Ghost Rider 2 to be Scarier

Using Goyer's R-rated script to scare the kiddies, although they may go the PG-13 route...
Collider spoke to David S. Goyer the other day about his new TV show, "FlashForward." He took time to talk about "Ghost Rider 2."

Goyer confirmed that he’ll produce and Nicolas Cage will star in the sequel.

“I’m coming on as a producer, and we’re basically doing a polish of my nine year-old script,” said Goyer, referring to the script he wrote years ago for Stephen Norrington to direct, before Mark Steven Johnson came on board and took the Rider in a quirkier direction.

Goyer’s original script was apparently “definitely written as a hard R. It was a Blade-type film. Now they want it to be PG-13. But... 'The Dark Knight' has come out and I like to say that it was skirting the bleeding edge of PG-13, so people’s concepts of what a PG-13 movie could be [may have changed].”

Goyer's original script for "Ghost Rider" things seem to get very weird very quickly with the demon Zarathos running around and causing havoc in the swampy locales of Louisiana.

With "Blade" and "Batman Begins" under his belt, let's hope this is not another "Trinity."

I'm glad they didn't decide to reboot. Just need some cool villains.
BmanHall - 10/2/2009, 9:12 AM
I agree...they butchered the origin story but it was entertaining enough to warrent another try :)
teabag - 10/2/2009, 9:14 AM
lol funny pic! heh heh :D
@BmanHall & teabag@ but yeah i agree with you guys.
prototype 3D - 10/2/2009, 9:23 AM
Hey, not fair! Deadpool is the only Marvel character that's allowed to sport a motorbike!

Deadpool Scooter Pictures, Images and Photos
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 9:26 AM
I'm all up for Goyer writing Ghost Rider 2 as long as he hands it to someone else to re-write it uh... i mean "polish" it.
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 9:46 AM
..ahahaha. i love deadpool.
InFamouslyCool - 10/2/2009, 9:48 AM
@ teabag: True, they did butcher the his origin, but it's salvageable.

@ MultiPurposePoni: Haha, I remember reading Deadpool riding around on a scooter.
BmanHall - 10/2/2009, 9:49 AM
SO ZARATHOS WILL BE JOHNNY BLAZES ALTER EGO? OR SEPERATE?, I HAD A IDEA A WHILE BACK..WHAT IF MEPHISTO CAPTURED ZARATHOS'S POWER IN A CRYSTAL AND ONCE IN A WHILE MEPHISTO WOULD ENDOW SOME OF ITS POWER INTO A MORTAL, YET EVERYTIME THE CONTRACT ENDED HE WOULD TAKE IT BACK, FOR FEAR THAT IF TOO MUCH OF ZARATHOS'S POWER WAS FREE IT WOULD ALLOW HIM TO GET OUT, NOW THAT JOHNNY DOESNT WANT TO GIVE IT BACK, MEPHISTO GOES TO DRASTIC EXTREMES AND ENDOWS ANOTHER, BADALINO WITH SOME OF ZARATHOS'S POWER SENDING "VENGENCE" TO TAKE BACK THE POWER BY FORCE.BUT BECAUSE TOO MUCH OF ZARATHOSES POWER WAS OUT ..THE TRUE ZARATHOS GAINED ENTRY INTO OUR WORLD..
GUNSMITH - 10/2/2009, 9:51 AM
Pretty good idea Gun@!
DDD - 10/2/2009, 9:54 AM
All I know is I wanna ride that real bike they made for GR in the movie! That thing was plain badass!

I mean the one for GR not Johnny Blaze but Blazes bike was really badazz too!
DDD - 10/2/2009, 9:55 AM
I agree with BmanHall's first comment. I was really disappointed that we didn't see the true versions of Blackheart and Mephisto. Hopefully Zarathos will bring some more interesting supernatural elements to the table.
Deathlok - 10/2/2009, 9:57 AM
ahhh a "quirkier" direction..Is that what Johnson did?

A slippery euphamism at the very best lol

good article and pic Tbag

Scarier is all well and good but well... how about just BETTER? Could we maybe try that too?

DarthMulder - 10/2/2009, 9:59 AM
@Darth Whoa, whoa, whoa buddy! Better? You're asking a bit much. The way studios have been sh*tting out CBMs, I'll settle for "not worse" than the original :)
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 10:02 AM
The first one had some decent bits. But it was very meh.
Rorschach01 - 10/2/2009, 10:03 AM
No campy stuff this time! GR should be deadly serious!

I don't know why Goyer wrote camp in there. He usually is a pretty witty writer but that GR script was a real clunker but I liked the movie in spite of it!
DDD - 10/2/2009, 10:07 AM
@Ror That was the most blase review of the movie I've heard to date! Impressive, most impressive.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 10:07 AM
@ Multi aww damn your right, that was way off the radar. What was I thinking??

This sounded like good news so I got a little carried away I guess. I'll adjust to the far more realistic expectation of *not worse* lol
DarthMulder - 10/2/2009, 10:10 AM
@Darth Attaboy, remember: the lower your standards are for these movies, the less you're disappointed :) Same goes for women
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 10:12 AM
I kinda like lower-expectation trashy kinda girls...as long as they ain't TOTAL baggers! :D
DDD - 10/2/2009, 10:16 AM
@DDD Hey man, potato mashers need love too :) That's why yo always roll with a friend who has lower standards than you
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 10:18 AM
I loved the look and I loved the bike. And I think they represented his powers pretty ok.

And I have said this before... complain about Cage all you want but I really felt like the writer and director or whatever tried to suffuse the characters with a humanness (is that a word?) that is often all too absent from these movies. The Carpenters??? M&Ms from a coctail glass? Eva Mendes asking a dumbwaiter if she was pretty or not???? Making these characters seem more human is actually a big step for this director that I think many fail to see.
Like it or hate it, someone at least gave that stuff some thought.
DarthMulder - 10/2/2009, 10:21 AM
MultiPurposePoni said: "the lower your standards are for these movies, the less you're disappointed :) Same goes for women"

Words to live by. Well said, brother.
BmanHall - 10/2/2009, 10:23 AM
Darth- IT WAS JELLY BEANS!!!!! Off with this infidel's head!!!
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 10:26 AM
@Bman Thanks man! I have it tattooed across my lower back like all the kids are doing.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 10:26 AM
I mean, the movie would have been much better if they were M&Ms. Who the [frick] eats jelly beans to begin with let alone from a martini glass!!! Plus he had really crappy flavors in it judging from the colors.
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 10:28 AM
I just caught Ghost Rider on tv the other night. Maybe it was because of the myriad bad reviews I had heard, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. Having said that...it wasn't a great show. I hate, let me repeat that...HATE Nicolas Cage. He's had two good roles in his career: H.I. McDonough in Raising Arizona and Castor Troy in Face/Off.

This is one of those films that just NEEDS to be rated R! I'm glad they are not re-booting though. I hope they can salvage the character.
ecksmanfan - 10/2/2009, 10:30 AM
I prefered him in Con-Air than in Face-Off. And i hate Cage too but he was decent in City of Angels. But i think his best performance was in Family Man. Great chemestry between him and Tea Leoni.
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 10:34 AM
@Shaman You liked Con-Air? Really? Bad boy :(

Thanks God you made a good recovery with Family Man :)
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 10:39 AM
lol @ Shaman! my bad jelly beans then. But even if it had been M&M's or even REECES PIECES, the villians still would have stank. I only saw the thing one time

I think this director tends to blow his load (so to speak) on veneer.
He spends all his energy on making it look good and strong action sequences and leaves nothing else for other parts.
DarthMulder - 10/2/2009, 10:46 AM
Am I the only one that thought the SKULL WAS TOO SMALL???

SHAMAN-

YEA!! Something we agree on!! I think Cage is mostly crap as well, but I too liked Con-Air, Face-Off, City of Angels, and Family Man.

Everything else.......crap!
Talontd - 10/2/2009, 11:17 AM
Darth- Dammit, REECES PIECES are awesome! That should have been mine!!!

MultiPurposePoni- Liked it as in didn't mind it. I felt he had a better performance in it than Face-Off. Travolta was better in Face Off than Cage. And yes, Family Man is the best Cage film ever! Can't believe Ratner directed it.

Talontd- Those are definitely his best films ;)
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 11:22 AM
This sounds promising!

@Shaman Oh, ok I'm with you now. I though you meant that Con-Air was a good movie :/ I think Nic needs to stay in the drama genre. Did you see him in Weather Man? A good performance as well as CoA and Family Man
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 11:26 AM
I did not see that yet, i just might check it out! And YES, the man needs to stick to drama!!!
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 11:53 AM
8MM was good..Cage was good....or maybe because it was in the porn industry....i forget :)
teabag - 10/2/2009, 12:10 PM
teabag

I think it was watching Joquin Pheonix get stabbed to dead that made 8mm a decent flick.

Ror01

If memory serves (which it usually doesnt) didn;t you and a friend heckle the shit outta this one at the theater?

Best Cage performance... Trapped in Paradise with John Lovitz. Fkn funny! Raising AZ was the shit too. He should stick to the comedies.
BillyBlack - 10/2/2009, 12:21 PM
Tea- It was the porn.

Billy- Wasn't that fond of Trapped, actually. I remember it letting me down. I think i had sky high hopes about it. And Raising AZ wasn't my cup o' tea ;) But yes, he was decent in both.
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 12:26 PM
Hands down best Nic Cage performance: Leaving Las Vegas.

MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 12:31 PM
Ghost Rider may have sucked, but with Goyer writing it, and going for a darker tone, this might be pretty good!
slimybug - 10/2/2009, 12:36 PM
Part one was horrible but still not as bad as Origins was. At least they had Ghost Rider looking like Ghost rider, every one else was just freakin sad and pathetic. My most hated scene is any time the elemental s are on screen and especially when Blackheart first makes his appearance and is far away and then "Oh No" he is up close and his teeth are showing and his head is tilted like Stewies from family guy and he screams. That was a joke! Horrible movie, and yet still better than Whackerine:Origins which was god awful. I mean not once was someone in their true comic form. pity really
shibazz - 10/2/2009, 12:48 PM
Well atelast they are making a continuation... I liked the first one...

By the way where is any news on hopefully a CONSTANTINE 2
thegreek - 10/2/2009, 1:00 PM
Multi- Yeah, i can see why you and a bunch of people liked it so much.

Trapped was a fun flick, nothing special but good if you catch it on cable. Can't imagine having very high expectations for it ^_^ but I found Cage to be a character to pull for. Something very rare for me in ANY of his movies.

Poni

A great performance, but a total fkn downer. Liz Shue made that movie for me right down to the rape. Hey, can you rape a prostitute? Or is it more like shop lifting?
BillyBlack - 10/2/2009, 1:12 PM
scarier??..whats scary was the acting in the first one..
if they really try they could make ghost rider a really good movie..and i like nic cage but mephisto was horrible..that was not the mephisto i know from comics..or blackheart..ghost rider..epic fail..ghost rider 2 maybe if done right
peterparker420 - 10/2/2009, 1:12 PM
The 1st scared the living piss out of me! How could they get one movie so wrong!?!
Howlett04 - 10/2/2009, 1:41 PM
Howlett04- Yeah i know, the jelly beans were frightningly bad flavors!

Billy- Well i've been a huge fan of Lovits and Dana Carvey and well, i felt both their performances were meh. Good cable catch as you say.
Shaman - 10/2/2009, 1:45 PM
A direct sequel is the way to go. No reboot. They should donthe same with daredevil. It was the same director and he made similiar mistakes but there were good parts. Just witch a few things and get a new director and continue on.
superdog - 10/2/2009, 1:47 PM
BillyBlack: You can't rape the willing :) Just ask teabag
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 2:12 PM
Friend but the 9 years old script by Goyer is not that with Zarathos, is that with Mephisto called Starke...And it's dated 2001.
Cyke89 - 10/2/2009, 2:17 PM
Cool!

NightAvenger4 - 10/2/2009, 2:31 PM
The first movie should have been a hard R movie with a horror movie director(maybe John carpenter) and an actor who doesn't look 20 years older than the character he's trying to play. Still, I have some faith in a sequel.
supermarioworldE - 10/2/2009, 2:37 PM
@BillyBlack.... that is freakin Pricelss! did you make that up? Damn you are a Cock-Azz! I am jealous i dint come up with that one !
shibazz - 10/2/2009, 2:48 PM
Darthmulder - we def see eye to eye on a lot of things!

I'm glad that Nic Cage is a comic book fan, but he's got some weird ideas! Who else thought of him as Superman?! WTF was that?! GR2 just needs to focus a little more on the horror and it'll be fine.

I judge the first one less harshly than most because I understand that MSJ was trying to gear it toward general audiences, rather than having it be a double genre(horror and comic book)niche film!

In light of how much it grossed, I think it was a wise decision, considering that a sequel gets greenlit based on the box office success of the original, not the quality! I also think it played more like a horror film than a superhero film, which to me was a triumph! The tone wasn't TOO far off! Just needed some tweaking...

BillyBlack - 10/2/2009, 3:34 PM
They already had the kid friendly version. Let's bring on the heavy crap!
Tobuttica - 10/2/2009, 3:38 PM
@OSCURO: That would make for a great saga, but WAY too expensive for the studios to even consider :(
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 4:19 PM
Not that I'm the biggest Cage fan, but I did read a recent interview where he said the sequel to ghost rider needs to be way darker then the first. I feel hopeful that they can turn it around this time especially since the first one was seen by a huge non comic book audience. I'm looking forward to it
ASSASSIN666 - 10/2/2009, 4:28 PM
I need more. . . jelly beans
MultiPurposePoni - 10/2/2009, 4:46 PM
VENGEANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KillerOfSaints - 10/2/2009, 5:40 PM
Glad they're not rebooting it... If they did, that would be way to many movies being rebooted, confusing the hell out of non-comic book readers...

There was no problem with the character; I don't think that they could have done a better job on that character or his bike... Reboots need to be just left to the characters that need it like deadpool

StrangemannX09 - 10/2/2009, 7:57 PM
Ive said it before and ill say it again you guys need a rating above PG-13 and lower than R-18+ .... like in Australia we have MA-15+ mature audience.

I didnt mind the first Ghost Rider, it wasnt one of my favourites but you never know a sequel may save the franchise. I will wait and hold my judgement until this movie is made
dancingmonkey08 - 10/3/2009, 7:31 AM
Lose the jellybeans, lose the Carpenters, lose the campy humor, make the villians more like the comic, make it darker and more serious and then we have a good Ghost Rider movie.
MatchesMalone - 10/3/2009, 9:04 AM
Sweeet. Ghost Rider 2. Can't wait.
