Star Trek Countdown: An Interview with Kurtzman & Orci

One of the most intriguing comics that IDW has launched since its acquisition of the Star Trek license from Paramount is the four-issue mini-series Star Trek: Countdown, which serves as a prequel to the prequel of the original series, taking place post-Nemesis (it’s actually not as confusing as it sounds).

“This movie is an interesting paradox in that it’s both a prequel that introduces new audiences to Kirk, Spock and the gang,” says screenwriter Alex Kurtzman, who along with partner Roberto Orci helped to develop the scenario for the comic that was fleshed out by writer Mike Johnson, “and also a sequel if you’re a fan of everything in that the events of the movie are somewhat a result of the action of Leonard Nimoy’s Mr. Spock, and the last time we saw him in continuity that is referred to by fans as canon.”
Adds Orci, “So the prequel comics are a way to connect what was the series that got us into the show and allowed us to go through the next phase of the show, which was Star Trek: The Next Generation. The last time you saw Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek continuity was in Star Trek: The Next Generation [the two-part 'Unification'] so the idea of connecting that material to our movie, just as a fan, was something we wanted to do. The entire continuity of Star Trek prior to our movie is necessary for our movie to exist; it is literally caused by continuity and the comics are a way to make that patently clear.”
