Zack Snyder Talks Realistic Superman in MAN OF STEEL and Marvel/DC Competition

In a new interview with Forbes, Batman vs. Superman director Zack Snyder spoke on length about a variety of topics, including his controversial film Sucker Punch and his 'feud' with Terry Gilliam (which he found "ludicrous"). One of the more interesting things Snyder talked about was the reaction to his vision of Superman in last year's Man of Steel. "The thing I was surprised about in response to Superman was how everyone clings to the Christopher Reeve version of Superman, you know? How tightly they cling to those ideas, not really the comic book version, but more the movie version… if you really analyze the comic book version of Superman, he’s killed, he’s done all the things - I guess the rules that people associate with Superman in the movie world are not the rules that really apply to him in the comic book world, because those rules are different. It’s just funny to see people really taking it personally… because I made him real, you know, I made him feel, or made consequences [in] the world. I really wanted to show the violence is real, people get killed or get hurt, and it’s not fun or funny. And I guess for me, it was like I wanted a hero in Superman that was a real hero and sort of reflected the world we live in now…"

Forbes brought up an interesting point on a possible perception of competitiveness between Marvel and DC, where Snyder admitted he's "as interested in going to the Marvel Universe as anybody". "Look, I’m a fan of the Marvel movies… and the thing that’s awesome is, we make a different movie. We have a different product than them, although they both exist in sort of the superhero world, which is great. I think that those are the opportunities. That’s what you get at the movies, you get a chance to go to all these different worlds. From my point of view, we definitely don’t have any animosity or anything of that nature. We’re all in this big business together, and we hope people are interested in the adventures that we put up on screen. And I do believe it’s infectious, and the next weekend you’re like, 'You know what? Let’s go do that again, that was awesome. We saw a cool movie, maybe we’ll get another cool movie.'"

The untitled Man of Steel sequel, directed by Snyder and starring Henry Cavill,
 Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot and Jesse Eisenberg is released on May 6, 2016.

Get ready for 15 pages of the same bullshit. But yes, Superman killed and DC/Marvel feud is stupid.
SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 10:55 PM
I'm fine with Superman killing Zod. I mean what was he supposed to do, let him live?
Mrcool210 - 4/17/2014, 10:56 PM
his vision of superman was very mixed between fans, im guessing his vision of batman and wonder woman will be too. I like man of steel, but im really excited for BM/SM mainly for ben affleck and the new writer they got. lets hope they knock it out of the park

Prime - 4/17/2014, 10:58 PM

SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:03 PM
@Prime

Almost an hour.
Prime - 4/17/2014, 11:03 PM
You know...now that I think about it, the only Superhero that hasn't killed in a CBM has been Spider-Man. All the rest have. Yes that includes Batman. Think about it. Thor, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Hulk probably has, ect. The only ones I'm unsure of are the FF....but we don't talk about FF.
Prime - 4/17/2014, 11:04 PM

SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:06 PM

@Prime

No problem. Can't wait to see the suits.

batz11 - 4/17/2014, 11:20 PM
I really didn't understand the outrage with Supes killing Zod...right, he did kill in the comics and um, Superman 2, think most believe Zod was gonna be dead after thrown into the frozen abyss...
GenerationX - 4/17/2014, 11:21 PM
I like his version of Superman but he doesn't need to be so dark and serious. He doesn't need to make kids or people afraid of him. I want to see a lighter, friendlier Superman in the sequel
mbembet - 4/17/2014, 11:21 PM
snyder the man of shit
SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:23 PM
@batz11

Not to mention, he showed no signs of remorse when he killed Zod. Meanwhile, in Man of Steel...

Prime - 4/17/2014, 11:23 PM
@mbembet yeah we get it, you don't like Superman...
Prime - 4/17/2014, 11:26 PM
MOS problems boiled down to Goyers shitty writing.
mbembet - 4/17/2014, 11:26 PM
@prime wrong i love superman i hate cavill man of shit
BenderBendingRodriguez - 4/17/2014, 11:27 PM

SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:28 PM
@mbembet

Man of Steel may have had problems, but Cavill wasn't one of them.
Prime - 4/17/2014, 11:31 PM
@mbembet You are the only one, since even the people who hate the movie love Cavill. And why do you hate this Superman anyway?
ALegendaryPanda - 4/17/2014, 11:32 PM
I think most of the haters are asleep right now lol
mbembet - 4/17/2014, 11:34 PM
@prime you call that superman? i call it dark brooding emo retard alien reeves was superman cavill is man of shit lol
sameoldthing - 4/17/2014, 11:34 PM
MOS was pretty damn good but MARVEL is waaay ahead of DC/WB in terms of all around quality films.
BaneSmash - 4/17/2014, 11:34 PM
What's so funny about that Bender? That shit is getting annoying.
BaneSmash - 4/17/2014, 11:36 PM
Mbembet.......... STFU!
SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:36 PM
@sameoldthing

Marvel may have more good films, but DC have better films.

Then again, that's just my opinion.
BaneSmash - 4/17/2014, 11:37 PM
Quality? IM2 and 3 where pure shit! But critics love shit.
mbembet - 4/17/2014, 11:38 PM

SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:43 PM
@mbembet

No, I mean Batman '89, Superman, Superman 2, Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel and Watchmen
BaneSmash - 4/17/2014, 11:44 PM
I'll still don't see the hype in tws........... I was hoping to be on the edge of my seat! I lie, I was ready to go and ask for my money back.
SonGoku - 4/17/2014, 11:44 PM
Not to mention nearly all of the DC animated films.
Prime - 4/17/2014, 11:44 PM
@mbembet Maybe dark and little brooding ( I didn't see that much) do to Goyers shitty writing, but emo and retarded? Seriously? That I didn't see man. You guys wanted a more flawed Superman and that's what you got. But then again, Superman has never really been perfect, that just come from stupid ignorant assholes who know nothing of the Superman lure. But I digress....So this is more flawed version of Superman, but Superman nevertheless. And I'm sure maybe in time, he will turn into All Star Superman...but you warent gonna get that in the first movie.
ALegendaryPanda - 4/17/2014, 11:45 PM

Because mbembet that's why.
