EXCLUSIVE: Byung-hun Lee - The Stormshadow Interview

Byung-hun Lee is already a big star in Korea, and with his classic good looks and kick-butt role in the live-action G.I. Joe movie, he's ready to become a big deal in outside of of Asia...
CBM: Tell us about your character "Stormshadow"

Byung-hun Lee: Actually, I didn't have any idea of G.I. Joe and Stormshadow because in Asia it is not a well known cartoon. They didn't show it. When I first got the script from my agent, I was not familiar, so, I had to learn about the history of G.I. Joe and especially my character. So, I learned a lot from Stephen, Lorenzo and the other actors and actresses. As you know, Stormshadow has a lot of pride. For example, he doesn't kill anybody without any reason. He's a martial arts expert.

CBM: What martial arts are you involved with. I'm assuming Tae Kwon Do?

Byung-hun Lee: Right. Tae Kwon Do is my main martial art. And there is a little bit of difference between the styles of Snake-eyes and Stormshadow. Snake-eyes (Ray Park) is based on Wu-shu--which is Chinese, and Stormshadow is based on Korean Tae-Kwon-do. So Snake-eyes is more flash and movement, and Stormshadow has simple but strong movement.

CBM: Are you mainly using weapons in your fights? It seems as though Stormshadow always has his swords out.

Byung-hun Lee: I have swords, but I usually use my kicks.

CBM: There has been a lot of criticism of the live-action movie. What would you tell the critics to convince them to see the movie?

Byung-hun Lee: This is a light-hearted movie, and its good to enjoy and have fun. In Japan, Marlon (Wayans) told audience "Better Fasten Seat Belts." I think that was a good speech for this film.

CBM: What did you like best about working with Ray Park?

Byung-hun Lee: In the movie he is the enemy, and we hate each other, but in real life we are really good friends. We had to train a lot together before the production, so we are so close. And he is REALLY good at Martial arts. His movements are so flashy and skillful.

CBM: He said in an interview that you trained 5 days for the climactic fight scene between Snake-eyes and Stormshadow. Is that right?

Byung-hun Lee: Yeah, Yeah, of course. And there are a lot of fight scenes in this movie.

CBM: How about Sienna Miller? What is the relationship between Stormshadow and The Baroness? Is there a love interest there?

Byung-hun Lee: (Laughs) Yeah, actually we talked about that a lot--as a joke. As you know, the relationship between us is... Stormshadow is the Master for her. There is a line I say, "You are my best student." In the press conference in Korea, she (Sienna) talked about that maybe in the sequel there could be romance between Stormshadow and The Baroness.

CBM: What was it like for you to promote this in Korea? You're already well-known there, right?

Byung-hun Lee: It was really great. Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum, Stephen, Lorenzo, they all told me they'd never seen that kind of red carpet at a press conference before. There were a lot of fans and they were freaking out.

CBM: I'm assuming you're signed on for sequels?

Byung-hun Lee: Three. And I would come back to play Stormshadow if they make them.

CBM: Well, thank you for your time.

Byung-hun Lee: It was my honor. Thank you.

lol, sounded like he didnt have a clue...
I like how he kept saying Ray Park use a lot of flashy moves, while his is more meaningful...lol

I wonder if he was jealous of parks, lol
vonstallin - 8/7/2009, 9:20 AM
He is one of the only reasons to see the movie. He gives a good performance in a sea of crap ones. Him, Snake Eyes and Sienna Miller as Baroness keep it away from one star city.
RorMachine - 8/7/2009, 9:22 AM

LEEE777 - 8/7/2009, 10:42 AM
i saw the movie during the midnight showing last night and i wasnt all impressed, to much cgi which it made it look all to fake, so if there is a sequel they will have to sharpen up the effects and make it look more realistic.
cbsmitty2 - 8/7/2009, 10:44 AM
fotc yes its based on a cheesy cartoon but who wants to go see a cheesy live action version? :)

LEEE your getting ahead of yourelf with T3...hell il doubt Gi Joe will get a straight to dvd sequel ;P
teabag - 8/7/2009, 10:49 AM
LEE, one question man., Have you ALREADY seen this movie, GI JOE?
SirJediFrank - 8/7/2009, 10:53 AM
2MORRO @ FRANK! Have you??
LEEE777 - 8/7/2009, 10:58 AM
@Ror-01 i need to know, honestly ... is Sienna Miller's performance that good, does she really not need to use the Accent that helped to define The Baroness? I am not trying to be a smart ass... i am just concerned that she may be just another hot bod with minimal talent that cant even fake a bad Eastern Block accent?
shibazz - 8/7/2009, 10:59 AM
Nah Shib, i thought she did a good job. She hams it up of course, like everyone, but she pulls it off and looks great doing it!
RorMachine - 8/7/2009, 11:25 AM
allllll right, but i am warning you that i am going to go see it today.... but i am not paying for it. I still think if she cant pull the accent then she is a hack.
shibazz - 8/7/2009, 11:28 AM
ITS MILLER TIME!!!
LEEE777 - 8/7/2009, 11:32 AM
Well, she doesn't attempt the accent! But that would have been Stephen Sommertard's decision. She does an American accent fine!!
RorMachine - 8/7/2009, 11:46 AM
No, man, i haven´t .. THAT´S WHY i will keep my comments UNTIL i see the movie!! C´mon man! , yeah, let´s support ComicBookMovies, so they can make more of them. I AGREE. ..BUT i don´t think it is a good idea to say " It WILL be good", if you haven´t seen it!!

go figure, if everyone of us start saying: "Oh! EVERY movie they make is gonna be good!" , then the studios won´t care about quality, but quantity.. and BAM, Batman & Robin remake we´ll get!! lol!

just my $0.02 US dollars,man.
You can say, "Hey I THINK it will be the dark horse etc", but, c´mon, you can´t say "It is gooood!" if you don´t know for sure, not even the critics know!! lol!
SirJediFrank - 8/7/2009, 11:58 AM
Sheesh! It's bad enough Korean foreigners are invading Hollywood and then to hire this dude who had NO clue who Storm Shadow is? Very disappointing!! There are plenty of Korean-Americans who'd die for this role.

I think it's funny that Storm Shadow is doing TaeKwon do and he is a ninja. So we have a Korean Storm Shadow instead of a real Japanese American guy and then of course there's Snake Eyes who's supposed to be a ninja (originally a commando character) and he's doing wushu?? Stupid producers. They don't know any difference.
Fearless - 8/7/2009, 12:03 PM
Please make everything about this shit movie go the f**k away already.
ASSASSIN666 - 8/7/2009, 1:21 PM
its been proven over and over, people liking a movie has nothing to do with sales. if this sells good, which we all know it will, it'll get a sequel
CorndogBurglar - 8/7/2009, 2:47 PM

This film was fun and I can't wait for the sequel!
Xfactorz - 8/8/2009, 5:16 PM
He sounds like a good guy. Glad to know that there will be 4 movies, and not just another trilogy.
necrosage2005 - 8/8/2009, 5:48 PM
errp...saw the movie...wasn't too happy about it...well if they're creating sequels then i hope they should make it better! oh yeah, they should have gotten a better mask for cobra commander.
redskullrevenge - 8/8/2009, 8:53 PM
Kinda of liked it but I have major complaints. Loved Storm Shadow but you have got to make his costume cooler. Would also like to see Storm Shadow romantically involved with the Baroness. The Baroness has so much more chemistry with Storm Shadow than she does with Duke. Snake Eyes was also made to be too powerful in this movie. Hope it's more balanced in the next one.

Long live Cobra.
Cobrafan - 8/8/2009, 10:32 PM
you can read a GI Joe movie review here at http://www.ryce.biz/blog/2009/08/gi-joe-review
Ryce Randy - 8/13/2009, 12:47 PM
this movie was soooo bad. i grew up watching gi joes and this movie was very disappointing. first of duke was horrible i knew tatum channing was going to be a horrible choice. the ninjas were cool but i dont understand why they killed off storm shadow, because if they do make a sequal (i pray that they dont) who is snake eyes suppose to fight? marlon waynes looked ridiculous holding a gun. the baroness was smoking hot but her and duke were once lovers which is bull and she didnt have her russian accent i believe it was like in the cartoon? destro was some weak scotish guy who was in charge of the villans until the very end when cobra finally came to be and oh my that had to have been the worse thing about it. him and the baroness were brother and sister which i dont think happend in the cartoon. dont go see this if your a true gi joe fan, cant beleive i did.
