Could We See A Female Lead In STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

There really isn't too much to go on here, but it's a quiet news day and we figured it would be worth the speculation. In saying that though, /Film's Peter Sciretta certainly SEEMS to know something about the gender of the lead character for the new Star Wars flick..

Peter sent out the following Tweet last night..

We didn't think too much about it at the time, but then it popped up in /Film's "Star Wars Bits" news roundup. So it would appear that Peter knows something although he is unwilling to elaborate, and is clearly hinting that we might be getting a female lead in Disney's upcoming Star Wars movie. Lets assume that's the case, which character could it be? Well there's Princess Leia of course, but I doubt she'd be singled out to be the focus out of all of the original trilogy characters they could choose from. A far more likely choice - since this is a new generation we're talking about - is the daughter of Leia and Han Solo, Jaina Solo, but since we were told that the expanded universe novels weren't going to be drawn from, that also seems like a long-shot. There are lots of established characters it could be, or we could be looking as a brand new lady for that galaxy far far away. What do you guys think?

Lozzy94 - 1/4/2013, 6:49 AM
If there's a female lead then please let Whedon direct.
Durango95 - 1/4/2013, 6:50 AM
I just hope Mark Hamill is in it. If theres no Skywalker, you wont get any of my money.
lapress - 1/4/2013, 6:50 AM
Doesn't have to be human either...
Durango95 - 1/4/2013, 6:52 AM
Lozzy you seriously need to shut the [frick] up. Whedon is a hack. He would ruin Star Wars just like he screwed up the Avengers. Buffy sucked too.
ClaireLannister2016 - 1/4/2013, 6:52 AM
Hell yeah girl power...plus it'll give me an excuse to make femslash ships so works for me. ;)
Durango95 - 1/4/2013, 6:53 AM
@Nomis hahaha no rookie but yeah gotta clear those corners
JohnnyKrypton - 1/4/2013, 6:56 AM
Meh. I'm not really interested in a new 'main character,' male or female- I need me a generous helping of OT characters to get me back in the theater
BattlinMurdock - 1/4/2013, 7:00 AM
IMOGEN POOTS!

Well, here's my list of ladies.

Just...no Jen Lawrence or Emma Stone, please.

She'l need a good grip :)
polarkyle - 1/4/2013, 7:03 AM
the prequels were about Anakin and the original were about Luke so i guess it makes sense for the next trilogy to be about luke's son benjamin Skywalker. i hope mara jade is in these movies cause i feel luke needed a love interest in the originals
teabag - 1/4/2013, 7:07 AM
Luke did have a love interest

Photobucket

:P
SupermansBeard - 1/4/2013, 7:11 AM
Seeing Princess Leia's and Han Solo's daughter would be awesome! That's what I want to see.
ACira - 1/4/2013, 7:16 AM
Since the expanded universe is now apparently 'non-canon', perhaps Luke will have a daughter who will be the main character in the new trilogy
KaneVonDoom - 1/4/2013, 7:26 AM
@ Levitikuz... Agreed. By that logic, we should just not have CBMs because not a single director is going to live up to every single Comic fan's expectations. That and they're all "hacks".

Some people almost relish being unhappy and having something to complain about.

JDUKE25 - 1/4/2013, 7:49 AM
Fine with me. I don't mind. As long as she's hot ;) oh, and she can act.
LegendaryBMan - 1/4/2013, 8:05 AM
"We won't be adapting material from the EU". OH OH I KNOW!! Jaina Solo! *facepalm*
ManOfKrypton - 1/4/2013, 8:07 AM
My interest level has officially dropped if this is the case! This could be like Star Wars: Underworld
Danbojohnj - 1/4/2013, 8:12 AM
I hope there is more than just one lead, male, female and alien or droid, just don't give me Tomb Raider in space for fuqs sake.
Luke Skywalker is a must though.
Wingding - 1/4/2013, 8:15 AM
The expanded universe is frickin' great. They are stupid to not use some of those cleverly crafted characters for the new movies. I mean, come on. After the horrible prequels, all we had was the EU books (clone wars does not count so don't start), which were good. And now we have to just forget about all of those characters we love?

. . . This new trilogy better be AMAZING.
Spideyguy94 - 1/4/2013, 8:26 AM
Very ballsy move if its true, It also makes getting the right director even harder.
mgeoff88 - 1/4/2013, 8:29 AM
Sounds good to me. I hope it's Mara Jade!

@ManOfKrypton She'll be a female lead like Princess Leia and Padme Amidala was.
Nomadic1 - 1/4/2013, 8:50 AM
Dirty girl...I can see her wires
HYDRA - 1/4/2013, 8:52 AM
Peter Sciretta is a [frick]ing idiot. Don't waste your time with his bullshit. He's just a click/link baiting scumbag.

Brady1138 - 1/4/2013, 9:20 AM
That's an interesting idea that I wouldn't be opposed to, although for some reason, I kind of doubt it.
NorrinRaddical - 1/4/2013, 9:31 AM
good
hope420 - 1/4/2013, 9:34 AM
I wish we could get some real news not just fan speculation!:(
valeriesghost - 1/4/2013, 9:40 AM
I'd be cool with a kick ass woman lighting it up in Star Wars
Dunejedi1 - 1/4/2013, 10:55 AM
He's just stirring the pot, folks. Move along, move along.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 1/4/2013, 11:27 AM
I'm all for it.

Whedon ruined The Avengers? Do us a favor, stay off the internet.....Forever.
WruceBane - 1/4/2013, 11:29 AM
wait, i thought the whole point of Disney acquiring lucasfilm was to capitalize on the male demographic they've been missing for all of these years...

a female lead would work for me, but would it work for Disney?
Morbius - 1/4/2013, 11:47 AM
Jaina Solo or Luke Skywalkers Daughter FTW
SaxoWolf - 1/4/2013, 12:59 PM
RobLiefeldFan - 1/4/2013, 1:24 PM
lol i love how everyone is hiding their feelings they know they dont want a female lead
PeterParkerofGotham62 - 1/4/2013, 1:36 PM
They might say that they are not using the books as storyline material but it doesn't stop them from borrowing the characters
95 - 1/4/2013, 1:41 PM
Peter has been hinting about Jon Favreau getting the job, as well. If he's "in-the-know" (he just Tweeted that he isn't making it up)... I'm very happy about the way this project is shaping up.
Tomontherun99 - 1/4/2013, 2:08 PM
It would be cool to have a female protagonist. Women are horrifically underused as main protagonists in big-budget blockbusters but with Hunger Games, Brave and now this it's good to see some equality when it comes to movie heroes. Of course there are gonna be people bitching about it and blaming "Feminazis" smh
0bstreperous - 1/4/2013, 5:13 PM
it will be a girl any body who knows shit about starwars knows that originally luke was suppoosed to be a girl and a midget

no lie and 3-po was supposed to be a used car salesman

i wont see it if this is the case i hate hate hate movies made for girls

women suck at comedy and everything else :)
0bstreperous - 1/4/2013, 5:18 PM
it will be a women mark my words
they hired the sissy man writer from little miss sunshine and toy story 3 ( the sissiest of them all)

kathleen kennedy probably thinks "girls should be paid equally blah blah"

if you look at all the media directed at girls who often hog the tv (ala disney channel and nickeloden) and force their brothers to watch this crap you stifle young men to be creative and as imaginative as george lucas was
CoolantTech - 1/4/2013, 6:29 PM
Nice and can we get a HUMAN female jedi this time, the only one iv'e ever seen was one criminally underused Alien female jedi

SamHell - 1/4/2013, 6:57 PM
They let me down too Nomis. Been a fan since birth.
angus666 - 1/4/2013, 7:51 PM
Maybe it's not a human.
mgeoff88 - 1/4/2013, 9:24 PM
@RobLiefeldFan Speak for yourself. Some people actually were honest in saying they weren't on board with this idea.

I'm completely for it. The last two Star Wars trilogies lacked a serious female presence. I mean, two female characters in a series of six films?

@0bstreperous Sci-fi action movies featuring a lead female character is for both women and men. Women get more it out of than us guys do for a different reason, but us guys enjoy those movies too.

Women suck at comedy and everything else? You suck for making that comment! You obviously don't watch a lot of movies and TV shows if you say women are bad at comedy.

And women are great at a lot of things!!! I would like to tell you what women are great at, but that would take a very long time. :)
GrayMatter - 1/4/2013, 10:37 PM
I would laugh if the hint wasn't on the MALE part of the sentence, but on the STAR part.

So in other words, they're not planning for the lead to be a male star, it's going to be a male unknown.

But I'm more surprised that people are taking this guy seriously. Sciretta is a douche who just baits for clicks/links. It there is a female lead, it would just mean that he got lucky with his BS-ing for hits.
indigobolt956 - 1/5/2013, 12:35 AM
@LEVITIKUZ
My sentiments exactly!
Whedon ruined the Avengers? It's sad we live in a world where people say Whedon ruined the Avengers, Nolan ruined Batman, Raimi ruined Spider-Man, and Jon Favreau ruined Iron Man. People are idiots.

WOW Durango95 is a moron if you dont like comic book movies stay off comic book movie.com
@AmericanPsycho agreed
Durango95 get out of here .....get the hell out of here
