Could the Unknown Villain in The Avengers Actually be....the Red Skull?

The description for upcoming Heroclix toys, based off the upcoming Avengers movie, may have finally revealed who the mysterious second villain is. Read on for the details!

OK, so we all know that Loki is the main villain in The Avengers . But what we haven;t been able to determine is, who is the other villain(s)? The most popular theories have been Thanos, Annillus, Skrulls/Kree or some other alien race. Well, we may now have an answer. Now before I continue, this is not my personal opinion. I found this information and decided to let the masses decide. I went on to bigbadtoystore.com and saw on their main page that they had Avengers Heroclix available for pre-order. Here's the description for the Countertop Display:

So my question to everyone is: did Hasbro just reveal who the villain is through a product description? Because if you'll remember at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger SPOILERS! Red Skull is "transported" into another realm (Asgard or another yet to be introduced realm). END SPOILERS! Could Loki have met the Red Skull there and decide to team-up with him to take down the Avengers? Sound off below!

I don't think this is a tie in to the movie, is it? If it is, that is interesting but it sounds like it's just using the Avengers as a tie in to sell Hero Clix. I'm not familiar with them though so who knows.

It would be great to hint at Red Skull being in another realm and meeting Loki.

Hmm...I don't think it's Red Skull. It just seems a bit of a let down if it is. I am still going with Annihilus and that Loki got transported to the negative zone at the end of Thor.
I think theese toys are tie-ins the the respective solo movies and not The Avengers itself.

good article but I doubt it, they probably just put the wrong description on something, because if you notice, in Thor, Loki is the villain, in Captain America, Red Skull is the villain. No Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hulk, or Black Widow, mentioned in the description either. So they probably meant to have that description on something else that was just for Thor and Captain America. Although who knows... ;)

I think this could be true if Hugo Weaving denied he would return. Because think, Fury was recruiting the Avengers way before Loki become a threat and in the NYCC footage Widow said that SHIELD was protecting Banner/Hulk from any other agency or the army or whatever. So technically there is way more than we actually don't know which will be covered in the film, Fury had to recruiting them for someone or something else.

It was an idea a few of us had bandied about. Mainly because of the significance of the Red Skull disappearing into the 9 realms specifically. But I also thought The Leader would have been a great possibility...we shall have to see

Maybe it's revealed Loki entrusted the power gem to Red Skull for some Hydra support at the end of the movie and that Red Skull is back and now has even more of the godlike power he craved.

Heroclix is doing a ton of stuff in 2012. One thing they are doing is a Guardians of the Galaxy release which has Galactus (still owned by 20th Century Fox no doubt), the Watcher (probably not owned by anyone) and throw away characters like Nova. Another thing they are doing (which the author is referencing in the article) is an Avengers movie release around April which has most of the characters from all the movies leading up to the Avengers, of course Red Skull is going to be in there because he was in the Captain America movie.
I really don’t think that has anything to do with the Avengers movie to be honest, the big draw during 2012 is going to be an 8 month tournament based around the Infinity Gauntlet story. This tournament they have planned is larger than anything I have ever seen them do before, so if you are looking towards Heroclix to foreshadow what Marvel may be up to (which would actually be pretty smart), I think we are back to Thanos. The timing is too coincidental.
They usually do Heroclix releases based on current stories in the comics, why break with the trend and do an 8 month tournament (which is unprecedented) about a story from 1991 (in 2011 I would say ok, it is the 20 year anniversary but in 2012?) when they could do any number of new stuff? Also if they wanted to go retro, they could have done a Secret Wars set release, I am pretty sure Secret Wars was more popular than the Infinity Gauntlet story.

i don't think so,when they released captain america the first avenger toyline it featured captain britain,crossbones & winter soldier action figures.

May just be tied into this line because of Captain America being recently released, but who knows. The Red Skull could cameo in the film, I suppose.

@Zorun: Secret Wars is in no way more popular than the Infinity Gauntlet Storyline. IG has been recently retold in an Avengers graphic novel, featured in video games, and shown in the Thor movie. Secret Wars has vanished into Marvel's history never to be spoken of again unless talking about the Venom symbiote or shown in a few episodes of that 90's Spider-Man cartoon. There's something called Secret War, but that has no relation to the Secret Wars storyline.

i like how you put spoilers in your description of the captain america ending but not in the article main title. i dont care about spoilers but it is a douchie thing to do to people who don't like spoilers.

I don't think it will be redskull, Hugo Weaving said he didn't want to do these types of rolls anymore and i don't think marvel would want to venture into his character anymore at this time. He was evil and what not all through the first avenger. That is unlike loki who you got to see why he turned into a villain and what drove him to it. now this is the movie where he gets to go all out bad on the world.

@Luminus, not trying to start the story arc war of the century... But many of us over thirty remember Secret Wars as Marvels best tie in story to date. And it was a huge deal in the 80's. There was a toy line launched just over the comic series, way before any cartoons or any other media incarnations were created.

I get what you are saying as far as continuity, Secret Wars is really not talked about in current Marvel story lines. But 25 years ago it was on the news. Toys, lunch boxes, even friggin beach towels. There is no way Infinity Gauntlet had that kind of media hype.

i would say so, back when they anounced avengers, they said that red skull and loki were cast or at least in it
