't british as Cumberbatch still retained his british accent for the role and you can tell from the teaser trailer ;P

And lastly as many have already stated, this guy doesn't seem to hold a personal grudge against Kirk the way Khan did.

No this will be a villain possibly INSPIRED by Khan. But is it ACTUALLY Khan? No. Simon Pegg defused all these rumors as simply a "myth"
LP4 - 12/9/2012, 12:29 PM
And those who are willing to put their money on Khan, better get ready to pay up
YOUNGBL00D - 12/9/2012, 2:46 PM
Why is everyone getting sp upset and making assumptions, what we saw wasn't even an official teaser trailer it was an announcement trailer for the teaser trailer. NO ONE REALLY KNOWS ANYTHING! Stop biting each others head off.
Reimagined Khan, and after the way they've presented it, I'm a blogger's worst nightmare: I love it! Cumberpatch's delivery is so cold yet effective, you're soul would've died years before you'd let you contemporaries know, if you don't get this offering. :D #German: you have no opinion. Joke, you pretentious dorks!
"Bones..,Romulan ale.." -'82
@Rowsdower

Umm, yeah. The Final Sacrifice. It's my favourite MST3k! Actually, Deathstalker might be right up there with Zombie Nightmare on that one.
That's Khan's hand on glass. The tragedy will be the "She;s Out of Your League" death/sacrifice that may occur. They won't kill Spock, LA boy is being ridiculous with his contract management. -reality
Zuriel - 12/9/2012, 6:14 PM
Has everyone forgotten that Roberto Orci had Dr. Tolian Soran on his list of possible villains for a Star Trek sequel? This was more than a year ago, but I remember he had Khan, Tolian and Mitchel on a list of possible villains. It might be a shot in the dark but Benedict Cumberbatch is British, and even favors a younger Malcolm McDowell who is British. McDowell, for those who do not know, played Dr. Tolian Soran in Star Trek Generations. His character could have been around in Kirk's earlier years, being that he was trapped in the Nexus for so long.
AvengersRock - 12/9/2012, 8:51 PM
@TankD - You're making assumptions that the story has to follow the same plot points or it can't be Khan. I don't know if its really Khan. We're all just speculating, but it could be a different story using Khan. That's all I'm saying.

@LP4 - The point I was making is that this could be a reimagined first meeting of Kirk and Khan. This is a new universe; the space seed episode never happened in this universe. Of course Khan was never in the Federation. For all we know, Khan's attempted takeover of Earth happened before the Federation existed. That doesn't mean he couldn't pretend to be a federation officer in command of a federation vessel. He would certainly want revenge on Earth for defeating his "superior intellect" and putting him in cryogenic freeze and sending him into deep space.

I don't know that its Khan, but you don't know that its not him...I'm just suggesting a plausible story line involving Khan with all that we know.

By the way, Khan wouldn't hold a personal grudge against Kirk before he's met him. That would be illogical, as Spock would say. lol!
TankD - 12/10/2012, 11:24 AM
I know its assumption but its totally plausible and makes more sense.
any one seen this? clips were shown I got this from an LA times article.

The clip opens with a sequence set in futuristic London, with a couple visiting a comatose girl at a children’s hospital, and Cumberbatch’s character informing the distraught father that he possesses the ability to cure the child.

Cut to Class M Planet Nibiru, where Kirk (Chris Pine) and Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) are running through a field of red trees and diving into vibrant blue waters, attempting to flee from a tribe of aliens who, it seems, are on the verge of extinction unless the crew of the Enterprise can prevent that volcano from exploding.

It’s Spock who’s in a position to deploy a device designed to render the eruption inert, but he finds himself perilously close to death standing on a rock inside the volcano amid rivers of lava.

Also seen in the sequence are John Cho as Mr. Sulu, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty and Anton Yelchin as Chekov.

There was certainly no shortage of spectacle, which bodes well for fans of the franchise.

“Star Trek Into Darkness,” written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, is set to open in theaters May 17.
