Guillermo Del Toro Offers Update On HULK TV Series

The Pacific Rim director gives an update on his planned television series based on Marvel Comics' The Hulk, saying that a new writer is currently being searched for. He also praises the recently released The Avengers

Speaking with MTV Splashpage at San Diego Comic-Con, director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, next year's Pacific Rim) is asked about the current status of his planned Hulk television series. "I have had a couple of minutes with Marvel since 'Avengers,' and they have the screenplay," del Toro said. "We're waiting for a particular writer to do a rewrite on the pilot. That's where we are right now. But we're still on."

Additionally, del Toro didn't hesitate to express his love for Marvel's recent blockbuster The Avengers. "I think 'Avengers' is beautiful because you give a movie like that -- that size, that scope -- to a guy that has the tone and the pulse of those things dead on, and that's beauty or curse, you know?" the director said.



Last we heard about the Hulk series , ABC was hoping to begin airing it sometime next year. Also, del Toro has said that his vision of The Hulk will be entirely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version (played by Edward Norton in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and by Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers). Still, with the recent success that Avengers' Hulk has found on the big screen, do you want to see the same version appear on ABC?

Do the smart thing ...a PUNISHER tv show with Thomas Jane is a no brainer. the budget is gonna be through the ROOF with a Hulk show.

I want another Hulk movie and a Punisher TV show works because its budget is actors, guns and "squibs".

Hulk tv show wont work,thats my view anyways,its gonna be like a soap opera with him hulking out now and then,I mean they are NOT gonna make him go Hulk every single episode I dont think,so whats the point,ok they made a tv show before but all they had to do was paint a man green and...fight a bear...in a lake..lol punisher tv show ftw

the old hulk tv series worked well enough with low budget affects and it was of it era so any who says a tv series wont work must be too young to remember wonder woman, hulk, and flash and need to understand how decent tv series are made

dont do it... just dont do it...

unless it's ruffalo and unless it ties into the movie and unless you can make hulk look exactly like he did in the movie everyone and their mother saw just scrap it. to do otherwise would be very damaging to the brand.

you have an opportunity to make shows that tie into the movie, an opportunity to introduce characters without spending $200 million over 2 years for 2 hours of entertainment. that opportunity is called HEROES FOR HIRE. not only is that a great name for a show but you could use all the street level heroes you don't have time for in the movie. then if Luke Cage and Iron Fist showed up in an avengers movie everyone would know "oh it's those guys from that hit TV show"

At the end of the day, they know what they're doing. They know what will work and won't work. A lot more than we do. It's their job. So, if they believe a Hulk TV show will work, then I'm inclined to believe them. They wouldn't even attempt this if they didn't think they could pull it off.

After two or three seasons of a Hulk tv show, they could release a related big screen flick with the same storyline/actors ala X-Files, Sex in the City, Star Trek. That's the best way to do this.

Nice!!! I was worried that the Hulk TV series was going to get cancelled because of how saturated of work is Del Toro right now, but it's nice to see he's moving on with the show!

@BizzaroNumber1, I never understood this reasoning. Why are people with special abilities expected to perform heroics and save people for free? I mean, it's a job. You wouldn't expect people with talents in real life to use those talents for free, would you? Does a doctor use his medical skills for free? Does a teacher teach for free? What about people who risk their lives like cops, government agents and military. Do they do it for free? Would you expect them to?

Being a superhero and protecting the public is a full-time job. Why should they do it for free? Are they expected to always be available, while trying to hold down a job to support themselves?

i would prefer a deadpool series over punisher. but general audiences would probably prefer punisher. i doubt this will be a soap opera with occasional hulk sightings. there will probably be many episodes with more hulk than banner. and it's a great way to introduce new marvel characters. i really doubt guillermo del toro is going to make smallville hulk

@BizzaroNumber1, but there's a big difference. The Hulk series would be handled by Marvel Studios and producers like del Toro and David Eick, who actually know what they're doing.

Wonder Woman was developed by David E. Kelley, someone who had never worked with this type of material, wasn't very familiar with the character and had almost no input from DC Entertainment.

I would love a Hulk TV show, but the budget required to NOT make this look like it came out of the 70's (like I did...) or a SyFy original, has got to be high as hell! I hope to see it, and wouldn't mind them starting out some other Marvel shows to maybe create a Marvel TV Universe all it's own.

agree with marvel72, punisher tv show,ray stevens, fx or hbo, mobsters meets sons of anarchy. i know a lot of people who would watch that. I don't see a hulk show lasting to long and it might bring down all the peak love he got from the avengers. When he cant be the smash and wise cracker hulk that we all loved in the movie,will people still have that love?

I remember some1 from marvel saying "This show doesn't really have to show the Hulk." WTF was that!!!? A show about the Hulk but won't show the hulk!!! Sounds like that Star Wars tv show that won't have Vader in it.. FAIL

Not to sure about this tbh, would have been better if it were in the MCU, as that way you can introduce alot of the other less known charecters before throwing them on the big screen.

@odin i agree.

it really is a great opportunity that seems like its going to be wasted. to be able to tie in your tv shows with your movies in the same universe... i mean star trek and star wars are the only ones that come to mind, and star wars only has animated tv at this point... this is chance to see the tv characters on the big screen with the movie characters

I am impatient waiting for this series, hopefully at some Comic-Con, preferably that of San Diego, show some progress in 2013 to warm up the engines and forgetting about Smallville. ...

Hulk is only works when he is on a team....stand alone there's not much you can do besides banner having nerd boners / hulk smashing shit, I love the hulk but he really needs his marvel buddies around to keep him interesting.

like 99% of people here , just make a REAL Punisher Show. that can and would work on SOOOO many levels. Frank Castle is a way better choice of character for televison. He is clearly more grounded to reality.....But that Does not mean to ignore the marvel universe What so ever. like it would be nice to see newspapers with spider-man headlines and newsfootage of other heros doing their thing. like it needs layers. it really needs to feel like the marvel universe. like blade shows up to kill off this new vampire gang or some shit while Frank is laying into one of them already.

One of the great tragedies in live action super hero history was when some Euro jackass was hired to run CBS-made drastic cuts to all shows and then would not pick up The Bixby Hulk for season 5.
They were going to do a finale were Banner was caught and tried in court. He and McGee were going to mend fences, Banner was going to be cleared of the Death of Elaina in the pilot somehow.
And finally Banner was going to be cured.
That wouldve been awesome and wouldve prevented the HORRIBLE Hulk Returns movies.

It wouldve been the 1st time live action brought closure to the story of a major superhero as TDKR is now doing with Batman.

I can't wait. I hope they go for a completely different tone for the Hulk tv show. I love the Ruffalo Hulk, and hope it gets a stand alone film, but a Hulk tv show would be great.

I'd watch a Punisher TV show, but only if they took the time to make it very well written. The problem with the Punisher is that he is such a [frick]ed up anti-social dude that it is hard to give a shit about him. I think that's why his popularity has dropped so much since the 80's.

anybody who says punisher would have to be on HBO to do it justice is fogetting how many people get killed on a nightly basis on network TV. it's laughable how much violence is ingrained into our society that Jack Bauer kills 10 people a night, tortures two, and we love it. NCIS opens with some gruesome death every week.. Punisher would work on network TV.

Hulk is too big for TV. Also the television shows should be a part of the MCU. They should have a Daredevil show and a Heroes for Hire show on ABC and a Runaways show on ABC Family.

I want Mark Ruffalo for the series, tie it all together, they would be morons if they didn't go this route, however, I can only see him hulking out only once due to budget constraints. I would definitely watch that and a Punisher HBO series, like that short. Tom Jane for the Punisher. Please get Mark for the Hulk! It opens up so many doors for future cameos from The Avengers. Don't be stupid Marvel!!

I believe that Del Toro could do well with the Hulk, but that show should only last one or two seasons max. But a Punisher series on HBO would REALLY be sick, Thomas Jane would have to return for that though.

I love the Hulk character... and I´m a big fan of Guillermo del Toro... but this TV series is SO wrong!

I don´t understand why Marvel Studios want to go with it... Just make a great movie with Hulk. Go with Leader and the return of Abomination... I think Marvel Studius have to finish what they start in Incredible Hulk and the excelent Avengers...
