Neil Armstrong, a man who changed history when he first stepped onto the moon on the 20th July 1969 has died following complications from heart surgery eariler this month.

It is with great sadness that I must report the death of one of the most famous astronauts in history, Neil Armstrong. He walked on the Moon on 20 July 1969, and by doing so changed human history forever.

I think we all know the lines "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", even though we may not have been around at the time to hear such lines being said by the great astronaut. But it was those lines and the actions that occored on that day that threw us into an new age where humanity had no limits and where anything was possible. Hes a man who inspired people to dream and to become anything they wanted to be. I doubt that many of the things we have now would have been here had it not been for the moon landing of 1969.

It is truly a sad moment for the world. RIP Our man on the moon. Done what so many have dreamt of.

I think its pretty much default that the (if not one of the) 1st Moonbases and later-on permanant Moon Colony-cities are going to be named after him.

He's a legend. But I'm somewhat relieved that it wasn't Buzz Aldrin, I tensed up when I read the title. Buzz is like Stan Lee to me. Their "departure" would signal the end of an era, the era of skyward pioneers (among other things).

RunDTC, fake? Pretty sure they went to the moon a total of six times. Would be pretty ridiculous to invest so many billions of dollars just to "fake" a landing on the moon.

You know, he actually messed up that line. He meant to say: "One small step for A man..." but when he said it, for some reason he dropped the "A."

It makes more sense with the "A" intact - One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. He's just one man, a man, but he's representing the hopes and dreams for the future of all mankind.

But...

The fact is he dropped the A, unintentional as it was and it became one of the most famous and talked about quotes of all time. People speculated for years about he meant. The surface meaning was obvious, this was about the human race and its future, but that one dropped "A" made people wonder if "One Small Step For Man..." represented us and not him, and "One Giant Leap For Mankind" was Armstrong suggesting that this was our first step into a larger universe with "mankind" representing not just us, but every intelligence being in the universe, past present and future. Every race in the universe had to take that first step and here was Armstrong taking ours.

But if you're looking for proof that the moon landing wasn't faked, that one line should be enough. If it had been staged, they've have simply done it again due to Armstrong flubbing his line.

Armstrong himself was fairly reclusive in life following this monumental event. He and Collins (who remained in the module) tended to shy away from the limelight and Aldrin was the one who was out there as the face of that crew. All three men deserve our admiration and respect. We can't stay on this planet forever. Someday the human race is going to have to travel to the stars and Apollo 11 landing on the moon was the first step in that journey. A giant leap for mankind indeed.

The truth is, Armstrong isn't really dead. He's just gone on his final journey of discovery.

Whether you're an American or not, there's no doubt about that significant little footprint he made on the moon for all mankind. History will forever remember this legend and his accomplishment. A hero who despite the dangers strive for the stars and reached them. An inspiration to all. Godspeed Neil Armstrong on your final journey home.

"The moon landing was fake". If that's the case, I wonder how those reflective lenses that they use (in conjunction with lasers to calculate the moon's exact distance) got there? They've tested it several times, they "shoot" the laser to the moon, aim it at the relflective "thingies" (sorry to get technical) on the moon and then record the time it takes for the laser to reflect and return to Earth. It doesn't matter, however, some people will never believe. But I bet people still hesitate before calling Buzz Aldrin a "liar and coward" to his face (he's a refugee from the Smackabitch tribe).

Proof the first moon landing was fake? (taken from a website)

When the astronauts are putting up the American flag it waves. There is no wind on the Moon.

No stars are visible in the pictures taken by the Apollo astronauts from the surface of the Moon.

No blast crater is visible in the pictures taken of the lunar landing module.

The landing module weighs 17 tons and yet sits on top of the sand making no impression. Next to it astronauts’ footprints can be seen in the sand.

The footprints in the fine lunar dust, with no moisture or atmosphere or strong gravity, are unexpectedly well preserved, as if made in wet sand.

When the landing module takes off from the Moon’s surface there is no visible flame from the rocket.

If you speed up the film of the astronauts walking on the Moon’s surface they look like they were filmed on Earth and slowed down.

The astronauts could not have survived the trip because of exposure to radiation from the Van Allen radiation belt.

The rocks brought back from the Moon are identical to rocks collected by scientific expeditions to Antarctica.

All six Moon landings happened during the Nixon administration. No other national leader has claimed to have landed astronauts on the Moon, despite 40 years of rapid technological development.

Actually, the flag doesn't "waive", it stays in motion from the astronauts moving it (remember the law about physics and motion). Just about every argument claiming that the landing was fake (including those above me), has been addressed and disproven. If people can watch these lame conspiracy programs, you would think they would take the time to research the other side of the equation to confirm or contradict their arguments. It appears that the scientific method is not the only method suffering from these pointless debates.

@dreddhead123: it waves because was set in mtion by the astronauts and there is no "still" air stopping it.

There was too much light for the stars to be visible in photos, only in some later missions you can see stars beacause they had more sophisticated cameras with different settings while the cameras of the first missions were pretty barebones.

If you are referring to the lunar module "blast crater", there isn't for the simple reason that the landing was slowed gradually, a crater is created only at very high speed and energy, there was only quite a bit of dust (some went on the "feet" of the module as you can see in some photos).

That is simply not true, you can't see the prints beacause there the module above it.

The lunar regolite is different from earth sand in that it isn't smoothed, they are very irregular so they fit togheter like lego if pur under enough pressure.

Because there was not supposed to be, rockets (depending on the type of propulsion) in space look very differently from what you see in films.

That is simply not true, various times they tried to reverse engineer the supposed slo-mo trick (they even tried at Mythbusters) and the results were never quite as good, even using rigs and cables.
The only way to reproduce the effects is using the famous "vomit comet" which is a bit too small for a credible lunar landing set and can reproduce the low gravity effect only for very short times (a few minutes), and both the TV and the cinecamera were kept fixed for much longer times.

The radiations aren't that intense, it has been calculated that they received the equivalent of a couple of x-rays on each pass, they probably had less radiation than my father the time he broke an elbow and two ribs.

Because some of the rocks in antartica are lunar meteorites: the Moon has no atmosphere and lower gravity than Earth so when an asteroid hits it sometimes fragments of those impacts are able to escape the lunar gravity field and enter Earth's, they are mostly found in antarctica because meteorites there are easier to find.

Hey just because Nixon was a douchebag doesn't mean they are false, they didn't try to make other expeditions because of political and financial reasons, essentially once they made clear they had won the US government thought more sensible to spend money on tank and rifles to shoot at people than on exploring space.

Don't you think that russians would have exposed the hoax if it was that evident?
They were the first to send probes with cameras on the moon, i bet they could have spotted the difference, even though the landing was not transmitted in public the cosmonauts and various russian scientists saw it live and they didn't notice anything wrong.
Damn, their module prototype was even similar to the american one (though it was smaller and could only transport one person), they couldn't launch it because their N1 rocket tended to explode on launch.

Mythbusters did a great show where they debunked the "fake" moon landing conspiracy theories. I suggest those that believe all the reasons some say it was fake look up that episode.

He died the day after the 6 year anniversary of when the term "planet" was redefined which made Pluto no longer a planet.

The flag is extended and held out by a rod if you look closely. The wave illusion is a crumpled result from it being unfurled. It's all in the history books if anyone bothers to read anything else other than a comic book. I seriously really question the level of intelligence and logic of these conspirators. There is no hope or future for you.

@MGS: I think he referred to the fact that the flag moved a bit in the images, which was due to the momentum given by the astronauts while thrusting it in the ground.
I hope most people, even conspiracy theorists, get the fact that the flag was held out by a rod, right? Right!?

The hoax arguments were disproven years ago. Some people believe anything and some believe nothing. The rest of us can delight (or groan) in the statements that will come from their mouths.
