GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Clarifies THAT Groot Moment From The End Of The Movie - SPOILERS GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Clarifies THAT Groot Moment From The End Of The Movie - SPOILERS

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 features a couple of big Groot moments, but one in particular has led to a lot of discussion about how we were supposed to interpret the beloved tree-alien's final line.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing worldwide, but if you haven't seen the movie yet, be aware that spoilers follow from this point on.

Some feel that Groot, the sentient tree-alien who has become one of the most beloved members of the team, was somewhat sidelined in GOTG Vol. 3, but he does get a few moments to shine, one of which has led to a lot of discussion online.

Right at the end of the film, after Adam Warlock rescues Peter Quill and Rocket takes over as Captain, the Guardians stand in a circle saluting their new leader. Then, for the first time ever, Groot says something other than "I am Groot" when he tells his friends, "I love you guys."

The others don't react, which has led to speculation that only we, the audience, actually heard those words because we understand Groot now, just like Gamora had started to after spending enough time with him ("it was great working with you, too").

io9 proposed this theory in an article, and director James Gunn confirmed that, yes, this is "exactly what it means" on Twitter.

This makes a lot more sense than Groot just suddenly learning how or deciding to speak in full sentences, and adds another emotional layer to an already heart-warming scene.

How did you guys interpret this moment on first watch? Let us know in the comments section down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Groot was definitely about that action this time around. No longer taking the peaceful approach to these villains. He can now stand up for himself and has different abilities making him a huge asset to the team.

@SonOfAGif - Groot was always kinda violent

@TheHumanSpider2 - OG Groot was peaceful. He only initiated violence to defend Rocket and his friends. Baby Groot showed signs of acting on his own emotions rather than being commanded to do so. And Groot we saw in Guardians 3 was basically the muscle and he was definitely about it as we saw multiple times when he was battling enemies without being told to do so.

@SonOfAGif - The Groot in Vol.3 is basically the same, he gets violent when Quill tells him to get violent, exactly like in Vol.1

I understand James has said time and time again this is Groot's son, but considering what we see in the movies, I think is the same being.

@TheHumanSpider2 -

Psychopath Baby Groot is a one of the many reasons I love Vol 2.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I would say we see plenty of times that it's not the same being - especially since there's never a point where they look exactly like each other. We see a full grown Groot at the end of the film, and he looks completely different from the other Groot. I mean that's the entirety of Gamora's subplot in the film, is for Peter and the audience to accept that this Gamora is a different character - and the same logic applies to this version of Groot.

@SonOfAGif - Groot unloading the blasters with Quill, and that long action shot of the whole team going to town, had me grinning ear to damn ear!

@MosquitoFarmer - The way the Guardians beat Evolutionary's ass was so pleasing. They gave him a jailhouse beat down. When Drax gave him a haymaker to the race and sent him flying and then Quill blasting him out the air was so satisfying.

@SonOfAGif - Amen. That they all were there to deliver a pounding blow to him was definitely oh so satisfying and deserved.

@KelvTwelve - I think the Groot in Guardians 1 was OLD, this Groot seems to be a young adult.
One of the reasons I like his design in this movie is because he looks like a teenager who spends too much time at the gym.

@newhire13 - Obviously, what the writter says goes, if he says Groot is actually a female, she is.
I'm just saying from what we see in the movies, they seem to be the same being.

@AmazingFILMporg - I loved when Groot attempted to rescue Peter and the ice froze his roots. Shows how far he has come along to loving his family.

A subtitle saying ' I am Groot' while he said it would have made that more clear, I think.
KelvTwelve
KelvTwelve - 5/6/2023, 12:51 PM
@rychlec - idk I like it when things like this are left to audience interpretation, rather than their hands being held the entire time. I saw the movie and this was the assumption I had made, especially since it followed after Gamora finally understanding Groot. My girlfriend didn't but I told her, and she liked the theory - only for it to be confirmed today.

newhire13 - 5/6/2023, 7:28 PM
@rychlec - Subtitle? Eh that’s kind of lame lol. Subtitles were never a thing with the Groot character so why bother doing it now? Gunn’s method was immersive and people caught on to right away and loved.

So on Asgard they teach the Asgardian children how to speak/understand (Groot). But Groot has the ability to allow those who are around him for long periods of time to understand him as well. That's a pretty cool concept. Shows the Asgardians were definitely interested in communicating with different species but those very species have the ability to help others understand them over time.

Kaiju Groot right after landing on Counter-Earth was a great moment that I wish we'd seen more of.

Buzz Lightyear Groot was also nice.
SuperiorHeckler
SuperiorHeckler - 5/6/2023, 12:30 PM
@DrReedRichards - Having Groot the size of Mighty Joe Young may pose some problems going forward. The Guardians (or whatever they will be calling the new team) do spend a lot of time running around corridors of various spacecrafts. This new "Kaiju" super-sized Groot will be kinda' awkward. 🫤

DrReedRichards - 5/6/2023, 12:32 PM
@SuperiorHeckler -

I was referring to the sudden growth on Counter-Earth, not his more permanent size at the mid-credits scene. I wasn't a fan of that last one either, but I did enjoy his various versions throughout the movie.

Is that one of the game changing Groot parts?
ObserverIO

I had both thoughts one after the other.

First I was like "Wait, he's suddenly speaking now after all this time?! That's stupidoooohwait, that's probably just them hearing him and understanding him and the movie's translating it."

Then I had a third (and fourth) thought immediately afterwards: "So, why didn't their translators just translate Groot the whole franchise? That's really stupidooohwait, his language probably isn't in the translators since his species is all but extinct"

I'm glad Gunn said this cause that's exactly how I interpreted the scene in the movie and hoped this was true. It's such a great scene!

Vol 1 and Groot's sacrifice is still probably the biggest and best tearjerking moment of the whole Marvel universe.

I was surprised that Gunn actually did not kill anyone off in vol 3, but the decision is growing on me: the great happy ending that all these characters truly deserve. As well as the counterintutive decision to have the GOTG make short work of the High Evolutionary.

My minor qualm is that apart from the initial smackdown with Adam Warlock the GOTG never felt like they had a worthy opponent.

Overall much better than vol. II and a big return to form.

My interpretation is that Groot did start to learn how to speak in our language. But either way I'm fine with whatever take there is.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 5/6/2023, 10:31 PM
The simple explanation is, the Guardians ran into Thor in Infinity War who explained he learn to speak "Groot" as an elective back on Asgard.

Quill and the rest of the Guardians took this course somewhere after the end of Endgame and before Volume 3.

I choose to believe the audience is merely hearing what Groot is actually saying this time instead of "I am Groot". What everyone else hears is "I love you guys" and we finally get to hear it too.
