Moviegoers are hooked on a feeling because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues to exceed expectations, dropping by even less during its second weekend of release than originally reported by analysts.

It's too soon to say whether Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will become the first MCU movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home to top $1 billion at the worldwide box office, but the odds are certainly in its favour.

The official numbers are in and the threequel earned an epic $62.6 million in North America during its second weekend of release. That's an additional $2 million more than the figures reported by analysts on Sunday, and means the movie suffered a 47% drop rather than a 49% one.

2% may not look like much, but that's a big difference and a phenomenal performance for a post-pandemic MCU movie. It also puts James Gunn's MCU farewell in a unique club of Marvel Studios titles that suffered drops of less than 50%; now, it joins Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther

Now, with a $216.5 million domestic haul, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has earned $530.9 million worldwide. We've already told you how that figure eclipses the $465.8 million earned by Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania during its entire theatrical run, and when it comes to these two trilogies, it's clear which of them was the bigger draw for moviegoers.

Initially, much was said about Vol. 3's 78% Rotten Tomatoes score, though that would later rise to 82%. The Audience Score is far more telling, though, as it sits at 94% (the CinemaScore, meanwhile, is an awesome A).

With Fast X set to arrive in theaters this weekend, the movie will inevitably slip to second place, but should still perform well.

"As heart-wrenching as it is hilarious," we said in our review earlier this month, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is James Gunn’s masterstroke and a showcase for both his filmmaking talent and a cast that makes everything about this movie simply awesome. An absolute triumph."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.

It's simple.

Make a good movie, Marvel.

And people will show up.

@CyberNigerian - exactly. People are acting like theaters are still recovering, but it was 2021 when no way home was borderline 2 bil. And we've had success since then with top gun, avatar 2, jurassic world, and now super Mario all breaking a billion.

Audiences are going to the theaters. They just need a movie worth watching.

@Origame - theatres are DEFINITELY still recovering, and I don't even know if recovering is the right word as most people would say they are evolving and probably won't get back to where they once were.

2019 was a peak year for cinema with revenues of 11.24 billion. Despite the movies you just listed 2022 saw ticket sales at 7.46 billion.

It's not just covid either. Inflation isn't helping, there's been fewer movies, not just fewer blockbusters, fewer movies period. 2019 saw estimated around 140 theatrical releases. 2022 saw that number only go up to 109. It's not just quality, it's quantity. and if the strike continues for an extended period of time, they are going to get hit again.

Streaming also isn't helping, in fact it's probably contributing to fewer movies being theatrically released as listed above.

So while I understand your point that people still want to go to the movies, the idea that people are "acting" like theatres are still recovering just isn't that true. They are hurting. When cineworld has had to file for Chapter 11 closed a bunch of it's Regal theatres and AMC has seen it's stock prices drop by 85% through 2022, theatres are in a brand new world here.

@SATW42 - thats a problem with the studios. Not the theaters.

@Origame - AMC's stock droping 85% in value is a studio problem and not a theatre problem? Huh?

@SATW42 - considering theaters are dependent on the studios and the studios are producing crap...

Now if they could cut the budget in half for these movies, it'd be a decent profit! "Just cgi everything and pay these actors way to much for grade school level scripts"

If a movie is good, people will want to see it, especially a Marvel film. I watched Antman 3 last night and the writing was awful. No excuse for that.

Let's see if they can keep this momentum going. Secret Invasion and Loki will probably be at least good. The Marvels though... that I have my doubts.

Well deserved.

It’s a beloved franchise and it’s a good movie, so people showed up. Which is why I don’t agree with the superhero fatigue or marvel magic wearing off mindstate. As long as they can get back to a more consistent level of quality, they’ll be fine. Especially with huge releases like Deadpool/Wolverine and FF on the way.
