GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Dave Bautista Says Drax/Thanos MCU Storyline Makes Him "Shake My F***ing Head"

Dave Bautista has never shied away from speaking his mind about how Drax has been portrayed in the MCU, and the actor has now taken aim at the way the hero's desire to kill Thanos was brushed aside.

Dave Bautista is one of the most outspoken actors working in Hollywood today (which is definitely refreshing), and he's certainly not shied away from taking aim at Marvel Studios in recent months.

In 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, it was firmly established that Drax hoped to kill Thanos for the Mad Titan's role in the death of his wife and daughter. However, that subplot was very much forgotten about, and barely factored into movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame

Responding to a fan on Twitter yesterday, the Dune star shared his obvious disappointment.

"That whole Drax, Thanos history seemed to get swept under the rug," Bautista acknowledged. "Always wondered why but every reason I could come up with just makes me shake my f***ing head. It is what it is." Many fans agree with this sentiment, especially as the two characters have such a storied history in the comic books. Ultimately, it seems there just wasn't time to explore this.

Of course, it probably doesn't help that Drax became a comedy character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, something that might have made it harder for fans to buy into his hatred for Thanos. Given how dissatisfied Bautista has seemingly become with his role in the MCU, we're betting Vol. 3 will be his final appearance as Drax (it just depends what James Gunn has planned for him in the threequel).

I dont really care about Drax, but his whole Motivation in Vol.1 was to get to Thanos.

So yeah, this sucked monkey balls.

Dave, never moaning when that paycheck is rolling in but always moaning when one isnt. only last week i was reading how greatful he was for the Drax role and that he was really struggling financially before hand. now he is moaning about not being the star of the show.

@DemonTweeks - thank you. He's like that one lesser iq friend you had in high-school who always had his foot in his mouth. Fun guy but he doesn't think past his nose

@DemonTweeks - Or, you could be both grateful for a role but still pipe up when you disagree with a story element, a plot point or think something is shitty. I can see where he's coming from, but I can also see it maybes wouldn't have worked with comedic Drax so get why they swept it under the rug even though they wrote it into that corner.

@DemonTweeks - This. Clearly he knows his character is checking out in the next GotG so he’s going out without grace.

@DemonTweeks - I mean, it could be both things, though. Economically satisfied, but creatively unhappy.

They should've atleast given him a one-on-one like Wanda and Carol had. He'd probably get swept away right away, but atleast there would've been atleast some recognition of the history of the character.

Hopefully Gunn can give a satisfying wrap-up to it in Volume 3 though.

@bkmeijer - Bro, Ronan killed his family. Thanos would've dropped the "I don't even know who you are" at him too.

@Roodi - yeah most likely. Unlike Wanda, Drax probably wouldn't have even landed a hit against Thanos.

Isn’t this something he should take up with Gunn?

@BlackBeltJones - no Gunn didn’t write Avengers IW and End Game. Marcus and McFeely did. It’s on them and Feige for blowing that char in the end.

@McMurdo - no Gunn planted the seeds by making Drax weaker than his comic counterpart and a total DUNCE in Vol 2.

Gunn also oversaw and approved what was done with the Guardians in IW and Endgame.

@BlackBeltJones - I don’t think Gunn being a comedy character means he couldn’t really fight Thanos. They’d just have had to write him into getting a power up or training or some BS so he can hang with the purple [frick]er. But your absolutely right that Gunn screwed him from the start

Thano's been set up as a Avengers storyline from day 1 not GoTG and Drax storyline.

Dave Bautista needs to move on.

To be fair it was a bit unsatisfactory how things panned out. But also, this feels more like the Russo's fault and not Gunn's.

@Kumkani - Disagree, if Drax was comic accurate then it would be fine.
Gunn made him hugely underpowered and gave him the brain of a 5-year old

@Kumkani - I don’t see it as the Russo’s fault; Gunn established him as a comedic character. It’s not like he even mentions Thanos is Vol.2. He could have left with Nebula at the end! And Drax got revenge on Ronan who actually killed his daughter in the first film!! His talk of Thanos was more of a joke, Drax just can’t be satisfied. I get that Bautista is protecting his character but in the big picture of Infinity War and Endgame his role just isn’t that important.

At no point during either Infinity War or especially Endgame did I find myself thinking, man, we could really use more Drax. He’s a decent peripheral character who was never going to usurp far better and more popular ones just to service his comic roots.

SHould blame his mate Gunn for making his character a bumbling idiot.

Having a massively underpowered Drax, whose every sentence sounds like it's coming from a 5 year old, face off against Thanos would have been awful

I mean Drax is more of a joke, Thanos would one punched his ass to Vormir

Gosh... At this point, I kind of hope Drax dies. I'm getting kind of tired of Bautista constantly doing a runny dump on everything. He is turning into one of those tired and angry old men that yell at clouds. He complains about the MCU, Gunn's writing in Vol 2, Disney and his character, suggests that he doesn't want to be apart of the MCU past Vol. 3, then complains when they hire someone else to do voice work for Drax in What If... The guy is a total wet blanket. It's honestly just getting exhausting.

Yeah it kind of sucks that Drax fell to the wayside, but in the Guardians story, Nebula and Gamora had a much more intimate and complicated relationship with Thanos, which was honestly much more satisfying to see. So understandably in Infinity War / Endgame they would want to flesh out their stories over a simple man with a simple story of revenge. There's only so much screen time for so many plots, and Drax's story is one of the least important.

Having said that, I do hope Gunn gives Drax some period of reflection in Vol. 3 to wrap up the character before hopefully killing him off.

@TanukiTrooper - I feel like he thought this would spin-off into some franchise for him, but realistically it’s like youre a relatively new actor with low star power playing a character that was a part of a c-tier team no way In hell you were about to get the killing blow or a movie

This dude is the Ray Fisher of Marvel at this point. Keeps complaining, when in reality, it was Marvel who put him on the map acting wise.
