Tyrese Gibson Says He's Still Up For A "Luke Cage" Movie

He also talks about his own comic creation "Mayhem" and says something very intriguing about another upcoming Marvel movie!
When MTV caught up with Tyrese Gibson during a recent “Transformers” press event, he shared some details about plans to create his own comic book series, “Mayhem,” as well as a potential "Luke Cage" movie and a part in "Captain America"!

“The energy from Comic-Con really did something to me,” Gibson told MTV News of what prompted him to try his hand at comics. “Instead of me sitting back and waiting on ‘Luke Cage’ to finally happen — which I’m still looking forward to doing once they get the script together — and instead of me waiting on ‘Captain America,’ which they were talking about me for, I’m going to create my own. And that’s what I did.”

“I’m not going to be one of those guys who’s a fake comic book guy. I don’t have a real legacy and history with comic books,” said Gibson. “I wanted to create my own and contribute to the legacy that already exists.”

“But I’m knocking at the door,” he added, “and I’m saying, ‘I got something special. Let me in.’”

Well, ill certainly be checking out "Mayhem". But i think the biggest news here is Gibson's Cap name drop. Is he talikng about an old rumor i never heard about? Or is he perhaps being considered for Falcon! Pretty unlikely if he is indeed going to play Luke Cage.

Anyway, let the speculation commence.

Tyrese would be a good Hero for Hire. Looking forward to that one...

seem cool ...i kind wanna see how he would luke
HOWLER16 - 6/23/2009, 4:43 PM
Sweet Christmas! What does he have to do with Cap?
ewoksoup - 6/23/2009, 4:46 PM
Who the [frick] is Luke Cage???

Not joking...
Minotauro - 6/23/2009, 4:50 PM
What if he plays the black Captain America that existed before Steve? Or maybe part of the movie is set in the current time instead of WWII and he has a cameo as Luke Cage. Marvel IS doing a great job of tying them all in now...
Bamf7 - 6/23/2009, 4:50 PM
He sounds cool and like he has good intentions but "Mayhem" looks like crap along with his wooden acting. Cool guy though. Found this because of this article.
Betty - 6/23/2009, 4:54 PM
I like his additude, but I've never given a shit about Luke Cage. More power to him all the same.
longbowhunter - 6/23/2009, 4:59 PM
Bamf7

"What if he plays the black Captain America that existed before Steve?"

What black C.A. before Steve? Am I alone in wondering WTF he's talking about? And even if their was, it wouldn't be Tyrese "LEFT CHEEK!" Gibson. I'm sure they could get a Will Smith, or someone with some range to him.
BillyBlack - 6/23/2009, 5:00 PM
I saw this lol! I knew you'd put it on here! Cool!

Well its very good news me thinks, maybe they want to test the waters with CAGE first or he's just playing another character in CAPTAIN AMERICA? Lets not hope for the latter! ; )
LEEE777 - 6/23/2009, 5:01 PM
if Marvel produces luke cage, then he may be appearing as luke cage in the first avenger: captain america movie as a street criminal.

then cap puts him in jail, and sometime later in the movie he gets out and approaches cap, only to surprise him and ask if he can join the avengers.

then cap says,"are you kidding?you just got outta the slammer"

but luke then proves him self in the avengers movie and they let him join as a reserve,at which time, the avengers are getting thier arse handed to them, and powerman shows up and lends a helping hand.

far fetched,indeed,but hell.
captain0vell - 6/23/2009, 5:03 PM
Here is cover for Mayhem. Judging from this it looks, Blah. What's up with those arms?
Betty - 6/23/2009, 5:06 PM
BillyBlack: Marvel ran a title a few years back called "Truth" about the REAL first Captain America: Isaah Bradley. He was among other black military recruets that were experimented upon during WWII, before they "perfected" the procedure that led to Steve Rogers' serum. It's a poignant story about racism, torture, bigotry, heroism, and patriotism.
You should check it out, it's pretty good. ;-)
adamant877 - 6/23/2009, 5:07 PM
I'm thinking the Falcon, but with Whorrywood, one never knows...
adamant877 - 6/23/2009, 5:08 PM
adamant--no wonder they were talkin' about will smith being attached to Cappy! I had no idea.

Betty - 6/23/2009, 5:10 PM
He will probably be used like he was in Transformers. The token black character that says things like "DAAAAAMN" oR "That guy is a ASSSSSSHOLE!" I think they may have been his only lines in that movie come to think of it!

Thats the only thing iv seen him in so i dont really know what caliber of an actor he is, but he does seem wooden like Betty says.

Luke Cage is Power Man Minotauro! Hero for hire. He wasnt much in the early days but has become a pretty good character since Civil War. If they do make a movie, Iron Fist HAS to be in it!
Rorschach01 - 6/23/2009, 5:13 PM
If he can act then he would be a good Cage, not sure about him as Falcon-I think Will Smith would be perfect for that part!
joshw24 - 6/23/2009, 5:15 PM
He should be CAGE in a cameo or small role!!! ; )

Ofcourse he ain't the FALCON JOSH @ ? MARVEL aint gonna use him twice???
LEEE777 - 6/23/2009, 5:16 PM
COOL
GUNSMITH - 6/23/2009, 5:22 PM
they could use him as either cage or falcon...fact is i dont think marvel would make him that big a character..they might just use him as a reference or a cameo...and how could you guys not know isiah bradley..his grandkid now uses that shield isiah carries as patriot of the young avengers!!!
Anil Rickly - 6/23/2009, 5:23 PM
im still not up for the modern avengers with luke cage..just use the pyms, cap, widow, stark, thor and vision, hawkeye too..the modern avengers can figure in at sequels or sumting...cage, iron fist, scarlett witch etc...they ccan come in later
Anil Rickly - 6/23/2009, 5:24 PM
Word Betty... I stand corrected.

Thanks adamant877

This is news to me. Sounds about right for the US government in the 1940s, I'm sure it's worth a read. I just get sick of the countless re-imaginations of classic characters. Next up is the Latino re-boot of Gotham's dark knight. LEEE's old buddy...

BillyBlack - 6/23/2009, 5:54 PM
LEE: i meant that if he was going to be either Cage OR Falcon then I wouldnt want him as Falcon!

Anil Rickley: talking of the Young Avengers, go check out my fan cast for a YA TV series!
joshw24 - 6/23/2009, 6:16 PM
I've always felt Marvel had very weak black characters. There are the exceptions; Storm, War Machine, and of course Black Panther. I never liked the Falcon or Black Goliath and Luke Cage comes off as more of someone working the door at a night club than a superhero.
longbowhunter - 6/23/2009, 6:18 PM
I really like Falcon and his recent appearences in Brubaker's run on Captin America have been great! Black Goliath was another great character and I was gutted when he was killed off in Civil War. You have to remember that there arent a lot of classic black characters because at the time that most of Marvel heroes were created (1960's) it probably wouldnt have been a popular decision to have a black Spider-Man etc!
joshw24 - 6/23/2009, 6:26 PM
Marvel Team Up Luke Cage and Iron Fist!!!
ScrewdUp - 6/23/2009, 6:35 PM
@josh24..the YA cast was awesome..id use mike angarano as hulkling and lacey chabert as hawkeye but u hit the nail spot on....also ya spidey cast was rock-solid..id prefer jim sturgess as parker, gerard butler as kraven...and not bruce campbell for mysterio...he would torch that role lol...id use rufus sewell as mysterio cuz he seems an eerie weird guy
Anil Rickly - 6/23/2009, 6:48 PM
Billy -

It's all good. I couldn't remember the name of the storyline....just that it was really good. It seems like a stretch to have it in the first movie though...who knows.

Bring on Bat-Manuel!
Bamf7 - 6/23/2009, 6:55 PM
Yup they should do a team-up movie with Luke Cage and Iron Fist. kill two birds with one stone.
ironknight27 - 6/23/2009, 6:56 PM
lol billyblack bat manuel. thats a good one...Hmmm...
droopy1317 - 6/23/2009, 7:04 PM
Remember, Luke Cage started out as a petty crook working for a crime lord.

Maybe in Cap, Luke will be a bad guy turned good over the course of the film.

And you guys mentioned a Powerman and Iron Fist movie huh? Hmm.. I'm thinking Hulk Hogan as Iron Fist and Mr. T as Cage. Just kidding.
VandalJ - 6/23/2009, 7:05 PM
terry crews(chris's dad form everybody hates chris)would be a good luke cage. they need to write extra testosterone into the part because sometimes he comes off as kind of faggy...
theeambassador - 6/23/2009, 7:19 PM
Anil Rickly--Why not Rufus Sewel as Dr. Strange? I think it could work. He's a great actor with a touch of menace and old enough to have some seasoning.

TheAmbassador--Terry Crews is the shizzy!
Betty - 6/23/2009, 7:36 PM
rufus would make a cool dr. strange but when i rem johnny depp i just see depp as strange more than him being the riddler...but definitely no bruce campbell for mysterio..cmon i like the guy but ive seen enuff of cbm butchery
Anil Rickly - 6/23/2009, 7:57 PM
they could do a hero hires movie...with the femme fatales that brewed conflict bet the big dogs..MISTY!!!..plus have shang chi and maybe make a reference to daredevil....you never know what cud happen
Anil Rickly - 6/23/2009, 8:01 PM
Billyblack- my bad i skip that post. its still freaking funny
mounted88 - 6/23/2009, 8:09 PM
Anil--Don't get me wrong, I love some Johnny Depp but let someone else have a job. He already is a bright shiny star. He could point at a lamp post and say, "I want to do a movie about a lamp post, pirate." and someone would develop it for him. Like Megan Fox, he can't have every role.

Betty - 6/23/2009, 8:28 PM
Joshw24 you plead a good case. I understand what you mean about black characters and the times (60's). I guess I just wanna see more heros like T'Challa/Black Panther. He is so hard ass, and he's a damn king.
longbowhunter - 6/23/2009, 8:31 PM
Everybody's forgetting that "The First Avenger: Captain America" is allegedly going to be a period piece set in WWII. And you know who was around during WWII? Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos. I'd say portraying a young Nick Fury could be what Tyrese is talking about.
alten2345 - 6/23/2009, 8:43 PM
Betty- why you re-posting my avator's a$$!!! lol
mounted88 - 6/23/2009, 8:57 PM

jallanr - 6/23/2009, 8:58 PM
Hell ya he would be pretty sick as luke cage I don't know what hell do in cap but he's a pretty good actor so it'll probably be good I want black panther though(t'challa) I mean wakanda the unbeatable country is so tight and he can whoop on cap in a fight so he's gotta be in one of these future movies or one of his own
SabretoothTiger - 6/23/2009, 9:18 PM
I HEARD AT ONE POINT JAIME FOX MIGHT HAVE BEEN LUKE CAGE..WHOEVER PLAYS CAGE SHOULD BE A MOUNTAIN OF MUSCLE.
GUNSMITH - 6/23/2009, 9:27 PM
Guys Tyrese can act.

He's been in more movies then just Transformers, and even had some lead roles.

Movies: Baby Boy, Four Brothers, Waist Deep. Just to name a few.

I think he will land Cage. Remeber John Singleton was attached to direct???? John was the guy to cast Tyrese in Baby Boy, his first movie. John also directed Four Brothers.

So if Marvel finally decides to make this, it could be huge!!
Unmasked - 6/23/2009, 9:35 PM
Michael Jai White for Cage. He deserves his own character and he'd be perfect. The "Truth" mini-series was really nice. No matter what people say about Marvel, they've always been ahead of the curve.
Cheesey1 - 6/23/2009, 9:38 PM
what about the rock for luke cage I think that he would be the best person for the part hands down and it could be a hit with him and the right script it could be amazing!!!!!!!!!
bodykount80 - 6/24/2009, 12:11 AM
The Rock????????????? sweet christmas no
teabag - 6/24/2009, 1:07 AM
sewell makes an even better villain..as for depp...he can act and look like strange..so no matter if he's a big star or not he should be top choice...as for depp as riddler...hmmm..i'd rather see guy pearce or jim caviezel in the riddler role
Anil Rickly - 6/24/2009, 6:03 AM
Cafritszel for Superman

Hmmmmm... "Tyrese Gibson Says He's Still Up For A "Luke Cage" Movie"... DUH!!! The guy's practically begging for it!!! What am i the only one that actually saw the monumental flamin turd of a so called film called "2Fast 2Furious"??? Gibson and Walker's performances were not "wooden" they were down right ROTTEN!!! I thought Devon Aoki deserved an oscar after seeing those two [frick]tarts in a full length feature!!! Not to mention the ever so [frick]ing ugly: Eva "puke my insides out" Mendez!!! Goddamn that movie was shit on a stick!!! I wouldn't even concider Gibson for Chicken George!!! Hell, i'm not for a wrestler either but The Rock has more acting talent in his left pinky than Gibson!!! And you honestly want Gibson to massacre Luke Cage??? I think Michael Jay White is the best choice as of yet but i'm not sure Marvel would give it to him. Anybody BUT Gibson is what i'm saying. Let him do his own damn comic hero on film so he won't actually get the chance to disgrace actually beloved characters!!!

LEEE777 - 6/24/2009, 8:14 AM
With all due respect, the Rock is definitely not an actor that should be considered for Luke Cage. If they don't pick Michael Jai White, then I guess that Tyrese is okay. As far as his acting, he actually gave a decent performance in "Baby Boy," which was a really underrated flick. I still think that Michael Jai White will be able to deliver that dangerous, gritty, bad a$$ vibe that Luke Cage should have.
Cheesey1 - 6/24/2009, 8:37 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel tried to introduce the New Avengers as minor characters in the early Avengers movies, to help build the brand.
njfuzzy - 6/24/2009, 9:58 AM
someone could post a pic of Jai White please?

well if Tyrese wants this role so bad, i don´t know why not. i mean, as LEE said: sometimes the worst that can happen to a role is that the actor/actress doesn´t give a sh#t about it, when all they care about is the cash$$$$$$
SirJediFrank - 6/24/2009, 10:28 AM
Maybe tyrese was a freakin singer for god sake I just dont see him as tuff and he can't act there has to be someone else has to be.As for Michael Jai White is a freakin midget.
How about the guy who plays heavy duty.
bodykount80 - 6/24/2009, 10:31 AM
Josh- It honestly wouldn't matter if you put up a pic of her flat out naked, she makes me puke!!!

LEEE- Yes let's just give it to Tyrese cause he "cares" about the character... while we're at it, let's give Green Lantern to Brian Austin Greene cause he "cares" for the character. See the difference between these guys and say... Hugh Jackman is that HUGH HAS TALENT!!!

bodykount80- Come across alot of 6'1 midgets do ya? How tall are you, [frick]ing 10'7 ???

@ shaman how is he gonna be cage hes already spawn lol jp but he would be a good choice but what about micheal clark duncan if they could make him look a little younger hes a mountain perfect for the role or maybe derek luke hes a good actor and would be a good role for him
SabretoothTiger - 6/24/2009, 12:07 PM
and youre crazy or dont like girls if you think eva mendez is ugly
SabretoothTiger - 6/24/2009, 12:12 PM
Michael Clark Duncan looks like he just ate Luke Cage so ...no. Zeus is a tad underacheived and his crooked eye would just attract our attention from the character he'd struggle to play. Derek looks like Cage's punk kid. Crews would be good but White is better.

SirJed- I'm done whackin' off to these. Been there done that :P

Tiger- Mendez is a Pukecicle!!! She's as ugly as Scarlet Joanson, Uma Thurman and Rose McGowan YUK!!!

hey theres no sayin that duncan couldnt get rid of that gut i mean look at when hes in welcome home roscoe jenkins not that big of a belly and youre probably right about derek luke but with some time he could do the role justice imo and i agree with you about uma thurman but rose mcgowan? are you nuts man whats the world comin too she is soooo fine
SabretoothTiger - 6/24/2009, 12:27 PM
jai white or derek luke for cage..these are the obvious choices....chris evans for danny rand...kerry washington for misty!!!!...micheal c hall for daredevil
Anil Rickly - 6/24/2009, 12:49 PM
Shaman

Uh dude... Michael White acting skills arent as good as Gibson's. Tyrese is doing blockbusters and White is doing Tyler Perry movies. That should show you something.
Plus Michael White is always doing a comicbookmovie role: Spawn and TDN. Bump it! He's just a tired actor man. Sorry...
I dont really care about what you say about Mendez... I think she's beautiful and Megan Fox is ugly... We share something here.
Where'd you get off with 2fast 2furious? Youve must of just seen that movie or something?

All I say is:
Tyrese for Luke Cage
Jet Li for Iron Fist
Will Smith or John Cena for Cap
Jason Statham for Daredevil
bigshow2312 - 6/24/2009, 12:56 PM
Michael Jay White was in TDK if you wanna argue semantics. White has acting range where as Gibson doesn't. None of Gibson's roles ever required much of him except playing a thug which he is in real life. I saw 2f2f a while back and didn't even care to see it a second time it was so awful. I agree that White isn't the best actor around but he's in a way better league than what Gibson can possibly imagine.

So yes, let's have a lackluster for Luke Cage, an asian IronFist, a black Captain America (or a [frick]ing wrestler with no talent whatso ever) and an emotionally chalenged actor for Matt Murdock. As for women, it's a matter of taste which can't be argued since talent has nothing to do with it so i'll let that slide.
Shaman - 6/24/2009, 1:28 PM
casting an actor because he loves the role doesn't mean jackpot. remember the shit people(myself included)gave heath ledger when he said he wasn't into comic books and he'd read some to find out more of who the character was. he was a good actor who delivered on an excellent written part. without a good script and good actors, no deals. derek luke is the best actor in the bunch he jus doesn't have the build. let's give it to the most talented and not the biggest fanboy, cuz they can be so attached to the role they don't see any flaws since they're so in love with the character, they may inadvertently [frick] it up. i'm looking at you ryan reynolds.
theeambassador - 6/24/2009, 1:32 PM

Rorschach01 - 6/24/2009, 2:37 PM
Good man Roar!!!

SirJed- Good point. But i won't post up a pic of him... he's that bad of a choice.
Shaman - 6/24/2009, 2:57 PM
He was damn good in TDK, in fact it would´ve been cool if his character had been more of a direct treat to Batman himself, and not on screen against the joker all the time. doyouknowwhatimean?

SirJediFrank - 6/24/2009, 3:12 PM
Michael Jai White also was in Kill Bill Volume 2 (or as I like to call it, Volume Poo) but his scene got cut. He was good in it, and there was some major ass kicking kung-fu going on in it. One of the only bright points of that borefest, no wonder it wound up on the cutting room floor. That movie was such a disappointment.

But yeah, Jai White is waaay better then Left Cheek.

bigshow2312

Your casting sucks. You obviously missed the John "simple jack" Cena conversation.

"Heroes for Hire"

Luke Cage - Tyrese Gibson (Unless a better suggestion can be made??)
Danny Rand - Ray Park
Mist Knight - Jada P Smith
Colleen Wing - Devon Aoki

if making cage movie iron fist must be in it or im gonna be p.o.
gambitfreak - 6/24/2009, 5:15 PM
I think that an unknown or relatively unknown would work too. Casting a comic film should put emphasis on the character and not the actor. As long as the actor captures the character (the general public has to be somewhat familiar with the character), there's a solid script, proper special effects and a nice supporting cast, I'll gladly bet that the flick will be successful. In light of that I keep going back to M.J. White as Luke Cage. I also like unknown actors 'cause you can get somebody young who can grow with the franchise.
Cheesey1 - 6/24/2009, 5:57 PM
IMO, Park and Gibson aren't options. I want actors for these roles or else why not cast wrestlers while we're at it. Christian for Ironfist and The Rock for Cage...
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 10:19 AM
Shaman: Park's name has been attached to the Iron Fist film for some time, as he appearantly is a fan of the character. I don't honestly know if a speaking role would be suitable for him either, but we'll say, for the sake of argument, that he would be a suitable stunt double.
Now you just have to cast a "face" for the character, and you got it.
I'm not a huge fan of Tyrese either, but since Hollywood doesn't seem to have a reserve of black male action stars, I don't really know who else would be suitable.
...It definitely needs to be someone who has street credibility, a formidable (intimidating) appearance, and the capability of growing facial hair. (lol)
Michael J White, though a decent actor in his own right, is not a large enough known name to carry a franchise film, so I wouldn't say that he would be a viable option. Who else might work?
adamant877 - 6/25/2009, 12:50 PM
Yes, Park would definitely be a great double. Unless he actually takes acting classes and blows our minds to smitherines. But that'd be reaching.

Good point about Cage, right now no already established actor is fit for Cage. I can only think of a few that have somewhat of a look but haven't really proven themselves worthy. Unlike Gibson who has already proven himself NOT worthy LOL :P

Michael Jay White
Lynn 'Red' Williams
Leonard Roberts
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Gregory McKinney

I think out of all of them, Adewale might be our best bet.
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 1:35 PM

I just come across this site. With all the superhero movies that have come about I have often thought about my favorite which is Power Man. For about three years or so now that I have thought hands down no one could play the part other than Michael Jai. Second runner up Terry Crew. Everyone else forget about it. The look, strength and agility of the old school comic Michael Jai all the way. He could probably pull off the new version as well. The new version of Power Man and pure brut strength probably Terry Crew.

Mr. Gibson and Mr. White seem to be cool cats and are a couple of great actors, but I don't think this role is home for them. Gotta have that grown ass man look. At 6'-3" 235 lbs I give more of a beastly presence than they do. But only I were an actor, Huh? ;-)

Just my humble opinion!

These were my picks without first reading the posts. You cats are funny group. @ Theeambassador, just shows Terry's range wouldn't you say? Ran into him a few times grabbing a bite to eat, he is anything but faggy. Small but intimidating role in Training Day.
