Full List Of "Watchmen Directors Cut" Additions

A blogger named Ulysses over at AICN got a look at the directors cut of "Watchmen" and sent them this list..
Its pretty much a breakdown of everything Ulysses can remember that has been added or altered from the theatrical version of the movie. Obviously this contains massive SPOILERS, so if you want to watch the movie with no prior knowledge of the new stuff, give this a miss..

" I was luckily enough to get to see the 3 hour director's cut of Watchmen yesterday and I want to give you short review with a list of changes I noticed.

First thing is first not all the changes are directly from the comic. A few extensions of scenes are entirely made up. A few of the new scenes are just same situation and location but different dialouge (good though and true to the spirit of the scene from the comic book and to the characters themselves.) Most of the changes bring it dead on with comic. Added monolouge and dialouge here and there.

I would rate the theatrical cut an 8 and this 3hr cut a 10

Here's a list of changes that I noticed:

1. At the end of Rorschach's search of the comedian's apartment. Two cops enter, he knocks one of the cops out and jumps out the window as the other cop is firing his gun at him.

2. Rorschach has more comic book monolouge, throughout the movie. Though I'm only going to mention it once. (nothing but the good stuff too.)

3. Dan and Holis's visit is extended by seeing roschrach on TV. Hollis comments "It didn't stop him." (refering to the keane act.)

4. More scenes from the comic such as:

-- Before they walk into the alley we are introduced to the scene by the news vendor talking to Seymour delivering his papers.

-- When Jon says "leave me alone" everyone in the room disappears. Leaving him alone.

-- Cut back to Laurie and Dan at the end of the fight.

-- Laurie decides to go back to the military base and Dan meets with Hollis; they watch TV and learn of Jon's departure. Dan says laurie doesn't know. Cut to Jon on Mars and his story.

--The only major difference in this scene that I can remember is Jon talks about his symbol, slightly varied from the comic he says,"The boys in marketing wanted me to have a symbol. I said if I should have a symbol it shall be one I respect."

--Next scene is Laurie getting interrogated at the military base. They discover that Jon is on Mars and Laurie escapes and decides to go stay with Dan.

5. Rorschach has more dialogue from the comic with Dr. Malcom. Also in his story of the girl, the murder is shown as in the comic - walking outside, asking his dogs to bark, when they don't he draws his gun and enters the building.

6. Rorschach and Laurie argue on the rooftop of the jail; Rorschach more or less calls Laurie a whore. They escape.

7. Jon and Laurie begin their conversation as they did in the comic: "You're going to tell me you have been having an affair with Dan".

8. A few more interesting changes, happen.

9. Oh and Hollis talks on the phone with Sally, only to be interrupted by knocks at the door. He has a great montage death scene. They also explain why the knot heads go there at an earlier point.

10. In the bar, Dan sees the news of Hollis's death by knot heads and beats up one in the bar (knocks out like all of his front teeth. pretty brutal)."

An this baby needs buying!!!!
LEEE777 - 7/2/2009, 11:06 AM
Agreed LEEE, Watchmen was visually amazing and very true to the source material. Squid or no squid.
longbowhunter - 7/2/2009, 11:10 AM
@ longbowhunter

people that complained about the squid should relax. the ending they put in made alot more sense, actually. and it was a little more believable. and its not like anyone even fought the squid. it showed up and promptly exploded. i don't get what the fascination with it is. if there was some kind of giant fight scene against it, then i could see, but there wasn't.
CorndogBurglar - 7/2/2009, 11:25 AM
I hear ya' CorndogBurglar. The movie still ended with the world united against an outside threat.
longbowhunter - 7/2/2009, 11:35 AM
With as long as this movie turned out to be, I wonder why they didn't just leave this stuff in there anyway?
adamant877 - 7/2/2009, 11:44 AM
Seems worth it.. Thought the theatrical release was pretty good.. This should add a little more..

BaronBubba - 7/2/2009, 12:36 PM
Yep the movie was a MASTERPIECE!

No wonder FOX wanted a piece! Didn't have faith in you know what! Lucky b*stards got away with it though lol!

I just wish all COMIC BOOK movies would use WATCHMEN as the bar , THE BAR THEY SHOULD TRY AND REACH!!! ; )

LEEE777 - 7/2/2009, 12:37 PM
it was a great movie in the cinema and this extended cut should be even better on blu-ray!

i dont get what people see was wrong with this film! who cares about the squid ending!?! the films ending was much more believable and was improved with the addition of Nite Owl seeing Rorschachs death and then attacking Veidt. It also cut out a lot of the boring un necessary bits from the graphic novel-Zack Snyder did a great job!
JoshW - 7/2/2009, 12:43 PM
i want it :)
tyko450 - 7/2/2009, 12:56 PM
giving this article a miss. Want to enjoy the experience with minimal spoilage knowledge
ManhuntersBastardChild - 7/2/2009, 1:04 PM
The bar IS and Always Will Be - Batman TDK.

I am bummed they didn't do an "alternate ending" but I'll still buy this movie anyway.
redrum010 - 7/2/2009, 1:48 PM
Adamant- I think they cut out the scenes so the movie would be less than 3 hours. I think it would be a huge turnaway if people read that a movie is 3+ hrs. The average person doesnt have the attention span to sit through that unless they have a big investment in the story, like Watchmen fans did, know what I mean? A lot of these scenes were from the book that were not really necessary for the on-screen edition because of time constraints, though when your trying to fill a dozen or so issues with of material, like in comics, the filler is welcome :)
Shadowelfz - 7/2/2009, 1:51 PM
TDK got nothing on WATCHMEN!!!

Well except box office! ; D

Hell, i love 'em both anyways!!!

WARNER should i say then, HAS RAISED THE BAR! ; )
LEEE777 - 7/2/2009, 2:04 PM
nice - sounds like great stuff. the reason why the movie didn't have this 20 extra mins. is because a lot of studios give the director final cut of a movie as long as they keep the runtime below like 2h 45 mins. or so. So Snyder kept this puppy safe and didn't want any more studio interference - hence the DVD bringing the rest in.

I can't wait for this thing. I'm downloading the theatrical cut to watch it again this week and then I'm buying the Director's Cut the morning this thing hits.

Best film of the year so far.
Keven - 7/2/2009, 2:05 PM

sauron93 - 7/2/2009, 3:40 PM
did they even film a squid ending? i hope so becaus ethat would be one helluva interesting deleted scene!
JoshW - 7/2/2009, 4:14 PM
Screw the dark knight, watchmen is where its at!!
Why everone says its the best is beyond me it was good don't get me wrong but watchmen is the real deal
darthstern - 7/2/2009, 4:36 PM
Im not sure which i preferred between THE DARK KNIGHT and WATCHMEN. I think it must be Watchmen because that's one of the only film that I have ever seen that I wanted to go and watch again right away (which I did on the net) so yeah WATCHMEN is so far THE GREATEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER!!!
JoshW - 7/2/2009, 4:42 PM
I've got a boner

Plus, I'm pretty excited about the director's cut.
BillyBlack - 7/2/2009, 4:56 PM
Iron Man comes close to being my fave comic book movie though as does Spider-Man 2.1 (the directors cut)
JoshW - 7/2/2009, 5:01 PM
this watchmen ending in the movie..is way better than the squid ending
Anil Rickly - 7/2/2009, 5:07 PM
They should include the squid if only as an alternate ending. The ending in the movie was stupid. It completely changed the entire meaning of the story. And if the squid ending was so bad, why has the book remained in its status recognized as one of the greatest comics ever by virtually every periodical or list of great literature of the 20th century WITH that ending?
comicb00kguy - 7/2/2009, 5:52 PM
@ comicbookguy

i don't think the ending changed anything what so ever, man. the world was united against a common threat, veidt was still the big bad. (but when you think about it, he saved the world, so is he really that bad?) no meaning was changed, the only difference was that it was manhattan's energy that was used and not a giant man made squid
CorndogBurglar - 7/2/2009, 6:48 PM
and i agree with you guys that said it, watchmen was the better movie than the dark knight. hell, i even enjoyed iron man more. but its definately 3rd because its still a hell of a movie. i just don't get how people can complain about plot holes, yet hold dark knight on a pedestal like it didn't have any holes...
CorndogBurglar - 7/2/2009, 6:50 PM
Preach it brother!!!
darthstern - 7/2/2009, 7:53 PM
good they will finally show hollis' death. that was such a turning point for dan and a good nod at some of the story's themes, that i was so surprised they didnt have it in the original cut
JeremyBentham - 7/2/2009, 8:07 PM
Seriously, I gotta ask, why 45 votes thumbs down, this is awesome news!
J. "Falcon" Ayers - 7/2/2009, 8:18 PM
Ayers, the 45 downs are because of the squid lovers. They wanted to see "the massive tentacles wrapping around all, slimy and grasping all in sight, as it death throes puncture the innocent people around them."

Thats how a person I know, a squid lover, discussed how it should have been. I said it sounded like [frick]ed up japanese tentacle cartoons... And he said "so?"
BaronBubba - 7/2/2009, 8:32 PM
idk guys there are two thing that make IRON MAN, SPIDER-MAN 2, X-MEN 2, THE DARK KNIGHT ARE ALL MY FAV COMIC MOVIES OTHER THAN SHIT LIKE CROW, SIN CITY. two things about WATCHMEN though make it shitty in my mind....GOODE with his weird "accent" thing sucked! and the ending in my opinion, you wanna take out the SQUID SNYDER? FINE! but if "the world" thinks that DR. MANHATTAN is really responsible, everyone would destroy america as one...the entire world against us. all b.c WE BACKED DR. MANHATTAN so much, NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULDNT THINK IT WAS SOME CRAZY AMERICAN CONSPIRACY. he helped win AMERICA THE VIETNAM WAR for [frick]s sake. even if he did go ape shit on the "world" it would still come back to AMERICA taking major ammounts of destruction still, from every direction. the world would blame us and him! so even if the DOC "left earth to go somewhere and play god" that would ensure his release from punishment. no matter how you try to rationalize it SNYDER [frick]ed that ending up!
dellamorte1872 - 7/2/2009, 9:19 PM
The Watchmen was good, but I think the Dark Knight was way better. Part of the reason why is because Watchmen was so closely adapted to the comics it felt like I was reading through the series for the fourth time. I knew what was coming every time. As such, adaptations either way is like a double-edged sword; if they are too close to the movies there no surprises or cool revelations to the people who've read the comic before. At the same time, if they are too loose they can diverge from the source so much the characters and plot is unnrecognizable (for example Wolverine). I think a healthy medium is best, like the Dark Knight. Nolan kept the spirit and essence of the comics, but put his own spin and kept things fresh and interesting. I really didnt know what was going to happen next in the theaters (especially with the Jokers erratic behavior).
Shadowelfz - 7/2/2009, 9:21 PM
Keven...humper dumper doo!
