After once again coming under fire for 2015's Fantastic Four, filmmaker Josh Trank hit back at fans before deciding to quit social media altogether. Find out what exactly happened after the jump...

It's been five years since Fantastic Four was released, and some "fans" still find it necessary to attack director Josh Trank. When his movie Capone was released earlier this year, the filmmaker gave his side of the story, and it was clear that behind the scenes interference meant we didn't get to see his original vision for the Marvel Comics adaptation.

Whether his version would have been better or worse than what ended up in theaters is irrelevant at this point, but he once again came under fire on social media last night from trolls who clearly have nothing better to do.

After taking flak for both Fantastic Four and his comeback movie Capone, the director clearly had enough of the trolls and shared his "final word" on the 2015 release. As you can see below, he suggested that they "accomplish something interesting w/ your lives," before threatening to knock one troll "the f*ck out."

Later, he deleted both his Twitter and Instagram accounts, clearly deciding he was sick of being harassed for one bad movie in his career that he worked on half a decade ago. We spoke to Trank earlier this year, and it's a great shame to see that he's still coming under fire like this for no reason.

Check out some of Trank's responses below:

Harassing directors online for a movie they made that you didn't like is insanely idiotic and toxic behavior. Retaliating & lashing out in this way is also pretty irresponsible of Trank to do, and makes it seem like he has some serious personal demons. I hope he gets help if he truly needs it.

@tmp3 - Honestly? I think most normal people would lash out. I mean, imagine having to deal with a shit ton of hate day in and day out for no other reason than just a [frick]ing movie you made. People can get really horrid with that shit.

@tmp3 - When it comes to these things, I dont think anyone comes out looking good.

@SnideCut - Well, when the internet gives a bunch of edgy 14 year olds megaphones on twitter, I guess this was bound to happen. "Trank made a bad film 5 years ago? Lets harass the shit out of him on Instagram!"

@tmp3

He needs help. Honestly I kind of think it’s sad.

@regularmovieguy - He said he fell into a depressive state after Chronicle came out. It sounds like he has some serious mental health issues he hasn't taken care of, and using social media is only making it worse.

@tmp3 - Controversial opinion, maybe, but I don't feel like Trank's "personal demons" amount to much. He's got a temper, he's privileged as [frick], and probably substance issues. Yes, I hope he gets help with all that, but none of those come across as a really tortured soul to me. (You didn't say that, but I feel like people try to excuse creatives' bad behavior with this idea that it reflects some kind of deep existential suffering. I just don't see that with Trank.)

@Spock0Clock

I’m sorry, man. I disagree. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate on economics. Neither does depression.

He’s clearly got a few screws loose. And yeah, social media is [frick]ing poison for the most part.

Clearly, the responsible and adult thing to do would ignore the trolls and block out the haters, Rian Johnson seemed to do a pretty good job of that with TLJ. I’m sure it wasn’t easy.

@regularmovieguy - I don't mean that he's too rich to be depressed. I mean he literally was given the golden ticket that so many people dream of, and still talks like he's being oppressed. I called it privileged, but I guess you could speculate about more severe mental issues that (sure) I can't rule out.

But in any case, I'm sure it's a good thing he's off social media for everybody's sake (though I suspect he won't stay gone). Some people can't handle it. I'm sure I couldn't. I get anxious sometimes posting snippets of fan-fiction online, so of course I couldn't handle the onslaught of social media savages turning my work into memes, hand delivered by hashtags to the phone in my pocket.

@Spock0Clock - I don’t know, he said by his own admission he’s always struggled with mental health in that big interview he did with Polygon a few weeks ago, and that he had a rough childhood. It sounds outright self-destructive; punching walls, sleeping with a gun next to his bed out of paranoia, lashing out on twitter trolls like this.

@tmp3 - I don't know the guy's history, and I'm not demeaning anybody's suffering. I think the evidence is Trank needs changes in his life from where it was five years ago, and seemingly where it is recently. But I'm just saying I don't see evidence that those issues are something outside of his control.

Or maybe I'm being too harsh. When I see things that remind me of my own problems, maybe I don't have the kind of sympathy I should.

Spock0Clock - 6/28/2020, 3:12 AM
@TheJustinHammer - Probably right. If someone says "I've got X problem", that's all I need to hear to be pretty sympathetic (at least I think so). But in the absence of a specific claim, I tend to assume their behavior is not reflecting a clinical affliction. I see so many armchair psychiatrists looking to diagnose people online, and I do try to resist that. But I probably go too far in the other direction.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 6/28/2020, 3:30 AM
@TheJustinHammer - As I said, it's surely for the best for Trank to be off social media. He's going to get harassed (and there's no excuse for that), so the further away he is from that, the better.

I'll just say this: I want everybody to endeavor to be better people and to get help when they need it. Whatever percentage of Trank's problems are the first thing or the second thing, I hope he does it.

@tmp3 - it’s true but that’s the world we live in.In an age of access to literally everything & everyone.Its a double edge sword the same way to promote yourself and get yourself out there also opens up the doors to critics & trolls.He shoukd probably stay off of social media anyways if he can’t take the trolls.He should just ignore them instead of trying to argue with them cuz that’s a fight you can’t win.Either that or get thicker skin.

I'm with Trank here honestly. I've seen just how [frick]ing pathetic and dirty the internet can be. Every public figure doesn't have to mince words with these trolls. I'm not a fan of Trank's films but [frick] these bullies because that's what they are.

OT: Beyoncé has a new film coming out on Disney+ called Black is King. I guess that's where the Black Panther 2 rumours came from.
