Move Over PIXELS, Warner Brothers To Produce SPACE INVADERS Film

Well THIS should be interesting... It seems as if we'll see some 8-bit aliens in todays graphics, as Warner Brothers has nabbed the rights to classic arcade game Space Invaders. While they don't have a director yet, they have some producers signed on, which you can see after the jump!

Unfortunately, this will cost more than a couple of quarters to see. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy classic arcade game Space Invaders as much as the next person, but it seems as if Hollywood is running out of ideas. Read on below to see who's signed on to produce the upcoming film project, as well as some other films they've produced!

According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. Pictures has gotten a hold of film rights to the classic 1980s arcade game "Space Invaders," which has recruited some risky producers, for what will be a risky movie.

Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Winter's Tale), Joby Harold (Awake), as well as Tory Tunnell (Holy Rollers) have all signed on as producers of the film. What are your thoughts of the project? Do you have hope for the film? Whatever your answers are, leave them in the comments below, and to check out the original article, you can find a link to it below at The Wrap!

Space Invaders is a two-dimensional shooter game in which the player controls a laser cannon by moving it across the bottom of the screen and firing at descending aliens. The player defeats an alien, and earns points, by shooting it with the laser cannon. As more aliens are defeated, the aliens' movementspeed up. Defeating the aliens brings another wave that is more difficult, a loop which can continue without end. The aliens attempt to destroy the cannon by firing at it while they approach the bottom of the screen. If they reach the bottom, the alien invasion is successful and it's game over for you.

Space Invaders is an arcade video game developed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978. It was originally manufactured and sold by Taito in Japan, and was later licensed for production in the United States by the Midway division of Bally.

This is gonna be a generic big budget alien blockbuster film with bad actors, like Battleship. Ugh.
Mrcool210 - 7/18/2014, 2:20 PM
Space invaders the movie? Seriously? Here i thought battlship was desperate.

Duck Hunt is also getting a dark, gritty and realistic movie
MrMartinMarvel - 7/18/2014, 2:27 PM
I'd like to think they might do something cool with this, but I know deep down that Abary probably just perfectly described what this movie will be.

Unless they have a damn good plot or pitch, I think it's safe to say that Warner Bros. is trying to sweep up extra money. I know it's been stated a lot, but the film industry is very greedy and frugal. Film in general use to be about the art and the craft. Sure, you have to make something that will make good profit and I know that we live in a world where storytelling has existed for over 100 years, which means there aren't that much original ideas, but come on, even the general audience that only like to see explosions and good special effects get tired of some these. Warner Bros., you already have a new Hobbit film, Dawn of Justice, and another Harry Potter film on the way in addition with almost about 20 films each year. Stop milking it.

A whole movie about fighting monsters in space, could be cool. It' basically an expansion of the space battles in Star Wars. They could have a great plot there. A movie about the soldiers on the front line of an attack on earth.
DCGuy - 7/18/2014, 2:56 PM
Imma give this a chance...
Alphadog - 7/18/2014, 3:00 PM
Come on people, be creative. You're always talking about Hollywood being out of ideas but you yourselves can't find a way to adapt Space Invaders into a movie? Hipocrites. Not just that, close minded hypocrites. I'm already getting ideas for how to do a movie like this.
Superior - 7/18/2014, 3:02 PM
@Alphadog

It's all about the execution and how it's done.

E.T. did pretty good as a movie even if the video game was terrible.

I want my [frick]ing PACMAN movie!!! Is it too much to ask?
Insomnia - 7/18/2014, 3:17 PM
I can list a lot of games that would be more suited as Space Invaders. I don't really dissqualify the chance of have a good script, but what would it really share with the game, more then the actual tittle.

Alan Wake
Megaman
Fire emblem
Legend of Zelda
Metroid Prime
Halo
Gears of Wars
Haff Life
Heroes of Might and Magic (just take the storyline from some campangis and make it into movieform)

Gandhi - 7/18/2014, 3:23 PM
Legend of Zelda can't be live action! unless they find a way to do it without needing Link to talk

Gears of War on the other hand... The Rock could surely be there...

Imagine this. A few decades in the future humanity has started to master space travel and has began to travel to other planets from a day to day bases but has yet to find other civilizations. One day a space telescope notices strange objects flying in space. Soon enough it discovers that they are alien ships. The first contact has started and just as we feared the goverment somehow discovers that the aliens are going to attack us. They build an army made out of two things, somekind of machines that create force fields in the middle of space and spaceships designed around a laser cannon. The main character is one of the millions of pilots of those cannon ships. We see his side of the battle and him discovering things about this species. This is just the first idea.
Alphadog - 7/18/2014, 3:30 PM
The cannon ships would be like the vehicle mode for Shockave in the fall of cybertron game. The force fields would be kind of like the ship from Sunshine except that it creates an extended forcefield. The spaceships that are invading are actually the alien species that has the form of a spaceship, animal thing. It's like the game. The whole movie would be set in space except for the beginning. We could also see the goverment somehow but they would be in a space station.
sameoldthing - 7/18/2014, 3:35 PM
Don't make aliens look like monsters..make em look "exactly" like the video game.
Giant blocky things that shoot you. Boom!
GAME OVER.
Insomnia - 7/18/2014, 3:39 PM
More suited for movies then spaceinvaders* Gaah, i hate when i type to fast sometimes
Insomnia - 7/18/2014, 3:45 PM
@Alphadog, Your idea of a spaceinvasion movie could be a great way to make into a movie. But that is not a thing that you need a license such as Spaceinvaders for. Even Pacman as Ghandi mention (no matter if it was as a joke or not), would make more sense to buy as a movielicense the Spaceinvaders
BaneSmash - 7/18/2014, 4:14 PM
If this is a hit expect Galaga movie from fox..........
BaneSmash - 7/18/2014, 4:16 PM
Or a centipede movie!
MexicanSuperman - 7/18/2014, 4:34 PM
Hollywood isn't running out of ideas, because there are 100s of oiginal films that come out every year you probably don't support.

Hey Axel Braun.....do Custer's Revenge!
Snooper - 7/18/2014, 6:32 PM
If they make it a Duke Nukemesque cheese 80s thing itd work.
Nubase - 7/19/2014, 2:06 AM
This movie will be a popcorn movie only, like GOTG
